LOOK STRAIGHT AHEAD

 

PROVERBS 4:20-27

“Do not swerve to the right or to the left; keep your foot from evil.”

Proverbs 4:27

 

A good chauffeur driving his car cannot afford to be distracted by turning to look behind himself or to either side; he must look straight ahead, watching out for any unsuspected surprises of the road.

 

The rule of life is that we move forward, with a clear objective and straight ahead of us. A specific goal and a determination to reach it are important factors in the great impulse to improve ourselves that all human beings seek in life.

 

Life’s road is constantly changing.  Dangers and obstacles arise unexpectedly.  He who moves forward without paying attention, distracted by the circumstances, can be fatally surprised.

 

This is why we find great meaning in this book filled with so many prudent pieces of advice and wise words of warning. 

 

The Apostle Paul counsels:  “Fix your eyes on the things from above and not on the things of the earth…”  “For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” 

 

Prayer:  Lord, grant that material things not take first place in our lives, but rather that we may be examined by the Holy Spirit and filled with his faith in order to live wisely each day.  Amen.

“No te desvíes a la derecha o a la izquierda”

Proverbios 4:27

 

Un buen chofer manejando su automóvil no puede entretenerse en mirar hacia atrás o hacia los lados: debe mirar hacia el frente, en espera de las insospechadas sorpresas del camino.

La ley de la vida es que nos movamos hacia adelante, con un objetivo claro y preciso enfrente de nosotros. Un propósito específico y una determinación en alcanzarlo son factores importantes en el gran impulso de superación que todo ser humano precisa en la vida.

El camino de la vida está constantemente cambiando. Peligros y obstáculos se presentan inesperadamente. Quien ande con mirar descuidado, entretenido por las circunstancias, puede ser fatalmente sorprendido.

Por eso encontramos en este libro tan lleno de prudentes consejos sabias amonestaciones en este sentido.

El Apóstol Pablo aconseja: “Poned la mirada en  las cosas de arriba y no en las de la tierra” “porque las cosas que se ven son temporales, mas las que no se ven son eternas”

 

Oración: Señor, permite que las cosas materiales no ocupen un primer lugar en nuestras vidas, sino que seamos revestidos del Espíritu Santo y llenos de su fe para vivir sabiamente cada día. Amén.

THE CELEBRATION OF UNITY AROUND HIS TABLE

MATTHEW 26:17-29

“Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name—the name you gave me—so that they may be one as we are one.”

John 17: 11b

I remember when I was a little girl that my father never let me take my dinner plate to sit in front of the TV.  Dinnertime was sacred.  Everyone had to sit down at the table, and he loved to watch us eat. Today I am grateful to him, because that was a very special time that I recall with great nostalgia: the stories around the dinner table, the jokes, etc.

 

As we celebrate communion in our churches we remember what is known as the Last Supper of Jesus.  The teacher’s ministry was marked by banquets, a celebration of unity around a table, the signs of his kingdom of love and righteousness.  The sacrifice of Jesus on the cross commits us to continue building that kingdom that he inaugurated among us. God calls us to continue making room at our table in order to live the life of unity to which we were called.  God calls us to share our bread in a way that is fair for all men and women.  God calls us to share and celebrate in one and the same spirit as Jesus did with the men and women who sat around his table. Judas attempted to break up the communion on that occasion. But you and I know that the communion continues.  Let us maintain the unity among ourselves, and everyone with the Father. May the sharing of the bread and the wine become a daily and eternal reality in our lives.

 

Prayer:  Our God, do not allow anything to distract us in our relationship with you: neither television, nor consumerism, nor the desire for power, nor money… Grant that we maintain the same communion that Jesus desired for us!

LA FIESTA DE UNIDAD ALREDEDOR DE SU MESA

MATEO 26:17-29

“Padre santo, a los que me has dado, guárdalos en tu nombre, para que sean uno, así como nosotros”

