THE GIFT OF THE SPIRIT

Acts 10:44-48

“Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you came to believe?”

Acts 19:2 (CEB)

            Believing in Jesus.  How many people come to church and apparently are believers, exhibiting the right behaviors, participating in the activities, even to involving themselves actively in anything that comes up.  But after awhile, fissures begin to appear in this “faith”, looking at the defect of this or that brother or sister, complaining that things are one style or another, beginning to “feel cold”, and even separating themselves and disappearing. 

            Faith is a gift from God, and this is something that we should make very clear, and as a gift given to us, it never belongs to us.  We don’t “have” faith, but we embrace faith.  In this is the fundamental action of the Holy Spirit.  Our theology affirms that we receive the Spirit when we believe in Christ, surely, but it is something impalpable.  The brothers and sisters in Ephesus were asked if they had received the Spirit when they believed.  And without this divine spirit our faith is very weak.  It will wither in any heat, any blizzard, any drought.  The believer must cry:  receiving this grace of the Spirit makes us true believers.

Prayer:  Come, Holy Spirit and revive our lives, fill our churches with your fire and your gifts so that we will serve you effectively.  Amen.

EL DON DEL ESPÍRITU

Hechos 10:44-48

“¿… recibieron el Espíritu Santo cuando creyeron en el Señor Jesús?

Hechos 19:2

              Creer en Jesús. Cuánta gente se acerca a la iglesia y aparentemente son creyentes, ellos se manifiestan de un modo muy correcto, participan de las actividades, hasta desean involucrarse activamente en cuanta cosa aparezca. Pero al cabo de un tiempo, comienzan a aparecer fisuras en esa “fe”, a mirar el defecto de tal o cual hermano, a quejarse de que las cosas sean de un modo y no de otro, se van “enfriando”, y hasta se alejan y desaparecen.

              La fe es un don de Dios, y eso es algo que debemos tener bien claro, y como don otorgado, nunca nos pertenece del todo, no “tenemos” fe, sino que abrazamos la fe. En ello es fundamental la acción del Espíritu Santo. Nuestra teología nos afirma que se recibe el Espíritu cuando creemos en Cristo, cierto, pero es algo impalpable. A los hermanos de Éfeso se les preguntó si habían recibido el Espíritu cuando creyeron. Y es que sin ese espíritu divino nuestra fe es tan débil que pronto se marchitará con cualquier calor, cualquier ventisca, cualquier sequía. El creyente está necesitado de clamar: por recibir esa gracia del Espíritu que nos hace verdaderos creyentes.

Oración:  Ven Espíritu Santo y aviva nuestras vidas, colma nuestras iglesias con tu fuego y tus dones, para servirte eficazmente. Amén.
