MAY WE ALL BE PROPHETS!

Numbers 11:25-29

“The precepts of the Lord are right,

rejoicing the heart”

Psalm 19:8a

Moses must assemble seventy elderly men upon whom the spirit of God will descend, and therefore they will be able to assist him in his mission. The shared burden will be easier.

Into this context the other story of Eldad and Medad is inserted, as they too are beginning to prophesize. There are people who live outside the encampment, outside the church, upon whom this divine wind blows, which we, who are within, are attempting to control; a totally useless exercise since it escapes through our fingers. He who is not against me is with me, Jesus said one day to his disciples. One should be happy for another’s gifts, not envious as Joshua was.

Moses could accomplish his mission because he knew how to recognize and appreciate the gift that God gave to others. He didn’t see them as a threat, rather as help in bringing the people closer to God. That was his desire: the glory of God, not his own. He loved God so much that he was gladdened to know that others had the spirit as well. He said, “Would that all the Lord’s people were prophets, that the Lord would put his spirit upon them!”

When they are authentic, ministries and gifts aren’t in competition. They should operate like body members, all in harmony for the greater good.

Prayer:  Lord, spill out your Spirit so that everyone can prophesize and announce the expansion of your kingdom. Amen

Salmo 19:8a

Moisés deberá reunir 70 ancianos sobre los que irrumpirá el espíritu de Dios y así podrán ayudarle en su misión. La carga al ser compartida será más ligera.

En este contexto se inserta el otro relato de Eldad y Medad que también empiezan a profetizar. Hay gente que mora fuera del campamento, fuera de la Iglesia, sobre quienes sopla ese viento divino que intentamos retener los que estamos dentro; tarea totalmente inútil ya que se nos escapa de las manos. El que no está contra mí, está conmigo, dijo un día Jesús a sus discípulos. Hay que alegrarse con los dones de los otros y no sentir envidia, como sintió Josué.

Moisés pudo cumplir bien su misión porque supo reconocer y apreciar el don que Dios le daba a otros. No los veía como una amenaza sino como una ayuda para lograr que el pueblo se acercara a Dios. Ese era su deseo: la gloria de Dios y no la suya propia. Amaba tanto a Dios que se alegraba de saber que otros también tenían el Espíritu. Dijo: "¡Ojalá todos fueran profetas en el pueblo del Señor, porque él les infunde su Espíritu!

Los ministerios y los dones, cuando son auténticos, no están en competencia. Deben operar como los miembros de un cuerpo, todos armonizados para el bien común.

Oración: Señor, derrama tu Espíritu para que todos podamos profetizar y pregonar la expansión de tu Reino. Amén.

MY HIGH REFUGE

Psalm 143

“My Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer,

my God, my rock in whom I take refuge.”

Psalm 18:2

This psalm was written at the time when David found himself pursued, fleeing from cave to cave, rock to rock, and he expresses his trust in God as his sole refuge. During those moments he couldn’t count on practically any human help, because even his faithful friends like Jonathan couldn’t do much for him, not being able to facilitate his escape. The situation was extremely difficult and dangerous.

This psalm expresses the trust the psalmist had, the memory of the help received in the past; since one of the things that helps us live is the experience received from God during the journey that we’re already engaged in, and knowing through it that he doesn’t abandon us at the most critical hour: “When I evoke bygone days…and I think about all that you have done, I raise my hands towards you.”

David doesn’t pretend that his desperate situation lacks importance, but he isn’t totally absorbed by it; he knows that the same God – and through his “good name” - would not allow the injustice he was suffering to be committed.  

