LET US BE SPRINGS OF LIVING WATER

JOHN 6:34-35

… and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.

John 6:35b

A while ago I went to Topes de Collantes and amid its natural beauty, I was able to observe springs coming out in the middle of the mountains.  Even on the hottest days, the water was fresh and crystalline.

Upon encountering these springs I remembered these biblical verses.  Jesus gives us the possibility of believing in Him, so that we will never be thirsty.

Our world has a great thirst.  Pure water is scarce in many countries. Similarly, our Christian life sometimes dries up and we need the water that Jesus offers us.

Let us drink from that water; let us distance ourselves from bad thoughts, resentments, envy, an excessive love of money, violence…

Let us be cordial, friendly and loving. Let us show and give others that fresh water that springs forth from our mouths when we believe in the Teacher.

Whether you are beginning or ending this day, don’t forget to ask yourself: How can I be this spring of living water for others?

Prayer: Lord, help us to separate ourselves from those obstacles that keep us from coming to you for living water and from offering it to others. Amen.

SEAMOS MANANTIALES  DE AGUA VIVA

JUAN 6:34-35

… el que en mí cree nunca más volverá a tener sed.

Juan 6:35b

Hace algún tiempo fui a Topes de Collantes y entre la belleza natural de lugar, pude observar manantiales que salían en medio de las montañas. Aún en los días más calurosos esta agua estaba fresca y cristalina.

Cuando me encontré con esos manantiales recordé estos versículos bíblicos. Jesús nos da la posibilidad de creer en Él, para así no tener sed jamás.

Nuestro mundo tiene una gran sed. El agua pura escasea en muchos países. De igual manera nuestra vida cristiana a veces se torna árida y necesitamos de esa agua que Jesús nos ofrece.

Bebamos de esa agua, alejémonos de los malos pensamientos, rencores, envidias, amor desmedido al dinero, violencias...

Seamos cordiales, amistosos y amables. Mostremos y brindemos a otros esa agua fresca que sale de nuestra boca cuando creemos en el Maestro.

Sea que comiences o termines este día no dejes de preguntarte ¿Cómo puedo ser ese manantial de agua viva para los demás?

Oración: Señor, ayúdanos a apartarnos de los afanes para venir a ti por agua viva y brindar a otros de ella. Amén.

IN ORDER TO KEEP ON WALKING

JOHN 4:1-26

When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?”

John 4:7

This passage suggests that Jesus took the road through Samaria in order to go to Galilee. It was an exhausting hour of the day, and it is clear to us that he felt weary.  Thus we have the story of an encounter between a Jewish man and a Samaritan woman, who was alone by a well. As the man pauses to take a rest stop on his journey, he decides to enter into a conversation. 

I think we could relate this to our walks in life and in faith. We might imagine taking a rest stop, pausing to think about what we have done and what we are doing, but especially about how we are feeling today, our needs, any help that we need to request in order to keep on walking.

Jesus stopped and was thirsty; he needed water and he asked for it from a simple woman.  Give me a drink, he said without fear.

Let us take a rest stop and acknowledge our needs.  Perhaps God manifests himself to us through those we least imagine, in order to quench our thirst.

Prayer: Father, we pray that you would unite us on this journey of needs and problems, but also of joys and dreams.  Give us the strength to stop and think about our next steps, before taking them. Amen.

PARA SEGUIR CAMINANDO

JUAN 4: 1-26

En eso llegó a sacar agua una mujer de Samaria,

y Jesús le dijo: Dame un poco de agua.

Juan 4: 8

El texto sugiere que Jesús toma el camino de Samaria para ir a Galilea. Era una hora agotadora en el día, se nos deja claro que sentía cansancio. Esta es pues la historia del encuentro de un hombre judío con una mujer samaritana, que estaba sola en un pozo. Aquel hombre se detiene a descansar, a hacer un alto en el camino, decide conversar.

Pienso que podemos reflexionar en nuestros caminos de vida y de fe. Pudiéramos imaginariamente hacer una pausa, detenernos a meditar sobre lo que hemos hecho y lo que estamos haciendo, pero sobre todo reflexionar acerca de cómo nos sentimos hoy, qué necesidades tenemos, que ayuda deseamos pedir para seguir caminando.

Jesús se detuvo y sintió sed, él necesitaba agua y la pide a aquella sencilla mujer. Dame de beber, dijo sin temor.

Hagamos un alto y reconozcamos nuestras necesidades. Quizás Dios se nos manifiesta a través de quienes menos imaginemos para calmar nuestra sed.

Oración: Padre, te pedimos que nos unas cada vez más en este camino de necesidades y problemas, pero también de alegrías y sueños. Danos fuerzas para detenernos a pensar en los siguientes pasos, antes de darlos. Amén

SO THAT THE WORLD MAY BELIEVE

JOHN 17:20-26

…that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.

