Christ Our King Sunday

WHEN THE SON OF MAN COMES

Mathew 25: 31-40

Then the king will say. . .

Matthew 25:34a (NRSV)

Matthew is the evangelist who without hesitation mentions this category of King at the beginning of his gospel with the question posed by the wise men from the East: Where is he who has been born King of the Jews? But the evangelist is not so much concerned with the “King” Jesus as with the teacher Jesus. His gospel contains five big blocks where he groups the teachings of Jesus, with all intentionality.

When the Son of Man comes, says Jesus, he will gather the nations before him and separate then into two camps. The judgments he is about to make should not surprise us if we know of his teaching, which claims that loving God and neighbor are in essence the same commandment, and receiving a child in his name is like receiving himself.

There are times that strip us bare internally and call us to account for our disloyalties and failures. If we confess Jesus as King, let us be more willing to sacrifice and serve; to give ourselves as he did for good and justice. There is no point in worshiping a baby in a stable, which may even be romantic and tender, if we do not recognize that Jesus alone is to be the true and only Lord.

Prayer: Our God, let us recognize that Christ the King to whom we owe absolute obedience and worship, not only on one specific day of the Christian calendar, but throughout all of life. Amen.

Domingo de  Cristo Rey

CUANDO EL HIJO DEL HOMBRE VENGA

Mateo 25: 31-40

Y entonces el Rey dirá…

Mateo 25:34a
