There is a time for everything,

and a season for every activity under heaven.

Ecclesiastes  3:1

About five years ago my eldest daughter dedicated her life to the Lord; and during all that time she attempted to share the Word with me, but I never gave her the opportunity. She opted not to speak to me further about God. Instead she spoke to God about me.

My daughter became pregnant, and in her fourth month my youngest daughter also gave me the news that I was going to be a grandmother. My first grandson having being born, the parents wanted to present him to the Lord in church, as is the custom in some evangelical churches, but as the pastor was traveling abroad, they proposed that his presentation wait until his return.

As God has control over everything that happens in our lives, the pastor returned when my youngest daughter had also given birth. So, they decided to present the two children together. Naturally I received an invitation. And at the beginning I refused, but the Lord had other plans for my life. I agreed to go, and that was the day that our all-powerful God had chosen for me to surrender my life publically.

Today I give infinite thanks to God for his love, his patience, and the possibility of walking in his ways.

Prayer:  Loving Father, thank you for your patience and faithfulness. Fulfill your purpose with those you have chosen. Thank you because you don’t hold our stubbornness against us, but know what’s true in our hearts. Amen.

todo tiene su tiempo, y todo lo que se quiere

Hacía 5 años que mi hija mayor había entregado su vida al Señor, y durante todo ese tiempo intentó llevarme la Palabra, pero nunca le di oportunidad. Ella optó por no hablarme más de Dios y en cambio hablarle a Dios de mí.

Mi hija queda embarazada y a los cuatro meses, mi hija menor también me da la noticia de que iba a ser abuela. Al nacer mi primer nieto quisieron presentarlo en la iglesia al Señor como es costumbre de algunas iglesias evangélicas, pero el Pastor se encontraba en el extranjero y pospusieron su presentación hasta su regreso.

Como Dios tiene el control de todo lo que sucede en nuestras vidas, el Pastor regresó cuando ya mi hija menor había dado a luz también. Entonces deciden presentar juntos a los dos niños.

Por supuesto que recibí la invitación y al principio me rehusé, pero el Señor tenía un plan con mi vida. Accedí a ir y fue el día que nuestro Dios todopoderoso tenía elegido para que le entregara mi vida públicamente.

Hoy agradezco infinitamente a Dios por su amor, su paciencia y la posibilidad de estar en sus caminos.

Oración: Padre amado, gracias por tu paciencia y fidelidad. Cumple tu propósito con aquellos que has elegido. Gracias porque tú no pones tus ojos en nuestra terquedad sino en nuestro corazón. Amén.

2 PETER 3:13

But in keeping with his promise

we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth

where righteousness dwells.

2 Peter 3:13

There once was a man who decided to change the world; “I will begin with my city,” he said to himself, “Oh no, it’s enormous! Better to begin in my neighborhood.” But then he realized that many people lived in his neighborhood, and it would be very hard to change them, and understood that it would be better to begin with his family, but then he also thought, “in my family there are so many problems, and so little communication.” And thus he withdrew, crestfallen, asking, “How will I do it? How does one change the world? Is it possible? Now I know!  I’ll begin with myself.” So, in the end, if we want to change the world, we should begin by changing ourselves.

When I read this text, I remembered a scene from the lives of the disciples in the Gospel of John. Jesus had been crucified, and the disciples felt their hopes had died as well. Their lives had lost meaning, so they gathered in a room, closed the door, and hid there, dying of fear. But Jesus, despite the closed door, enters and says, “Peace be with you.” Jesus wanted to offer them more than a greeting; he wanted to give them peace, his peace, and once having declared it, the breath of life, the Holy Spirit, blew among them.

Just as in Genesis, God blew the breath of life, and the “man became a living being,” Jesus gives his disciples the renewing strength of the Holy Spirit. The disciples’ lives returned to them with a new meaning. They would go out knowing that, as men and women disciples, they had a new mission to accomplish: to transmit hope, with the certainty that God can make all things new.  

Prayer:  Lord, when I feel lost, when the clouds are so thick that I cannot see the horizon, help me remember that you can make all things new. Amen.

