A compassionate and NEARBY God

matthew 9: 35-38

“Therefore, plead with the Lord of the harvest to send out workers for his harvest.”

How hard it has been for human beings to believe in a nearby God, to believe in a God who is amid the suffering of the people.  We are more convinced of the opposite—always   imagining a God who is beyond us, sitting on his throne, enveloped in his glory and power.

The Gospel for today belies this distant and inaccessible posture that we have constructed for God.  Jesus is human, the human face of God, and he sympathizes with an exhausted and abandoned crowd.  God incarnate in Jesus does not only think about the human being, he is committed to and suffers with this same human being. God has not bet on the uncertainty of humans but has lived a life in human form. 

God is not just a passive listener; God is an active collaborator in the concrete and objective reality of his people.  In the person of Jesus, God himself came to heal and to save humanity. 

This short passage serves as a bridge between the story of the ministry of Jesus and the extension of his ministry to his disciples.  The need was too much for Jesus to fill alone, and thus he asked for help from some of his closest followers.  The base of this mission was compassion, a strong word for the touching answer that always resulted in caring action that we all should imitate.

Prayer:  My compassionate God, may the multitude also touch us and push us to be caring like you.  Amen.

UN DIOS compasivo y CERCANO

Mateo 9: 35-38

¡Qué difícil le ha sido a los seres humanos creer en un Dios cercano, creer en un Dios que está en medio del sufrimiento de los pueblos! Por muy convencido que estemos de lo contrario siempre tendemos a representarnos en un Dios “del más allá”, sentado en su trono, envuelto en gloria y poder.

El Evangelio de hoy desmiente esa postura lejana e inaccesible que nosotros nos hemos construido de Él. Jesús que es la humanidad o sea la cara humana de Dios, se compadece de una muchedumbre extenuada y abandonada. El Dios encarnado en Jesús no sólo contempla al ser humano, también se compromete y sufre con ese mismo ser humano. Dios no ha apostado por una humanidad incierta sino por distintos rostros dañados por la imperfección.

Dios no es un simple oyente pasivo; es un colaborador activo en la realidad concreta y objetiva de su pueblo. En la persona de Jesús Dios mismo venía a sanar y a salvar la humanidad.

Este breve pasaje sirve de puente entre el relato del ministerio de Jesús y la extensión de ese ministerio a sus discípulos. La necesidad era demasiado grande para cumplirla Jesús solo, así que pidió ayuda a algunos de sus seguidores más cercanos. La base de esta misión era la compasión, una palabra fuerte para una respuesta conmovedora que siempre da como resultado una acción de cuidado que todos debemos imitar.

Oración: Mi Dios compasivo que también a nosotros la multitud nos conmueva y nos impulse a su cuidado. Amén.

JESUS SEES ALL

REVELATION 2:1-7

I know your works, your labor, and your endurance.

...But I have this against you:  you have let go of the love you had at first.

Revelation 2:2-4 (CEB)

Perhaps it has happened to you that when you served in some way in your congregation, no one noticed your work, nor appreciated it—it went unnoticed.  And you were left frustrated, deciding to let others do the rest of the job.

How many tasks in our congregation are done silently!  Among them are the cleaning, putting flowers in the sanctuary, or greeting visitors to worship.  And if the members of your church or the leaders do not value these tasks properly, our Lord Jesus does, as we can read in today’s verse:  I know your works. 

Jesus sees with joy when members of the congregation offer their time and strength to sing with the choir, to meet in Bible studies and prayer groups, to visit the sick.  Jesus sees the efforts of the Sunday School teachers who prepare to lead classes on Sundays. 

Jesus sees what we do in the church.  But he also sees the aspects of tiredness, of routine.  Of course, He does not want us to do things out of routine, but out of the love we had at first, discovering anew each time the gift of the life of Jesus.

Prayer:  Free us, Lord, we ask you, from routines and traditions that bind us.  Free us from apathy and tiredness.  Renew us more each day.  Amen.