Prayer:  Lord, I trust in you, make me know the way where I am going. Amen

MI ALTO REFUGIO

Salmo 143

“Mi Señor y Dios… tú eres mi fuerza y mi escudo,

mi poderosa salvación, mi alto refugio”

Salmo 18:2

Este salmo fue escrito en tiempos en que David se encontraba perseguido, huyendo de cueva en cueva y de roca en roca, y expresa su confianza en Dios como único refugio para él. En aquellos momentos no podía contar prácticamente con ninguna ayuda humana, porque aun sus fieles amigos, como Jonatán, poco podían hacer por él, de no ser, facilitarle la huida. De manera que la situación era extremadamente difícil y peligrosa.

Este salmo expresa la confianza que el salmista tenía: el recuerdo de la ayuda recibida en el pasado, pues una de las cosas que nos ayudan a vivir es la experiencia recibida de Dios durante el camino que ya llevamos andando, y saber, por ella, que él no nos abandona en los momentos más críticos: “cuando evoco los días de antaño… y pienso en todo lo que has hecho, elevo mis manos hacia ti”.

David no pretende que su desesperante situación carezca de importancia, pero no está totalmente absorbido por ella. Sabe que el mismo Dios y por su "buen nombre" no permitiría que se cometiera la injusticia que estaba sufriendo.

Oración: Señor, en ti confío, hazme saber el camino por donde ande. Amén.

SALVATION NOW

Luke 13:22-30

“For salvation is closer to us now

than when we became believers.”

Romans 13:11b

In today’s biblical passage we find ourselves with the question: “Lord, are those who are saved so few?” And now we can ask ourselves, “What do we understand by salvation?” 

Salvation is our incorporation in Christ; this is what John is referring to when he says, “Abide in me, and I in you.” (John 15:4)

When we think and talk about salvation, we always think about future salvation. But before considering if there is life after death, we should consider if there is a life before death, and that it’s necessary to live it abundantly. Salvation begins here and now, until eternity.

Salvation is communal. We are saved in the community of the church, which in turn receives salvation in the greater community, which is the World. The church is saved and redeemed working in God’s world.

Prayer:  Lord, make us understand that our salvation begins here and now. Through Jesus Christ, our Redeemer. Amen.

SALVACIÓN AHORA

Lucas 13:22-30

“Nuestra salvación está más cerca de nosotros

En el pasaje leído nos encontramos con esta pregunta: “Señor, ¿son pocos los que se salvan?” Y ahora nosotros podemos preguntarnos: ¿qué entendemos nosotros por salvación?

La salvación es nuestra incorporación en Cristo, es a lo que se refiere Juan cuando dice: “Permanezcan en mí, y yo en ustedes” (15:4).

Cuando pensamos y hablamos de salvación, siempre pensamos en la salvación futura. Pero antes de pensar si hay una vida después de la muerte, debemos pensar que hay una vida antes de la muerte y que hay que vivirla a plenitud. La salvación comienza aquí y ahora y hasta la eternidad.

La salvación es comunitaria. Somos salvados en la comunidad de la Iglesia, y esta, a su vez, recibe la salvación en una comunidad mayor que es el Mundo. La Iglesia es salvada, redimida, obrando en el mundo de Dios.

Oración: Señor, haznos comprender que nuestra salvación comienza aquí y ahora. Por Jesucristo nuestro Redentor. Amén.

SHEATHED WITH ARMOR

Ephesians 6:10-20

“Put on the armor of God”

Ephesians 6:11ª

According to what we know, armor formed a part of the soldier’s means of security in antiquity. In the Old Testament we are told how the young David clad himself in armor in order to go into battle with Goliath; but as David wasn’t trained in the use of battle attire, he opted to take it off.

Modern armies no longer use this type of equipment, although they have helmets and bullet proof vests to protect themselves. I’m not aware if they have other means of protection. But what this passage surely tells us is that just as the soldier prepares himself for combat, we need to equally prepare ourselves for mission.

Like the soldier, the believer in Jesus Christ needs to prepare himself to carry out the mission he has been assigned; and that, in passing, is nothing easy. If we are responsible (conscious that we will have to respond) we should know that we have to seek out the tools suitable for the task: to know our weaknesses and look for the way to strengthen ourselves.