“Existió un hombre que decidió cambiar el mundo: - Empezaré por mi ciudad- se dijo:- Oh no, ¡es muy grande! Empezaré mejor por mi barrio,- pero entonces se dio cuenta que en su barrio vivía mucha gente y que les sería muy difícil cambiarlos, comprendió que sería mejor empezar por su familia, pero también pensó: - En mi familia hay tantos problemas, es tan escasa la comunicación, - y así se retiró cabizbajo: ¿Cómo lo haría? ¿Cómo cambiar el mundo?, ¿es eso posible?- ¡Ya sé! Empezaré por mí. En fin: si queremos cambiar el mundo, debemos comenzar cambiándonos a nosotros mismos.”

Siempre que leo este texto recuerdo una escena de la vida de los discípulos que narra el Evangelio de Juan. Jesús había sido crucificado, y los discípulos sentían que morían también sus esperanzas. Sus vidas habían dejado de tener sentido, por lo que se metieron en una habitación, cerraron la puerta y se escondieron allí muertos de miedo. Pero a pesar de las puertas cerradas,  Jesús entra y les dice: “Paz a vosotros”. Jesús quería ofrecerles  algo más que un saludo. Quería darles la Paz, su Paz.  Por lo que dicho esto, sopló entre ellos el aliento de vida, el Espíritu Santo. Así como en Génesis, Dios sopló aliento de vida “y fue el ser humano un ser viviente”, Jesús le da a sus discípulos la fuerza renovadora del Espíritu Santo. Ellos regresaban a la vida con un nuevo sentido. Saldrían afuera, sabiendo que, como discípulos y discípulas, tenían una misión que cumplir: transmitir esperanza, con la certeza de que Dios puede hacer nuevas todas las cosas.

Oración: Señor,  cuando me sienta perdido, cuando las nubes sean tantas que no pueda ver el horizonte, hazme recordar que tú puedes hacer nuevas todas las cosas. Amén

CELEBRATING LOVE

1 CORINTHIANS 13

It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always preserves…

 1 Corinthians 13:7

In Cuba, we traditionally celebrate Valentine’s Day, on the 14th of February. The subject of love is key in our Christian faith. Our Lord Jesus Christ reiterates in his preaching and practices the Jewish law in a small word of four letters: Love. Once the Pharisees chanced to ask Jesus: “What is the greatest command of the law.” And his response was, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind. This is the first and greatest command.” (Matthew 22: 37-38)

It was of vital importance to the Lord that the center of our attention and love be placed in our   Creator, the vertical dimension of the cross. God takes the loving initiative to send us his only Son for the salvation of the world, (John 3:16) and invites us to respond with our hearts, souls, and minds through the cultivation of our devotional lives, through the reading of the Bible and daily prayer, through our participation in worship services, etc.

But in the passage referred to in Matthew, the Lord continues, saying, “the second command is similar: You will love your neighbor as yourself. The law and the prophets are founded upon these commands.” (verses 30 and 40), the horizontal dimension of the cross. It was clear for Jesus that we cannot love God if we don’t love our neighbor, especially “the least [important], the greatest in need.”

Prayer:  Lord, today we celebrate the Day of Love. Fill our hearts with this sentiment that makes the rest of the world turn around it. Amen.

Tradicionalmente en Cuba celebramos el “Día de los Enamorados” el 14 de febrero. El tema del amor es medular en nuestra fe cristiana. Nuestro Señor Jesucristo resume en sus prédicas y prácticas el legalismo judío en una pequeña palabra de cuatro letras: el AMOR. En una oportunidad los fariseos le preguntaron   a Jesús ¿Cuál es el gran mandamiento en la ley? y su  respuesta fue : Amarás al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, y con toda tu alma, y con toda tu mente. Este es el primero y grande mandamiento (Mt. 22: 37 y 38).

Para el Señor era de vital importancia que el centro de nuestra atención y de nuestro amor estuviera puesto en nuestro Creador, la dimensión vertical de la cruz. Dios toma la iniciativa amorosa al enviarnos al su único Hijo para la salvación del mundo (Juan 3:16) y nos invita a responder con nuestro corazón, alma y mente, a través del cultivo de nuestra vida devocional, por medio de la lectura de la Biblia y de la oración diarias, de la participación del culto de adoración, etc. Pero en el referido pasaje de Mateo, continúa el Señor diciendo: el segundo (mandamiento) es semejante: Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo. De estos dos mandamientos depende la ley y los profeta (v. 39 y 40), la dimensión horizontal de la cruz. Para Jesús está claro que no podemos amar a Dios, si no amamos a nuestro vecino, especialmente al “más pequeñito”, al más necesitado.