JESÚS LO VE TODO

APOCALIPSIS 2:1-7

Yo sé todo lo que hacen, conozco tu duro trabajo

y tu constancia... Pero tengo una cosa contra ti:

que ya no tienes el mismo amor que al principio.

Apocalipsis 2:2-4

 Tal vez le haya pasado que en determinadas circunstancias se empeñó en colaborar en su congregación, pero su trabajo ni lo notaron, ni lo agradecieron, pasó inadvertido. Y usted se quedó frustrado, decidido a que los demás hagan lo que resta por hacer.

¡Cuántas tareas en nuestra congregación se realizan silenciosamente! Entre ellas están la limpieza, flores del templo, atención y recepción de los visitantes al culto. Y si los miembros de tu iglesia o los dirigentes no lo valoran debidamente, el Señor Jesús sí, como podemos leer en el versículo de hoy: Yo sé todo lo que hacen.

Jesús ve con alegría cuando miembros de la congregación ofrecen su tiempo y esfuerzo para reunirse en el coro, en los estudios bíblicos y células de oraciones, en visitas a los enfermos. Jesús ve los esfuerzos de los maestros de escuelas dominicales que se preparan para impartir clases los domingos.

Jesús ve lo que hacemos en la iglesia. Pero también registra los aspectos de cansancio, de costumbres. Por supuesto que Él no quiere que hagamos las cosas por costumbre, sino con el amor del principio, descubriendo cada vez de nuevo la entrega de la vida de Jesús.

Oración: Líbranos Señor, te lo pedimos, de costumbres y tradiciones que nos atan. Líbranos de apatías y cansancios. Renuévanos cada día más. Amén.

WE GLORIFY THE NAME OF GOD

JOHN 12: 27-28

Now I am deeply troubled.  What should I say?  “Father, save me from this time?”

 No, for this is the reason I have come to this time.

John 12:27 (CEB)

 

In life, at times we feel pain covering every part of our body and our heart shrinks in the face of such suffering.  In this situation, we go before the Father, with an endless plea, saying: “Father save me from this hour” or “Free me from this anguish.”  However, as Christians, we must learn to live with the certainty that each succeeding pain of our life shapes part of the grand plan of our God, who always keeps walking toward what is good and perfect.

Thus, we live in peace and trust, without needing to understand why this or that happened to us, but simply allowing ourselves to be carried by the Spirit.  Glorify the Father, then, for we have come into this world, and so that, with God’s help, we learn, trust, serve, love and smile even in the midst of pain.

Prayer:   Lord, give me strength so that even in my greatest moments of anguish and despair, I can glorify you.  Amen.

GLORIFIQUEMOS EL NOMBRE DE DIOS

En la vida, por momentos sentimos que el dolor inunda cada parte de nuestro cuerpo y el corazón se empequeñece ante tanto sufrimiento. En esas circunstancias acudimos al Padre, con un ruego interminable diciendo: “Padre, sálvame de esta hora” o “líbrame de esta angustia”. Sin embargo, como cristianos, debemos aprender a vivir con la certeza de que cada suceso doloroso de nuestra vida forma parte de un plan mayor de nuestro Dios, que siempre va encaminado hacia lo bueno y lo que es perfecto.

Por ello, vivamos tranquilos y confiados, no queriendo entender por qué nos sucede esto o aquello, sino dejándonos llevar por el Espíritu.

Glorifique entonces al Padre, pues hemos venido a este mundo, para con su ayuda, aprender a confiar, servir, amar y sonreír aún en medio del dolor.

Oración: Señor, dame fuerzas para que aún, en mi mayor momento de angustia y desesperación yo pueda glorificarte. Amén.

NO WORDS NEEDED

EPHESIANS 1:1-10

God destined us to be his adopted children

through Jesus Christ because of his love….