Juan 17: 11b

Recuerdo que cuando era pequeña, mi padre nunca me dejaba tomar el plato de comida en la mano y sentarme frente al televisor. El horario de la comida era sagrado. Todo el mundo debía sentarse a la mesa, y a él le encantaba vernos comer. Hoy se lo agradezco, porque ese era un momento muy especial que recuerdo con gran nostalgia: las historias alrededor de la mesa, los chistes, etc.  Al celebrar la comunión en nuestras iglesias recordamos la llamada última cena de Jesús. El ministerio del maestro estuvo marcado por los banquetes, la fiesta de unidad alrededor de la mesa, las señales de su reino de amor y justicia. El sacrificio de Jesús en la cruz, nos compromete a seguir construyendo ese reino que él inauguró entre nosotros. Dios nos llama a continuar haciendo sitio en nuestra mesa para vivir la unidad a la que fuimos llamados. Dios nos llama a compartir el pan de manera justa para todos y todas. Dios nos llama a compartir y celebrar en un mismo espíritu como lo hacía Jesús con sus discípulos y discípulas alrededor de la mesa. Judas pretendió romper la comunión en aquella ocasión. Pero tú y yo sabemos que la comunión continúa. Mantengámonos unidos, y todos con el Padre. Que el compartir del pan y el vino sean una realidad cotidiana y eterna en nuestras vidas.

Oración: Dios nuestro, no permitas que nada nos distraiga en nuestra relación contigo: ni el televisor, ni el consumismo, ni el ansia de poder, ni el dinero… ¡Qué mantengamos la misma comunión que Jesús deseó para nosotros!

LET US CLOSE UP THE WOUNDS

 

MATTHEW 18:15-22

“Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven.”

Matthew 18:19

 

There is a general belief that it is very difficult, if not almost impossible, to forget an offense.  The saying:  “I forgive, but I do not forget” expresses this quite well. Some people carry bitterness and resentments to the point where the victims turn into perpetrators. It is true that forgiveness is a process requiring acknowledgement of the error and the commitment to not repeat it, but once we have decided to forgive an offense, we should be honorable and give the other person the opportunity to begin anew.  If we leave behind open wounds, we would be denying ourselves the possibility to rebuild a friendship, to salvage a love relationship, to begin a new stage in a relationship.

 

God is calling us to reconcile ourselves without skipping stages, but with the willingness to look ahead, to forgive and to begin anew.  This is the only way that we will feel the peace that flows from the heart, the peace of reconciliation.

 

Prayer:   Merciful God, help us to acknowledge our responsibility in conflicts, instead of always blaming others.  Grant that we may be capable of forgiving and reconciling ourselves until our wounds and those of others have healed.  Give us the peace of reconciliation and forgiveness. In the name of Jesus, who invited us to always and forever forgive. Amen.

 

 

CERREMOS LAS HERIDAS

 

MATEO 18: 15-22

“Otra vez os digo que si dos de vosotros se ponen de acuerdo

en la tierra acerca de cualquier cosa que pidan,

les será hecho por mi Padre que está en los cielos”

Mateo 18:19

 

Existe una creencia generalizada de que resulta muy difícil, casi imposible piensan algunos, olvidar una ofensa. El refrán: “Perdono, pero no olvido” muy bien lo expresa. Algunas personas cargan rencores y resentimientos a tal punto que de víctimas se convierten en victimarios. Es cierto que el perdón es un proceso que requiere del reconocimiento del error y el compromiso a no repetirlo, pero una vez que hemos decidido perdonar una ofensa, debemos ser cabales y brindarle al otro o a la otra la posibilidad de comenzar una nueva historia. Si dejamos abiertas las heridas, estaríamos negándonos la posibilidad de reconstruir una amistad, salvar un amor, comenzar una nueva etapa en una relación.

Dios nos está haciendo un llamado a reconciliarnos sin saltar etapas, pero con la disposición de mirar hacia adelante, perdonar y comenzar de nuevo. Sólo así sentiremos la paz que brota del corazón, la paz de la reconciliación.

 

Oración: Dios misericordioso, ayúdanos a reconocer nuestra responsabilidad en los conflictos, en vez de estar culpando siempre a los demás. Permite que seamos capaces de perdonar y reconciliarnos hasta que nuestras heridas y la de los demás hayan sanado. Danos la paz de la reconciliación y el perdón. En el nombre de Jesús, que nos invitó a perdonar infinitamente. Amén

SIGNS FROM GOD IN COLOR

 

GENESIS 8:1-22

“I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.”

Genesis 9:13

 

Rainbows have always captured my attention.  These columns of colors that announce from the sky that the rain has passed by! The rainbow furthermore tells us that any new beginning should be accompanied by lots of color and hope.  Life is not in black and white.

 

When we feel that our lives are like a flood, let us also have the faith needed to look outside the ark, outside of our inhibitions and security. This is the only way that we will be able to see the signs of God in color, announcing that the rain has stopped, and that it is the opportunity to begin anew.  These signs of hope also commit us to a life which is thankful to God and to act with goodness and righteousness.  Only in this way will God give us the ability to overcome the floods and to renew his covenant with us.

