REJOICE NOW AND ALWAYS

PSALM 97

Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous, and give thanks to his holy name!

Psalm 97:12 (NRSV)

            The one who lives trusting in God’s mercy has no fear, neither suffers inconsolably from insecurity. He rejoices with each dawn of day, tries in every situation to cultivate friendship and love, searches not for self benefit but rather that of his neighbors. That’s why she can rejoice in difficult times, in drought and need, because her trust does not rest on her own strength and intelligence, but in the one who is her inspiration: the Creator God.

            Rejoice, good women and men, and give thanks to God! The Lord our God is a God of justice and love who protects and sustains those who conduct themselves with honesty and faithfulness.

            Don’t spend your lives complaining all the time, throwing blame on other people or things: the weather, heat, money, transportation, the evil character of those around you. Rather, be glad for life, because God has allowed you to see this day, because you can work, because you can be collaborators with God. This is the way to praise God with all your strength, heart and mind.

Prayer: Thank you, my good God, for the certainty that you are at our side and never abandon us. Amen.

ALÉGRENSE HOY Y SIEMPRE

SALMO 97

¡Alégrense hombres buenos y alaben su santo nombre!

Salmo 97:12

            Quien vive confiando en la misericordia de Dios no tiene miedo, ni sufre inconsolable por falta de seguridad. Se alegra con cada amanecer, procura en todo momento cultivar la amistad y el amor, no busca solo su beneficio, sino también el de su prójimo. Por eso puede alegrarse en tiempos de dificultades, en épocas de sequía  y necesidad, porque su confianza no estáá puesta en su propia fuerza e inteligencia, sino en aquel que es el inspirador:  en Dios creador.

            ¡Alégrense mujeres y hombres buenos y alaben a Dios! El Señor nuestro Dios es un Dios de justicia y amor que protege y sostiene a quienes se conducen con honradez y fidelidad.

            No vivan quejándose todo el tiempo, echándole la culpa a los demás o a las cosas: al tiempo, al  calor, al dinero, al transporte, al mal carácter de los demás; más bien, alégrense por la vida, porque Dios les ha permitido vivir hasta hoy, porque pueden trabajar, porque pueden ser colaboradores de Dios. De esta manera están alabando  a Dios con todas sus fuerzas, corazones y mentes.

Oración: Gracias mi buen Dios, por la certeza de sentir que estás a nuestro lado y  nunca nos abandonas. Amén.

WILL THIS BE DOMINATION?

GENESIS 1:24-28

Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.”

Genesis 1:26 (NRSV)

            Some time ago we saw a video on TV showing a child in his mother's womb, who curiously poked his head out as if through a skylight. The baby looked around and saw a sky full of smoke, saw that the sea was contaminated, looked also for a place to live where people aren’t judged by the color of their skin nor by their philosophical or political stance, and not finding any, closes his window, starts crying and right then decides not to enter that world.

            Have we ever thought that it's faster to rebuild a bridge than to decontaminate a river? Or what we will have to do to accept everyone else just as they are? How many generations will it take to teach people that the garbage in our homes should not be thrown directly into the street even if the street is dirty? How much time will it take to stop being lazy and indifferent?

Prayer: Dear God, forgive us for being indifferent to the good that you have showered upon us. Give us another chance to rebuild what we have destroyed. Give us the capacity to accept differences. Amen.

Día Mundial del Medio Ambiente

¿SERÁ ESTO SEÑOREAR?

Génesis 1: 24-28

Entonces dijo Dios: Hagamos al hombre a nuestra imagen, conforme a nuestra semejanza; y señoree en los peces del mar, en las aves de los cielos, en las bestias, en toda la tierra, y en todo animal que se arrastra sobre la tierra.

Génesis 1:26 

            Hace un tiempo vimos por la TV un vídeo donde se mostraba a un niño en el vientre de su madre, que curioso, asomaba su cabeza como por una claraboya. El bebé miraba a su alrededor y veía un cielo lleno de humo, miraba hacia el mar y estaba contaminado, buscaba también un lugar donde vivir en que a las personas no se les juzgara por el color de su piel, ni por su posición filosófica o política, y no lo encuentra, entonces cierra su ventanilla, se echa a llorar, y en ese momento decide no entrar en ese mundo.

            ¿Hemos pensado alguna vez que es más rápido reconstruir un puente que descontaminar un río?, ¿qué debemos hacer para aceptar a los demás tal como son? ¿Cuántas generaciones harán falta para enseñarle a las personas que la basura de nuestras casas no se debe tirar directamente a la calle aunque estas se encuentren sucias? ¿Qué tiempo se necesita para dejar de ser indolentes, indiferentes?

Oración: Oh Dios perdónanos por ser tan indiferentes ante lo bueno que tú nos has regalado. Danos otra oportunidad para rehacer lo que hemos destruido. Danos la capacidad para aceptar las diferencias. Amén.

A FAMILY FOR THE LONELY

 PSALM 68:5-6

God gives the desolate a home to live in

Psalm 68:6 (NRSV)

            Many people live complaining about their loneliness and fervently wish they had company. In reality, challenges are best met when shared, but let’s ponder how many people live surrounded by other people but experience the same feeling of loneliness and abandonment. Today’s invitation is to reflect on that family that God gives to the lonely, to those who are sick or in crisis. God never abandons us, always sending angels who care for us. 

            When many people think about the church, they think only of attending Sunday worship. But that is only a part. The Church is a family of sisters and brothers who have responded to the call of Jesus Christ as Lord and who come together to learn and to serve in communion. Prayer groups, bible studies are all vital parts of the communion of the Church.

            Try not to just go to listen to the sermon, but participate in the life of the Church and feel that that is God’s family that God has given to you to help you confront a crisis or survive difficulties. If you have not been attending Church regularly, start now. Search out sisters and brothers with whom you can identify, talk to, and find the support you need.

Prayer: God of family, thank you for the angels who have helped me along the path of life. Thank you for giving me a family and the Church as the family of faith. Amen.

UNA FAMILIA PARA LOS SOLITARIOS

SALMO 68:5-6

Dios hace habitar en familia a los desamparados

Salmo 68:6

            Muchas personas viven quejándose por su soledad y añoran fervientemente una compañía. En realidad, los retos compartidos se enfrentan mejor, pero pensemos en cuántas personas viven rodeadas de gente y perciben el mismo sentimiento de soledad y abandono. La invitación de hoy es a reflexionar en esa familia que Dios da a los solitarios, a las personas enfermas y en crisis. Él nunca nos abandona, siempre envía sus ángeles que tienen cuidado de nosotros.

            Cuando muchos piensan en la iglesia, lo hacen solo en asistir al culto de adoración del domingo. Pero eso es solo una parte. La iglesia es una familia de hermanas y hermanos que hemos respondido  al llamado de  Jesucristo  como Señor y que venimos juntos para aprender y servir en comunión. Los grupos de oración o de estudios bíblicos son vitales para la comunión de una iglesia.

            Procura no limitarte a ir a escuchar el sermón del domingo, participa de la vida de la iglesia y siente que esa también es la familia que Dios te da para ayudarte a enfrentar las crisis y sobrellevar las cargas. Si no has estado asistiendo a la iglesia regularmente, comienza ya. Busca hermanas y hermanos con los que puedas identificarte, con los que puedas hablar y encuentra así el apoyo que necesitas.

Oración: Gracias Dios de la familia, por los ángeles que me han cuidado en el camino de la vida. Gracias por darme una familia y a la iglesia como familia de la fe. Amén.
