EXCELLENT RULE

Matthew 12:1-8

“I have come not to abolish but to fulfill the law”.

                     Matthew 5:17 (NRSV)

“With morality we correct the mistakes of our instincts, and with love the mistakes of our morality."

                                                                                                                     José Ortega y Gasset

If we were to ask ourselves what the most excellent rule for measuring our behavior would be, it would certainly be love. When we read 1 Corinthians 13, we can reflect that it is of no use to do the best works without love. We would be like androids who coldly follow their programming.

Something like this happened to the Pharisees in Jesus' time. It was more important for them to coldly follow a series of precepts than to worry that many people would suffer the application of the law without its true meaning: “I want Mercy.” They did good deeds in the eyes of the people because they were concerned about seeing themselves as law enforcement and deserving of divine justice.  Jesus, who with his life fulfilled the law and the prophets, showed us his morality completely mediated by love for his Father and humanity.

Prayer: Our Lord, may your love and mercy fill our good work and not the desire to look good before others. Amen.

EXCELENTE REGLA

Mateo 12:1-8

… no he venido para abolir, sino para cumplir.

Mateo 5:17b