                                                                  

 

Prayer:  God of hope, forgive us for the floods that we provoke by our errors; transform us, and give us the ability to see your signs of new life in Christ. Amen.

 

 

SEÑALES DE DIOS EN COLORES

 

GÉNESIS 8:1-22

“Mi arco he puesto en las nubes, el cual será

por señal de mi pacto en la tierra”

Génesis 9:13

 

Siempre me han llamado la atención los arcoiris. ¡Esas listas de colores que te anuncian desde el cielo que la lluvia ha pasado! El arcoiris nos anuncia además que cualquier nuevo comienzo debe estar acompañado de mucho color y esperanza. La vida no es en blanco y negro.

Cuando sintamos que nuestra vida es como un diluvio, tengamos también la fe necesaria para mirar afuera del arca, de nuestros encierros y protecciones. Solo así podremos ver las señales de Dios en colores, anunciando que la lluvia ha cesado, y que es la oportunidad para comenzar de nuevo.

Estas señales de esperanza también nos comprometen a vivir una vida agradecida a Dios y a obrar con bondad y justicia. Sólo así Dios nos dará la capacidad de sobrepasar los diluvios y renovará su pacto con nosotros.

 

Oración: Dios de esperanza, perdónanos por los diluvios que provocamos con nuestros errores, transfórmanos, y danos la capacidad de ver tus señales de vida nueva en Cristo. Amén

LET US ACCEPT ANOTHER’S HOSPITALITY

 

GENESIS 19: 1-3

“But they urged him strongly, ‘Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.’”

Luke 24: 29

A few weeks ago I invited a friend to have coffee with me. I had noticed that she was exhausted and I wanted to offer her the opportunity to relax and converse.  But there was no way to achieve my purpose; my friend insisted on making the coffee, washing the cups, and leaving the kitchen cleaned up.  When I finally got her to sit down, with a smile on my lips I made her see that she was not giving me the possibility to offer her any hospitality, to receive her in my home and to afford her a pleasurable time.

There are times when we understand and practice good hospitality, but we forget to be good guests, with others as well as with God.  We want to do it all and we lose the opportunity to be good guests to those who wish to show us their love and respect.

 

Jesus gave the men on the road to Emmaus the opportunity to recognize him in this marvelous act of sitting down to eat at his hosts’ table and sharing bread.  He acted as if he were leaving but as a good guest, he entered and sat down to eat with his disciples. Jesus is not just the one who receives others; He is also the one who allows others to receive him.

 

Prayer:  We wish to receive you in our home, at our table, in our lives, oh Jesus of the way.  Grant also that we may accept the hospitality of others through your love, which heals all, frees all, and transforms all.  Amen.

 

 

DEJÉMONOS HOSPEDAR

 

GÉNESIS 19: 1-3

“Pero ellos lo obligaron a quedarse, diciendo:

- Quédate con nosotros, porque se hace tarde

y el día ya ha declinado”

Lucas 24: 29

Hace algunas semanas invité a una amiga a tomar una taza de café conmigo. Yo notaba que ella estaba agobiada  y quise brindarle un espacio para relajarse y conversar. Pero no hubo manera de cumplir mi propósito, mi amiga quería hacer el café, fregar las tazas, dejar la cocina recogida. Cuando logré sentarla, con una sonrisa en los labios le hice ver que no me estaba dando la posibilidad de acogerla, recibirla en mi casa y hacerle pasar un agradable momento.

A veces entendemos y aplicamos aquello de ser buenos anfitriones, pero nos olvidamos de ser buenos huéspedes, con nuestro prójimo e incluso con Dios. Queremos hacerlo todo, y nos perdemos la oportunidad de que quien nos acoge nos muestre su amor y respeto.

Jesús le dio la posibilidad a los caminantes de Emaús de reconocerle en ese maravillo acto de sentarse a la mesa de sus anfitriones y compartir el pan. Él hizo como que seguía pero como buen huésped entró y cenó con sus discípulos.

Jesús no es sólo aquel que recibe sino aquél que se deja hospedar.

 

Oración: Queremos recibirte oh Jesús del camino en nuestra casa, en nuestra mesa, en nuestras vidas. Permite también que nos dejemos hospedar por tu amor, que todo lo sana, todo lo libera, todo lo transforma. Amén

BRIEF TESTIMONY

 

 

When we are experiencing difficult moments, there is no doubt whatsoever that “our help comes from the Lord, who made the heavens and the earth”.