Ephesians 1:5a (CEB)

The apostle’s letter confronts us with the saving work of God through Jesus Christ.  The love of God appears as a liberating element offered through Jesus Christ.  How much more value is added to the message when we consider that Paul was writing the letter as a prisoner!  At times we are also prisoners to the demands of life, where nothing satisfies us:  not money, not time; we are trapped in well thought-out proposals by scholars of human behavior.

What place do we give the love of God in our lives?  Does the liberating message reach us in the chasm where we live, thinking that everything must be bought or sold?  This love is not found in the market, nor in the field, nor in the pantry:  it shows through our neighbor.

One word at a time when it is needed, one attentive ear to the suffering or joy we have around us, one hand open to help, one kind greeting, and many other gestures are able to transform us; and when they are accompanied by love they touch deeply into our being.  And it most interesting that we can distinguish the good gestures from those which come charged with rancor and hate.  Isn’t it true?  Words are not needed when love is in the gesture.

Let us be encouraged to show the love we receive from the grace of God as believers.  Let us use the freedom that God gives us to show it and not to stop saying in whom we believe.  How important it becomes then to know that God loves us and forgives us, so that we can start fresh and be reconciled within ourselves and with others.  This is our hope.

Prayer:  Lord, today we want to love like you love us and free us. Amen.

NO SE NECESITAN PALABRAS

La carta del apóstol nos pone frente a la obra salvadora de Dios por medio de Jesucristo. El amor de Dios aparece como elemento liberador brindado a través de Jesucristo. ¡Cuánto más valor cobra el mensaje si tenemos en cuenta que Pablo estaba preso al escribirlo! Hoy nosotros somos también  presos a veces de las exigencias, donde nada nos alcanza: ni el dinero, ni el tiempo; atrapados en propuestas bien pensadas por estudiosos del comportamiento humano.

¿Qué lugar damos al amor de Dios en nuestras vidas? ¿Nos llega el mensaje liberador en esta vorágine de que todo está en compra o en venta? Ese amor no está en el mercado, ni en el agro, ni en la bodega; se pone de manifiesto a través del prójimo.

Una palabra a tiempo a quien la necesita, un oído atento al sufrimiento o a la alegría de quien tenemos cerca, una mano dispuesta a ayudar, un saludo afectuoso y muchos gestos son capaces de transformarnos; y cuando están acompañados de amor tocan lo más profundo de nuestro ser. Y lo más interesante es lo bien que lo distinguimos de aquellos que vienen cargados de rencor y de odio. ¿verdad que sí? No se necesitan palabras cuando el amor está en el gesto.

Animémonos a manifestar el amor que recibimos por la sola gracia de Dios como creyentes. Usemos la libertad que nos es dada para manifestarlo y no dejemos de decir en qué creemos. ¡Qué importante se torna entonces saber que Dios nos ama y perdona, para así poder recomenzar y reconciliarnos con nosotros mismos y con los otros! Esa es nuestra esperanza.

Oración: Señor, queremos hoy amar como tú nos amas y liberas. Amén

BEING TRUE CHRISTIANS

EPHESIANS 5:15-20

So be careful to live your life wisely, not foolishly.

Many times, we have asked ourselves what it means to be Christian.  Today’s text gives us some parts of the definition, perhaps in an unusual way to read the Bible:  a call to live as one who knows what he does, being aware of his actions.  Is this a little thing?  No way!

Some believe that the only the act of being baptized makes us Christians.  Others maintain that a Christian must do certain things on certain days, for example:  respect the Sabbath, give a tithe, fast, go to worship without fail, take communion.  The different opinions must be respected.

A Christian is not only someone who does these things; a Christian is not only someone good, someone who does not kill or steal or any other items in a list of bad things.  It certainly involves all these things, but to be a Christian goes beyond this.

The name of “Christian” was given for the first time to the disciples of Jesus who had left everything to follow him, making this Master the center of their lives.  From this comes the term “Christian”:  to make Jesus the center of one’s life. This is what it takes for a Christian to confess and then to act with love and compassion.  It is a bit like acting as people who are aware of their actions.  How easy!  Right?