Oración: Señor, hoy que celebramos el Día del Amor, llena nuestros corazones de este sentimiento que hace que el resto del mundo se mueva en torno a él. Amén.

GENESIS  3:1-7

What good is it for one to gain the whole world,

yet forfeit their soul?

Mark 8:36  

In the beginning God decreed everything, and created what we call “the world,” the “environment,” the “ambiance” adequate for the life of the creatures who inhabited it. But in the creation of human beings, whom he placed in the garden of Eden, God made them responsible for their own acts, advising them: You shall not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. (verse 17).

Adam and Eve’s communication with God was comprehensive, on a plane of mutual collaboration and companionship, until temptation arose, as seen in the dialogue between the serpent and the woman, and later between her and her husband. Thus, the first transgression, instead of ending in repentance, ended with justifications. Adam blames the woman; she blames the serpent, in a cycle which today might be termed, “One blames everyone but oneself.”

     Justification isn’t repentance, it’s a deviation of blame. Adam practically blames God: “the woman that you gave to me…” The tragic evil of this story, the oldest one of all, was the break with the community of God/human beings/the natural environment. We separated from God and we abuse the environment, and by doing so destroy it; and we also destroy one other and continue rebelling against God, although we glorify our accomplishments. What good is it if man gains the world but he loses himself?

Prayer:  Lord, let us not be apart from you; rather, let us draw near to conform to your promise of your presence. Amen.

LA HISTORIA MÁS ANTIGUA

GENESIS  3:1-7

Porque ¿qué aprovechará al hombre si ganare

todo el mundo y perdiere su alma?

Marcos 8:36  

En el principio, Dios lo dispuso todo para crear lo que llamamos “mundo”, “entorno”, “medio ambiente”; adecuado para la vida de las criaturas que lo habitarían. Pero en la creación del ser humano, al cual pone en el Huerto del Edén, Dios lo hace responsable de sus propios actos al advertirle: del árbol de la ciencia del bien y del mal no comerán. (v. 17).

La comunicación de Adán y Eva con Dios  era integral, en  un plano de colaboración conjunta y compañerismo, hasta la aparición de la tentación, escenificada en el diálogo de la serpiente con la mujer, y posteriormente entre ésta y su marido. Así la primera trasgresión en vez de terminar con arrepentimiento, culminó en justificaciones; Adán culpa a la mujer, ésta culpa a la serpiente, en un ciclo del cual hoy se sentencia: “Las culpas nunca caen el suelo”.

La justificación no es arrepentimiento, es desviación de la culpa. Adán prácticamente hasta culpa a Dios: ..la mujer que me diste. El trágico mal de esta historia, la más antigua de todas, fue el rompimiento de la comunidad Dios-Ser humano-Entorno. Nos separamos de Dios y abusamos del entorno, destruyéndolo. Al hacerlo, nos destruimos a nosotros mismos y continuamos en rebeldía con Dios. Aunque nos gloriemos de nuestros logros ¿Qué aprovechará el hombre si ganare el mundo y se pierde a sí mismo?

Oración: Señor, permítenos no alejarnos más de ti, sino acercarnos para que conforme a tu promesa, tú te acerques a nosotros. Amén.

PROVERBS 30

Whose hands have gathered the wind?

Who has wrapped the waters in a cloak?

Who has established all the ends of the earth?

What is his name, and what is the name of his son? Surely you know!

Proverbs 30:4

In the chapters of the prophet Isaiah, where he denounces the idolatry of his people, God reminds him that his power cannot be compared with that of the nations that oppress his people. Can

the creator God, who formed and ordered the world, be confounded in his objectives? Taken as a whole, human beings are nothing before his power, weighing less than a speck of dust on the scales of a balance. Have we experienced that this all-powerful God is our God as well? Doesn’t it seem to you that we feel overwhelmed by problems that seem insoluble? If so, this is the moment to remember that our God is the most powerful of all.

Someone wrote: “All the problems known to man have a direct relationship to his conception of God. If your God is great, your problems are smaller. If He is small, your problems are likewise greater.” 