Prayer:  Father, let me be ready to complete the task you have set before me today. Amen.

REVESTIDOS DE ARMADURA

Efesios 6:10-20

“Revístanse de toda la armadura de Dios”

Por lo que conocemos, la armadura formaba parte de los medios de seguridad de los soldados en la antigüedad. En el Antiguo Testamento se nos habla de que al joven David le pusieron una armadura para que saliera a combatir a Goliat; pero como David no estaba entrenado en el uso de la indumentaria guerrera, optó por quitársela.

Los ejércitos modernos ya no usan este tipo de indumentaria, aunque tienen cascos y chalecos antibalas para protegerse. Desconozco si tienen otros medios de protección. Pero el hecho cierto que nos relata este pasaje es que como el soldado se preparaba para el combate, así tenemos que prepararnos para la misión

Como el soldado, el creyente en Jesucristo tiene que prepararse para cumplir con la misión que le ha sido asignada; y que de paso, no es nada fácil. Si somos responsables (conscientes de que tendremos que responder) debemos saber que tenemos que buscar las herramientas idóneas para la tarea. Conocer nuestras debilidades y buscar la forma de fortalecernos.

Oración꞉ Padre, permíteme estar hoy listo para cumplir con la tarea que has dispuesto para mí. Amén.

Romans 16:3-5a

“Greet also the Church in their house”

Romans 16:5ª

Those of us who have spent some years in the church have seen how, in recent years, the so called “worship houses” have proliferated in our cities. In the majority of cases they respond to the fact of new denominations lacking a previous sanctuary. In other cases it has been a temporary solution to not being able to rely on a sanctuary in a given place. Owners have agreed to loan the houses for the use of a church where a group of members may meet.

Perhaps when the Apostle Paul referred to Priscilla and Aquila’s home he did it in the sense of a place where the brothers and sisters could meet to praise the Lord. Nevertheless, today I wanted to invite you to consider that your house can be a church as well. This is going to depend on how your neighbors see your house. Will your house be a place where the Lord is worshiped? Keep the popular refrain in mind: “And that says he is a Christian.”

Prayer:  Lord, may my house be a place where you are always a guest. Amen.

IGLESIA EN LA CASA

Los que llevamos algunos años ya en la Iglesia, hemos visto como en estos últimos años han proliferado en nuestras ciudades las llamadas “casas culto”. En la mayoría de los casos responden al hecho de nuevas denominaciones que no        poseían un templo con anterioridad. En otros casos ha sido una solución temporal al hecho de no poder contar con un templo en un lugar dado. Son casas que sus propietarios han accedido a prestarlas para el uso de una iglesia donde se puedan reunir un grupo de feligreses.

Quizás, cuando el apóstol Pablo se refería al hogar de Priscila y Aquila, lo hacía en este sentido de un lugar donde se podían reunir las hermanas y los hermanos para adorar al Señor. Sin embargo, yo quisiera en este día invitarte a considerar que tu casa también puede ser una iglesia. Esto va a depender de cómo tus vecinos ven tu casa. ¿Será tu casa un lugar donde se adore al Señor? Ten presente el refrán popular꞉ ‟y eso que dice que es cristianoˮ.

Oración꞉ Señor, permite que mi casa pueda ser un lugar donde siempre tú seas un huésped. Amén.

Hebrews 13:1-2

“Let us help our brothers in need,

let us practice hospitality”

Romans 12:13

The number of visits increases with the arrival of summer in many of our homes, and on occasion we ourselves become visitors. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews begins this final section with a recommendation relating to fraternal love remaining among the community, and that it may especially manifest itself in hospitality.

Hospitality is a word that comes to us from Latin, with a somewhat obscured meaning. If, on one hand, it’s quite certain it can denote receiving a guest in our home, it can also mean that it’s an enemy (hostile). Perhaps the term may be clarified by the measure in which we are capable of transforming an enemy into a brother through our hospitality.