Prayer:     Lord, permit us to be true Christians.  We want to have you as the center of our lives.  You give us peace and life eternal.  Amen.

SIENDO VERDADEROS CRISTIANOS

EFESIOS 5:15-20

Vivan como gente que piensa lo que hace, y no como tontos

Efesios 5:15b

Muchas veces nos hemos preguntado sobre lo que significa ser cristianos. El texto de hoy nos da algunos elementos, quizás de un modo no acostumbrado, para leer la Biblia: llama a vivir como quien sabe lo que hace, a tener conciencia en los actos. ¿Poca cosa? Para nada.

Algunos creen que el solo hecho de estar bautizados ya los hace cristianos. Otros sostienen que hay que hacer determinadas cosas ciertos días, por ejemplo: respetar el sábado, dar el diezmo, ayunar, ir a culto sin faltar, comulgar, etc. Son diferentes opiniones al respecto.

Un cristiano no es solamente alguien que hace esas cosas; un cristiano no es solamente alguien bueno, alguien que no mata, no roba y no hace una serie de cosas malas. Es cierto que involucra todas esas cosas, pero ser cristiano va más allá de eso.

El nombre de cristianos fue dado por primera vez a los discípulos de Jesús que habían dejado todo para seguirlo, haciendo de aquel Maestro el centro de sus vidas. De eso se trata el término de cristiano: hacer de Jesús el centro de la vida. Eso es lo que lleva a un cristiano a confesar y actuar en consecuencia con el amor y la compasión. Eso es un poco vivir como gente que piensa lo que hace. ¡Qué simple! ¿No?

Oración: Señor, permítenos ser verdaderos cristianos. Queremos tenerte como centro de nuestras vidas. Tú nos das paz y vida eterna. Amén.

IN FEAR OF STORMS 

ISAIAH 25:1-12

You have been a refuge for the poor…

Isaiah 25:4

Isaiah addresses himself to God amidst the storm his people are suffering. Curious, is it not? The situation is bad; there’s destruction and humiliation, but nevertheless Isaiah praises God. He succeeds in seeing God during the suffering; he recognizes that the suffering is because the chosen people – among whom God made marvels in miracles - had departed from its Creator.

That makes me think about myself, about my people, in the sufferings of people around the world. Might it also be that we’ve departed from God, and that’s the cause of so much suffering?

I was reading a book about illnesses, and one sentence caught my attention: “Pain is a shout that life makes so that you will change, although in the end the decision is always yours.” Will it be that we should change? Instead of living each day complaining, which customarily makes the situation worse, shouldn’t we seek the shelter and refuge that come from God?

Perhaps you feel that your life is passing through a storm: anxieties, loss, illnesses, whatever it may be that’s afflicting your heart. But never forget that when the storms afflict your life, God appears as a refuge and strength. There is no storm that He is unable to calm. At the length of humanity’s history, we find proof of it.

Draw closer to God. Ask him in prayer for your necessities and trust in Him, that He will do it. The pain and suffering will be things of the past. The weeping and sadness will become joy. He will care for you. If he sent his own Son to save the world, don’t you believe that he might be a refuge for you in your affliction?

Prayer: Lord, today we wish to draw near to you with the security that you are a refuge in our moments of affliction. Amen.

EN MEDIO DE LAS TORMENTAS

ISAÍAS 25:1-12

Tú has sido un refugio para el pobre…

Isaías 25:4

Isaías se dirige a Dios en medio de la tormenta que está sufriendo su pueblo. Curioso ¿no? La cosa está mal, hay destrucción y humillación; y sin embargo, Isaías alaba a Dios. Logra verlo en medio del sufrimiento. Reconoce que ese sufrimiento es porque el pueblo elegido donde Dios hizo maravillas y milagros se ha alejado de su Creador. Eso me hace pensar en mí, en mi pueblo y en los sufrimientos de las personas de todo el mundo. ¿Será que también nos hemos alejado de Dios, y esa es la causa de tanto sufrimiento?