In thinking about God’s grandeur, we have the privilege of considering not only his visible creative power in all the universe, but also his display of love for us. He designed and brought about the work of our redemption through the gift of his son, Jesus, our savior.

Prayer:  Thank you, Father, for all your blessings. Thank you for your grandeur. Amen.

NUESTRO GRAN DIOS

PROVERBIOS 30

¿Quién encerró los vientos en sus puños? ¿Quién  ató las aguas en un paño? ¿Quién afirmó todos los términos de la tierra? ¿Cuál es el nombre, y el nombre de su hijo, si sabes?

Proverbios 30:4

En los capítulos del profeta Isaías donde se denuncia la idolatría de su pueblo, Dios recuerda que su poder no puede compararse con el de las naciones que oprimen al pueblo. El Dios creador que formó y organizó la tierra ¿podría encontrar  algún obstáculo para cumplir su voluntad? Los seres humanos en su conjunto  no son nada frente a su poder; no pesan más que un poco de polvo en el platillo de una balanza. ¿Hemos experimentando que ese Dios todopoderoso es igualmente nuestro Dios? ¿No les ocurre que nos sentimos aplastados  por problemas que nos parecen insolubles? Entonces es el momento de acordarnos de que nuestro Dios es más fuerte que todo.

Alguien escribió: “Todos los problemas que un ser humano  conozca tienen una relación  directa con su concepción de Dios. Si su Dios es grande, sus problemas son más pequeños. Si Él es pequeño, los que son grandes son sus problemas”

Al pensar en la grandeza de  Dios tenemos el privilegio de considerar no sólo su visible poder creador en todo el universo, sino también el despliegue de su amor para con nosotros. Él ideó y llevó a cabo la obra de nuestra Redención por medio del don de su Hijo Jesús, nuestro Salvador.

Oración: Gracias Padre, por todas tus bendiciones. Gracias por tu grandeza. Amén.

LAMBS AMONG THE WOLVES

MATTHEW 10:16-18

I am sending you out like sheep among wolves…

Matthew 10:16

In this text Jesus is speaking to those who purport to be disciples.  He feels as though they have learned enough through their experience to begin exercising genuine leadership. But to achieve this standing was not enough; the most important element was missing: to know how to manage this new responsibility. One of his most judicious counsels was: “Behold, I send you out like lambs among the wolves.” So, we have before us this interesting declaration that overturns all the expectations of those who believed that by following Jesus they’d be strolling down a path of roses without thorns.

What’s most impactful is that he introduces the figure of the wolf as the symbol of danger that surrounds all those chosen by God to complete his historical objectives.  Surely, in the early stages of the church, when many of his disciples assumed this task, they must have been aware of this warning. They were the witnesses to the presence of ferocious wolves when they confronted all of those who opposed Christ’s cause and who constantly attempted to derail his work. But of course, another way they could have sensed this reality was through the persecution exacted by the authorities, where many of them were victimized and martyred. God’s servants must be like a lamb; although in our world there are clearly wolves dressed up like sheep, and sometimes these are worse than the wolves themselves. But Jesus doesn’t want that; in truth, he wants his disciples to be like lambs: gentle, faithful, obedient, simple, humble to the will and disposition of the pastor par excellence, who is our God. 

Prayer:  Lord, we ask that you help us not to lose our gentleness, so that all the days of our lives we may remain the sheep of your flock. Amen.

CORDEROS EN MEDIO DE LOBOS

MATEO 10:16-18

He aquí yo os envío como a ovejas en medio de lobos…

 En este texto Jesús se dirige a los que pretendían ser sus discípulos. El Maestro siente que ya cuentan con la experiencia suficiente como para comenzar a ejercer un genuino liderazgo. Pero alcanzar esta categoría, no era lo suficiente. Faltaba lo más importante: saber como ejercer esta nueva responsabilidad. Uno de sus consejos más concretos fue: “He aquí yo los envío como corderos en medio de lobos” Y ante nosotros una interesante declaración que rompe con todas las expectativas de los que creyeron que seguir a Jesús era transitar por un sendero de rosas sin espinas. Lo que más nos impacta de sus palabras, es que se introduce la figura del lobo como ese símbolo del peligro que circunda a todo aquel o aquella que es escogido por Dios para cumplir sus propósitos en medio de la historia. Seguramente, cuando muchos de sus discípulos asumieron esta tarea en tiempos de la iglesia primitiva, vieron el cumplimiento de esta advertencia. Ellos fueron testigos de la presencia de los lobos feroces cuando enfrentaron a todos aquellos que se oponían a la causa de Cristo y que constantemente trataron de detener su trabajo. Pero también otra de las formas donde pudieron percibir esta realidad fue por medio de aquella persecución desatada por las autoridades, donde muchos de ellos fueron víctimas y mártires.  Todo siervo o sierva de Dios ha de ser como un cordero. Aunque ciertamente en nuestro mundo habitan los lobos con apariencia de cordero. Y a veces estos resultan peores que los propios lobos. Pero Jesús no quiere eso, quiere que en verdad sus discípulos sean como los corderos, bien apacibles, fieles, obedientes, sencillos, humildes a la voluntad y a la disposición del pastor por excelencia que es nuestro Dios.