John 17:21

The world is this place where we all live, including those who do not confess any faith or who manifest a faith different from ours.

Throughout many decades our society has seen these differences as the cause of disunity, with diversity making it impossible to achieve unity.

In light of this, our faith communities should build themselves into a sign of unity in a world that prefers the establishment of borders and the creation of islands.  We need for others to see us among them as a Church united in its diversity, in which no one feels like a foreigner or excluded.

Let us live our lives by the verses of the song:

By joining our hands, we are united in our walk;

May weariness be left behind us along the way.

Let us sow love, tenderness, friendship;

Let us carry and bestow the Peace of Christ.

Prayer: Father, grant that we may be light in the midst of darkness.  Enable us to be examples of unity and to share your hope amid uncertainty. Amen.

SAVING WORDS

MARK 7: 24-30

Then Jesus told her, “For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter.”

Mark 7:29

It would be very good if, like this woman, we were willing to intercede for another’s needs without getting tired, with the strength and the love with which a mother asks for her daughter to be healed.

It should be clear to us that, in order to achieve good relationships, the way in which we ask others to meet our needs, to a large degree guarantees that we will get what we desire.

The rapidity and the despair in which most of us live today might result in ignoring or refusing help. This story, however, encourages us to make a stop in our lives, in order to listen to the cries of so many who are waiting for us to help them by seeking a solution to their problems, to their illnesses, to their uncertainty.

God has charged us with responding positively to the incessant plea of those around us.

Prayer: Lord, open our ears to the needs of others.  Grant that we be compassionate in the face of another’s pain.  Amen.

PALABRAS SALVADORAS

MARCOS  7: 24-30

Jesús le dijo: por haberme respondido así,

puedes irte tranquila; el demonio ha salido de tu hija.

Cuán bueno sería que, como esta mujer, estuviéramos dispuestos a interceder sin cansarnos, por la necesidad del otro, con la fuerza y el amor con que una madre pide salud para su hija.

Debe quedarnos claro que, para el logro de nuestras buenas relaciones, la manera en que pidamos a otros lo que necesitamos, es en gran medida, la garantía de lograr lo que queremos.

La rapidez y la desesperación en que muchos vivimos hoy, puede hacer que nos ignoremos o rechacemos;  sin embargo, esta historia invita a que hagamos un alto en nuestras vidas, para escuchar el clamor de muchos, que hoy esperan que les ayudemos en la solución de sus problemas, de sus enfermedades, de su incertidumbre.

Dios nos ha encargado responder positivamente a la súplica incesante de quienes nos rodean.

Oración: Señor, abre nuestros oídos a la necesidad de otros. Permite que seamos compasivos ante el dolor ajeno. Amén.

LET’S GO FORWARD WITH CONFIDENCE

EXODUS 14:13-18

 Do not be afraid,

stand firm, and see the deliverance

that the LORD will accomplish for you today

Exodus14:13a

Our lives today are spent running from one thing to another; we want to make everything quick–even answers from God. I ask myself, when was the last time that we admired a sunrise or a sunset? When do we stop to look at the beauty of a flower, or even of a wildflower?

I think we can sense God’s voice when he tell us: Don’t be afraid, only wait a little more. The Lord can part our Red Sea of difficulties.

Then he said: Tell your people to move on. After entrusting and putting our problems in the Lord’s hands, he expects us to move forward with confidence. Our daily race does not need speed; it only needs confidence and faith in the Lord.

He will show us the way, and we will move ahead.

Oración: Lord, help us to hope and to trust! Give us strength and wisdom.  Amen.

MARCHEMOS CONFIADOS

EXODO 14:13-18

No tengan miedo, les respondió Moisés.

Mantengan sus posiciones, que hoy mismo

serán testigos de la salvación que el Señor

realizará en favor de ustedes.

Éxodo 14, 13a

Vivimos hoy corriendo, queremos hacer todo rápido y aún queremos respuestas de Dios.

Me pregunto, ¿cuándo fue la última vez que admiramos un amanecer o un atardecer? ¿Cuándo miramos la belleza de una flor, aún de las silvestres?

Pienso que podemos sentir la voz de Dios cuando nos dice: No tengan miedo, solamente espera un poco más. El Señor puede abrir nuestro Mar Rojo de dificultades.

Después dijo: Dile a tu pueblo que marche. Después de encomendar o poner nuestros problemas en manos del Señor, Él espera que marchemos confiados. Nuestra carrera diaria no amerita de rapidez, sino de confianza y fe en el Señor.

