THE FAMILY FROM BETHANY
JOHN 11:17-27.38-44
“Jesus loved Martha and her sister and
Lazarus.”
John 11:5
We encounter nuclear families in the Bible
who go beyond what is typical. This is the case with the family from Bethany,
made up of three siblings: Lazarus, Martha and Mary. Jesus loved this family and several pages of
the history of salvation were written about his relationship with these
siblings. Perhaps the most moving story of all was the miraculous act that Jesus
performed in bringing Lazarus back from the dead into his sisters’ loving arms,
thus freeing them from the suffering occasioned by the death of their only
brother.
Those of us who have lost a brother or
sister know that sense of void that nothing can fill, but we also know that the
peace of God is sufficient to overcome loss and move forward. The loss of one or both parents suffered by
many families is a good motive for reuniting the remaining family members. The absence of a father or a mother or both
is experienced as an inseparable “presence” –it transcends the physical life experience
and remains with us for the rest of our days.
Prayer: Lord, help us
to live joyfully with the memory of our parents and of other family members who
are no longer with us. Thank you
for the family you have given us. Amen.

su hermana y a Lázaro”

En la Biblia encontramos a
núcleos familiares que van más allá de lo típico. Este es el caso de la familia
de Betania, compuesta por tres hermanos: Lázaro, Marta y María. Jesús amó a
esta familia y varias páginas de la historia de la salvación se escribieron
alrededor de sus relaciones con esta familia. Quizás la más conmovedora fue la
acción milagrosa de Jesús para traer de nuevo a Lázaro al seno de aquella
familia, y librar a sus hermanas del sufrimiento que les ocasionaba la muerte
de su único hermano. Quienes hemos perdido a miembros de nuestra familia
sabemos que ese “vacío” nada lo puede ocupar, pero sabemos también que la paz
de Dios basta para superar la pérdida y para seguir adelante. La orfandad que
viven muchas familias puede ser un motivo para unir más al resto de los
miembros. La ausencia del padre o la madre, o de ambos, se vive como una
“presencia” inseparable, más allá de la experiencia física y nos acompaña por
el resto de nuestros días.
Oración: Señor, ayúdanos a vivir
con gozo el recuerdo de nuestros padres y de otros familiares que ya no están
con nosotros. Gracias por la familia que nos has dado. Amén.