 

Many times in my life, I have been in difficult situations that have debilitated my spirit and weakened my faith. But when I have seen the Su Voz devotional booklet on my night table, I’ve asked myself:  What might God have prepared for me on this day?  And upon taking it in my hands and searching within it, it has brought me the comforting message that God had prepared for me for this day.

 

Always take this Su Voz Devotional with you. You will thus be able to receive the message of needed encouragement and hope; and may this very God Almighty continue to inspire others to collaborate with our booklet, and may He accompany those who regularly write the devotions so that Su Voz is always present at each bedside table alongside the Word of God, the Bible.

 

BREVE TESTIMONIO

 

 

Cuando estamos en momentos difíciles, no cabe la menor duda de que “nuestro socorro viene de Jehová, que hizo los cielos y la tierra”

Muchas veces en mi vida he estado en situaciones  difíciles que han debilitado mi espíritu y han hecho flaquear  mi fe. Pero cuando he visto sobre mi mesa de noche la revista Devocional Su Voz, me he preguntado: ¿Qué tendrá Dios para mí en este día dentro de ella? Y al tomarla en mis manos y  buscar en ella, me ha traído el mensaje confortador que Dios tenía preparado para mí en este día.

Lleve siempre esta revista Su Voz consigo. Así podrá brindar el mensaje de aliento y esperanza necesaria; y que este mismo Dios Todopoderoso siga inspirando a otros para que colaboren con nuestra revista, y que  acompañe a quienes lo hacen con regularidad para que Su Voz esté siempre presente en cada mesa de noche junto a la Palabra de Dios, la Biblia.

Sixty-eighth Anniversary of the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Matanzas

Day of the Elderly in Cuba

 

OLD AGE, DIVINE TREASURE

JOB 12: 11-17

 “…gray hair the splendor of the old.”

Proverbs 20:29

 

Reaching the age of 68 places our Evangelical Theological Seminary within the so-called “third age” or “elderly adult.”  In a person’s life as in the history of an educational institution, such an age should represent the healthy pride of years lived with intensity, marked by struggles and disappointments but also with successes, joys and hopes.  The ecumenical ideal and practice of the SET should be an inspiration for our Christian lives, a life marked by the willingness to share, to serve, to grow together as men and women beyond prejudices and exclusion.

 

The years of accumulated experience should be to the benefit of spiritual strength (and, in the case of the Seminary, academic strength) and should represent inspiration and light for the next generations.  The dignity implied by so many years lived is an opportunity to continue exploring the dreams and knowledge that God reserves for us in each stage of our lives.  There are no limits in time for vividly living new experiences. We should give thanks to God for our elderly men and women, and for their profound knowledge, courage and experience; and for the Seminary, the school of many generations that remains open to new experiences, led by the hand of God.

 

Prayer:  God of life, grant that we may live to old age according to your will and in the shade of the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth.  Grant that our Seminary may always be open to growth as a seed, while also bearing fruit in order to strengthen your Mission in your Church. Amen.

Día de la ancianidad en Cuba

 

ANCIANIDAD, DIVINO TESORO

JOB 12: 11-17

“La belleza de los ancianos, su vejez”

Proverbios 20:29

Arribar a los 68 años ubica a nuestro Seminario Evangélico de Teología dentro de la llamada “tercera edad” o “adulto mayor”. Tanto en la vida de una persona como en la historia de una institución formativa tal edad debe representar el sano orgullo de años vividos con intensidad, marcados por tropiezos y decepciones pero también con aciertos, alegrías y esperanzas. El ideal y práctica ecuménicas del SET debe ser inspiración para nuestra vida cristiana, una vida marcada por la disposición a compartir, a servir, a crecer juntos y juntas más allá de prejuicios y exclusiones.

Los años de experiencia acumulada deben redundar en fortaleza espiritual (y académica, en el caso del SET), y representar inspiración y luz para las nuevas generaciones.  La dignidad que implica tantos años vividos, es una oportunidad para continuar explorando los sueños y saberes que Dios nos reserva para cada etapa de nuestras vidas. No existen límites en el tiempo para vivir animadamente nuevas experiencias. Debemos dar gracias a Dios por nuestros ancianos y ancianas, cargados de profundos saberes, ánimos y experiencias; y por el SET, escuela de tantas generaciones que continúa abierta a nuevas experiencias, asida de la mano de Dios.

 

Oración: Dios de la vida, permítenos vivir una ancianidad bajo tu voluntad y a la sombra de las enseñanza de Jesús de Nazaret. Permite que nuestro Seminario siempre esté abierto a crecer como semilla, y a la vez dar frutos para fortalecer en tu Misión a tu Iglesia. Amén.