Él nos mostrará el camino e irá delante.

Oración: ¡Señor, ayúdanos a esperar y a confiar! Concédenos valor y sabiduría. Amén.

BEING HAPPY IS NOT A SIN

JOHN 2:1-11.

But you have kept the good wine until now

John 2:10c

The Jesus that this story depicts is not a bitter soul, but rather one who enjoys the happiness of others. He was always alert to what was going on around him, seeking to convert sorrow into joy.

Despite knowing this, we sometimes display sorrow as an essential part of the Christian faith, denying ourselves the opportunity to appreciate the greatest mark of Jesus’ presence in each small moment of joy–moments that do not return. Perhaps those who are with me today will not be here tomorrow. That’s why we need to live fully in the happiness of each day, of every occasion that God gives to us. We should learn to discover Jesus in the joy of each small moment, in the daily miracles, but also in those hard moments, moments of fear and sorrow.

Let’s invite Jesus into the feast of our lives every day, for only in so doing can we replace what saddens us with the wine of happiness that fills us with the strength to live.

Prayer: Lord, turn our sadness into joy in order to move closer to you. Let us make miracles in the lives of others so that they do not lack any joy in the feast of life.  Amen.

NO ES PECADO SER FELIZ

JUAN 2:1-11.

Tú has guardado el mejor vino hasta ahora.

El Jesús que nos muestra esta historia no era un amargado, sino que disfrutaba la alegría de otros. Siempre estaba atento a lo que pasaba a su alrededor, buscando transformar la tristeza en alegría.

A pesar de saber esto, a veces mostramos la tristeza como parte esencial de la fe cristiana, negándonos a la realidad de que las más grandes señales de la presencia de Jesús las podemos apreciar en cada pequeño momento de alegría. Momentos que no vuelven. Quizás aquellos que hoy comparten conmigo mañana no estén. Por eso necesitamos habitar plenamente en la felicidad de cada día, en toda ocasión que nos regale Dios.

Debemos aprender a descubrir a Jesús en la alegría de cada pequeño momento, en los milagros cotidianos, pero también en los duros momentos, los de miedo y tristeza.

Invitemos a Jesús cada día a la fiesta de nuestra vida, solo así podrá sustituir lo que nos entristece, con el vino de la alegría que nos llena de fuerzas para vivir.

Oración: Señor, convierte nuestra tristeza en alegría para caminar hacia ti. Que podamos hacer milagros en la vida de otros, para que no les falte la alegría en la fiesta de la vida. Amén.

THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE POOR

PSALM 14

. . . for God is with the company of the righteous.

Psalm 14:5b

Our people have endured decades without even such basic necessities as food, clothing, footwear and so on. We have had to adapt ourselves to scarcity, to improvise and be creative in order to survive. However, many of us have drifted away from such values as honesty and humility, sometimes under duress of vital necessity, but other times succumbing to tantalizing comfort.

Some of our social environments have become spaces which deny the values learned in the journey of faith. The word “resolve,” which has become common, initially referred to survival, but now has become the definition of criminal acts for the purpose of accumulating material goods.

Those who seek only economic well-being shut their ears to the words of those who prioritize values and conscience. We know that to walk in righteousness in an environment of corruption guarantees not only poverty but also integrity.

God helps those who persevere in the way commanded by the values learned from his word of life.

Prayer: O God our God, grant us the wisdom to trust in your word and in the hope that our needs will be fulfilled by you.  Amen.

LA JUSTEZA DEL POBRE

Salmo 14: 5b

Nuestro pueblo ha caminado durante décadas, en medio de necesidades básicas como el alimento, la ropa, el calzado y otras. Hemos tenido que adaptarnos ante la escasez, improvisar y ser creativos para sobrevivir.

Pero también muchos de nosotros nos hemos distanciado de valores como la honestidad y la humildad, en ocasiones forzados por necesidades vitales y en otros momentos sucumbiendo ante la tentadora comodidad.

Algunos de nuestros ambientes sociales se han convertido en espacios que niegan los valores aprendidos en el camino de la fe. Se ha hecho común la palabra “resolver”, la que inicialmente respondía a la supervivencia, ahora ha devenido en definición de actos delictivos con la finalidad de acumular bienes materiales.

Quienes no desean más que bienestar económico, cierran sus oídos a las palabras de los que priorizan los valores y la conciencia. Sabemos que caminar en rectitud, en un ambiente de corrupción garantiza pobreza, pero también integridad.

Dios ayuda a quienes perseveran en el camino dictado por los valores aprendidos de su palabra de vida.

Oración: Dios nuestro, concédenos la sensatez de confiar en tu palabra y la esperanza de que nuestras necesidades sean satisfechas por ti. Amén