Leía un libro sobre enfermedades, y una frase llamó mi atención: “El dolor es un grito que te hace la vida para que cambies, aunque en última instancia la decisión siempre es tuya”. ¿Será que debemos cambiar? ¿En lugar de vivir cada día lamentándonos, lo cual suele empeorar la situación, debemos buscar a través del amparo y refugio que vienen de Dios?

Quizás sientas que tu vida atraviesa una tempestad: angustias, pérdidas, enfermedades; lo que sea que esté afligiendo tu corazón. Pero nunca olvides que cuando las tormentas azotan tu vida Dios se presenta como refugio y fortaleza. No hay tempestad que Él no pueda calmar. A lo largo de la historia de la humanidad, encontramos pruebas de ello. Acércate a Dios. Pídele en oración por tu necesidad y confía en Él, que Él hará.  El dolor y el sufrimiento serán cosas del pasado. El llanto y la tristeza se convertirán en alegría. Él te cuida. Si envió a su propio Hijo para salvar al mundo, ¿no crees que pueda ser para ti un refugio en tu aflicción?

Oración: Señor, queremos hoy acercarnos a ti con la seguridad de que eres un refugio en nuestros momentos de aflicción. Amén.

WHO IS THE BEST?

MatTHEW 18:1-5

… And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change

and become like little children

you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. (NIV)

In the days in which an ice cream cost much less, a ten-year-old child entered an establishment and seated himself at a table. The waiter put a glass of water in front of him.

“How much does an ice cream with chocolate and peanuts cost?” Asked the child.

“50 centavos,” the woman replied. The child took his hand out of his pocket and examined the coins.

“How much does just an ice cream cost,” he asked again. Some people and the waiter were already a bit impatient.

“25 centavos,” the waiter said brusquely.

The child counted his money again.

“I want the ice cream alone,” he said.

The waiter brought him the ice cream and put the bill on the table and left. The child finished the ice cream, paid the check and left. When the waiter returned to clean the table, he was dumbfounded at seeing there, placed neatly beside the empty plate, was 25 centavos, his tip.

On occasion it happens just as it did to the waiter. We misjudge children or those we consider insignificant; we think they have nothing much to offer, and yes, much to learn. But Jesus warns us that they are the best, according to God’s logic.

Prayer:  Thank you Lord for your love. I pray to you that you fill me to be able to share with others. Help me to look at “the little ones” with the sensibility and the love you pour out upon us. Amen.

En los días en que un helado costaba mucho menos, un niño de diez años entró en un establecimiento y se sentó en una mesa. La mesera puso un vaso de agua enfrente de él.

- ¿cuánto cuesta un helado con chocolate y maní? –preguntó el niño.

-Cincuenta centavos- respondió la mujer.

El niño sacó la mano del bolsillo y examinó las monedas.

- ¿Cuánto cuesta el helado solo? Volvió a preguntar. Algunas personas y la camarera ya estaban un poco impacientes.

-Veinticinco centavos, dijo bruscamente

El niño volvió a contar las monedas.

-Quiero un helado solo, dijo

La mesera le trajo el helado solo, le puso la cuenta en la mesa y se retiró. El niño terminó el helado, pagó la caja y salió. Cuando la mesera volvió a limpiar la mesa, le costó tragar saliva al ver que allí, ordenadamente junto al plato vacío, había veinticinco centavos: su propina.

En ocasiones nos pasa como a la mesera, juzgamos mal a los niños o a quienes consideramos insignificantes. Pensamos que no tienen mucho que ofrecer y sí mucho que aprender. Pero Jesús nos advierte que ellos son los mayores según la lógica de Dios.

Oración: Gracias Señor, por tu amor. Te ruego me llenes para poder repartir a los demás.  Ayúdame a mirar a “los pequeñitos” con la sensibilidad y el amor que tú derramas sobre nosotros. Amén.