Oración: Señor, te pedimos que nos ayudes a no perder nuestra   mansedumbre para que preservemos  todos los día de nuestra  vida el  carácter como oveja de tu rebaño. Amén.

PSALM 34

O fear the LORD, you his holy ones,

for those who fear him have no want.

Psalm 34:9

Scripture uses the term “holy” in relation to all believers who have decided to accept the call of God.  A person’s sanctification includes separation from all evil. The term is also used to indicate the progress of the believer in a spiritual life. Therefore, all Christians hope and try to be holy, to be available to the Lord so that he can use us to the full measure of his will.

In the Old Testament, God gives the following command which appears in Leviticus 11:44: For I am the LORD your God; sanctify yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy. Therefore, holiness is also obedience to God, and a lifestyle that agrees with that obedience implies serving God in every moment, even though there are times when we don’t understand or aren’t happy with the service that God demands of us. True wisdom is the fear of God and the discernment to interpret, hear, and fulfill that which God desires of us and not to put up resistance, but always to be ready to comply with his demand.

There is no better example than the witness of a sister in my congregation. After many sorrows and afflictions she obtained a dwelling in a place she really didn’t like, but guided by obedience to God and also by her need, she went there, settled in and overcame a number of obstacles. She always shows a readiness to serve God in that place since that’s where He put her. After a while she began to use her house as a house of prayer where local people came to hear the Word of God, some for the first time in their lives.

So, at all times, we will have his blessing.

Prayer: We pray, Father, to grow in holiness and obedience to you every minute. Amen.

SANTIDAD

SALMO  34

Temed a Yahvé, vosotros todos sus santos,

pues nada falta a los que le temen

Salmo 34:9

La Escritura usa el término “santo”  en relación a todos los creyentes que han decidido aceptar el llamado de Dios. La santificación de una persona incluye la separación de toda maldad. También se usa el término para significar el progreso del creyente en la vida espiritual. Por lo tanto,  todos  los cristianos esperamos y pretendemos ser santos, estar a disposición del Señor para que nos use a la medida de su santa voluntad. En el Antiguo Testamento, Dios da la siguiente orden que aparece en Levítico 11:44: Porque Yo Soy Yahvé vuestro Dios, vosotros por lo tanto os santificareis y seréis santos porque Yo Soy Santo. Así que la Santidad es también obediencia a Dios y un estilo de vida acorde con esa obediencia implica servir a Dios en todo momento aunque a veces no entendamos, o no estemos muy felices con el servicio que Dios demanda de nosotros. La verdadera sabiduría es el temor a Dios y el discernimiento de interpretar, entender y cumplir lo que Él quiere de nosotros y no poner resistencia, sino estar siempre dispuestos a acatar su mandato.

No hay mejor ejemplo que el testimonio de una hermana de mi congregación. Ella, después de muchos pesares y aflicciones, logró una vivienda en el lugar menos deseado por ella, pero guiada por la obediencia a Dios y también por su necesidad, fue al lugar, se instaló venciendo algunos obstáculos. Ella siempre mostró su disposición de servir a Dios en ese lugar, ya que Él allí la había colocado. Poco tiempo después comenzó a funcionar en su domicilio una casa de oración donde personas de la localidad asistían a escuchar la Palabra de Dios, algunos por primera vez en sus vidas. Así que, en todo momento, tendremos su bendición.

Oración: Oramos Padre, para ganar en santidad y obediencia a ti en todo momento. Amén.