The author of the Book of Hebrews tells us that thanks to hospitality “some of us without knowing it have hosted angels.” This call invites us today to consider to what point our communities are able and willing to practice love.

Prayer:  Father, today may I love all those people who arrive at my home in such a way that they can feel themselves to be guests. Amen.

Con la llegada del verano en muchos de nuestros hogares se acrecientan las visitas y, en ocasiones, nosotros mismos nos convertimos en visitantes. El autor de la Carta a los Hebreos comienza esta sección final con una recomendación relacionada con que el amor fraternal permanezca en medio de la comunidad, y que especialmente se manifieste en la hospitalidad.

Hospitalidad es un vocablo que nos viene del latín y con un significado un tanto obscuro. Si bien es cierto que por una parte puede significar recibir un invitado en nuestra casa‚ también puede significar el que es un enemigo (hostil). Quizás el término se aclare en la medida en que con nuestra hospitalidad seamos capaces de transformar un enemigo en un hermano.

El autor de la Carta a los Hebreos nos dice que gracia a la hospitalidad “algunos si saberlo, hospedaron ángeles”. Este llamado nos invita a considerar hoy hasta qué punto estamos dispuestos en nuestras comunidades a practicar el amor.

Oración꞉ Padre, permíteme que hoy pueda amar de tal manera a todas aquellas personas que lleguen a mi hogar que se puedan sentir huéspedes. Amén.

FRUITS OF THE SPIRIT

2 Corinthians 13:11-14

“Brothers, rejoice, be perfect, console each other;

be of the same feeling, and live in peace”

2 Corinthians 13:11a

The Corinthian church was trouble; a simple reading of the collection of letters that Paul exchanged with this congregation is sufficient to understand some of the problems they were experiencing. There had been divisions among the members brought about by some of the itinerant pastors: problems of immorality, doctrinal problems, etc.

But, could those problems have been exclusive to the Corinthian church? Do we not find them as well in our congregations? How do we confront these situations? A careful reading of these letters to the Corinthians is advisable to discover principles we could put into practice in our own congregations.

I believe Paul’s formula is still applicable today: “Rejoice, be perfect, console one another; be of the same feeling, and live in peace.” You might think that this is easier said than done, as it doesn’t depend on you alone. But if today I make the attempt to put it into practice, won’t a change in my community be attained?

Prayer:   Lord, allow the fruits of the spirit to begin in my life and in my community. Amen.

Día Internacional de la Paz

FRUTOS DEL ESPÍRITU

2 Corintios 13:11-14

“Hermanos, regocíjense, perfecciónense, consuélense;

sean de un mismo sentir, y vivan en paz”

La iglesia de Corinto se las traía; basta una simple lectura al epistolario que Pablo intercambió con esta congregación para comprender algunos de los problemas por los cuales estaban transitando. Había divisiones entre los feligreses por causa de los pastores que habían pasado por allí, problemas de inmoralidades, problemas doctrinales, etc.

Pero, ¿acaso estos problemas eran exclusivos de la iglesia de Corinto? ¿No los encontramos también en nuestras congregaciones? ¿Cómo enfrentar estas situaciones? Es aconsejable una lectura cuidadosa de estas cartas a los Corintios para buscar principios que pudiéramos poner en práctica en nuestras congregaciones.

Creo que la fórmula de Pablo mantiene plena vigencia꞉ ‟regocíjense, perfecciónense, consuélense; sean de un mismo sentir, y vivan en paz”. Es posible que puedas pensar que esto es muy fácil decirlo, pero muy difícil llevarlo a la práctica, porque no depende solamente de mi. Pero, y si hoy yo trato de irlo poniendo en práctica, ¿no se logrará un cambio en mi comunidad?

Oración꞉ Señor, comienza los frutos del Espíritu en mi vida y en mi comunidad. Amén.
