GROWING WITH
JESUS
Revelation
2:8-11

We can become involved in various strategies in
order to seek institutional growth, but we should first try for personal
growth. There are two elements that I
wish to point out that I believe are essential in the attempt to grow. The first
has to do with the personal experience of the apostles, those who had been
witnesses to so many things, who had participated in Jesus’s ministry, but now,
even more so, they knew that death cannot hold back the giver of Life. Therefore, neither could they hold back from
speaking about what they had seen and heard, nor could anyone intimidate them,
as there was nothing to lose, and much more to gain.
The first element, then, is the level of
conviction and commitment of the first believers. If we are honest, we should acknowledge that
we fall far short of the measure of those first Christians, who put nothing
before their faith.
A second element also has to do with such
behavior, and reinforces them:
scatological hope. The return of the Lord was imminent for the first
Christians; what an embarrassment for Christ to return to this world and to
find us in a poor spiritual state, denying him, even while working in support
of Him! Even when this hope of imminence began to dissipate, the Church
remained faithful to this certainty, and tried to live according to the highest
testimony, even to the point of losing their lives; the witness then became a
martyr and that is how the Greek word was accepted into our language.
Prayer: Grant that
our faithfulness to you, oh beloved Father, be our seal of growth as worthy
disciples of the One who loved us even unto death itself.

Podemos
involucrarnos en diversas estrategias para buscar un crecimiento institucional,
pero debemos tratar primero el crecimiento en el orden personal. Hay dos
elementos que quiero destacar, que creo son esenciales en el intento de crecer;
el primero tiene que ver con la experiencia propia de los apóstoles, ellos
habían sido testigos de tantas cosas, habían participado del ministerio de
Jesús; pero ahora, mucho más, conocían que la muerte no puede retener al dador
de la Vida, entonces, no podían dejar de decir aquello que habían visto y oído,
y nadie los podía intimidar, no había nada que perder, y mucho que ganar.
El
primer elemento es, entonces, el grado de convicción y compromiso de los
primeros creyentes. Si somos honestos, debemos reconocer que nos falta mucho
para llegar a la medida de aquellos primeros cristianos, que no anteponían nada
a su fe.
Un
segundo elemento tiene que ver además con tales conductas, y las refuerza: la
esperanza escatológica. Para los primeros cristianos el regreso del Señor era
inminente, ¡qué bochorno que Cristo volviera a este mundo y nos encontrara en
un pobre estado espiritual, negándole, más que trabajando en pro de Él! Aún
cuando esta esperanza de la inminencia se fue desvaneciendo la Iglesia se
mantuvo fiel a esta certeza, y trató de vivir con el testimonio más alto, aquel
que podía incluso costar la vida, el testigo pasaba a ser un mártir y como tal
la palabra griega llegó a significar tal acepción en nuestro idioma.
Oración: Que sea la fidelidad a ti,
oh Padre amado, nuestro sello de crecimiento como dignos discípulos de Aquel
que nos amó hasta la misma muerte.
