Miracle Workers

Luke 7: 11-17

When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.”.

The stories of Jesus’ miracles always make us shudder. They make us think that we will never live up to such a gift..

However, if we were to dwell carefully on this text, we could observe how Jesus, in the midst of the disciples and the crowd that followed him, having just arrived from a long walk to that town, decides first to stop his march, and secondly, knowing the situation, he has compassion for this mother. This miracle begins precisely in Jesus’ willingness to accompany people, and even above his own routes, to stop and go out of his way to be useful in the face of pain. This miracle, moreover, develops in the feeling of compassion before the tears of this widow.

How many times do we stop in the midst of all our burdens and weariness to know how we can be useful to others? How many times do we allow compassion to flood us and turn us into performers of the miracle of company and comfort to those who need it?

The root of Jesus’ miracles lies in his love and commitment to those who suffer. May we continue on his path and remain alert and ready for situations where our compassion can work miracles.

 

Prayer: Jesus, may your vocation to help,  stop us in the face of pain, and allow us to offer the miracle of faith and consolation. Amen

Hacedores de Milagros

Lucas 7: 11-17

´Cuando el Señor la vio, se compadeció de ella y le dijo: ¨No llores¨.

Lucas 7: 13

Los relatos de los milagros de Jesús siempre nos estremecen. Nos hacen pensar que jamás estaremos a la altura de tal don.

 Sin embargo, si nos detenemos cuidadosamente en este texto, podríamos observar cómo Jesús, en medio de los discípulos y de la muchedumbre que lo seguía, acabado de llegar de un largo caminar hasta aquel pueblo, decide, primero detener su marcha, y segundo, al conocer la situación, se compadece de esta madre. Este milagro comienza justamente en la voluntad de Jesús de acompañar a las personas, y aún por encima de sus propias rutas, detenerse y desviarse para ser útil ante el dolor. Este milagro, además, se desarrolla en el sentimiento de compasión ante las lágrimas de esa viuda.

 ¿Cuántas veces detenemos la marcha de todos nuestros agobios y cansancios para saber cómo podemos ser útiles a otros? ¿Cuántas veces permitimos que la compasión nos inunde y nos convierta en hacedores del milagro de la compañía y el consuelo ante quien lo necesita?

 La raíz de los milagros de Jesús yace de su amor y compromiso con los que sufren. Ojalá podamos continuar su camino y mantenernos alertas y en disposición ante las situaciones donde nuestra compasión puede hacer milagros.

 

Oración: Jesús, que tu vocación por socorrer nos detenga ante el dolor, y no permita brindar el milagro de la fe y el consuelo. Amén.
