PATHWAY TO PARADISE

Isaiah 35:1-10

“Your words have supported those who stumbled;

You have strengthened faltering knees.”

Job 4:4

This poem by Isaiah is a metaphor for the return to Paradise. The coming of the Savior will transform the desert into Paradise; all sicknesses will be cured because the new Kingdom will no longer know evil: even trouble itself will disappear.

But we have to understand that we are still walking through the desert, that there are still people with broken dreams, who have no freedom, who suffer from terminal illness, who have seen their families broken apart without being able to do anything about it…This reality can change; don’t you believe that the desert can bloom as soon as we look at one another with love?

Advent is a time that invites us to believe that there is a way of return to Paradise, a joyful pathway where “no lion will be there, nor will any ferocious beast get up on it; they will not be found there. But only the redeemed will walk there, and the ransomed of the LORD will return.”

This is no dream. It is the announcement of a transformed reality.  “God is coming in person.”  And God is blessing and He is grace; He leaves everything filled with beauty and with life.  God is joyfulness.  If God comes, if God has come, what have we to fear?

Prayer: Lord, strengthen my feeble hands and sustain me when my knees falter.

CAMINO AL PARAÍSO

Isaías 35:1-10

“Si alguien caía, tus palabras lo levantaban;

tú sostenías al que estaba por caer”

Job 4:4

Este poema de Isaías es una metáfora de la vuelta al Paraíso. La venida del Salvador transformará el desierto en Paraíso; todas las enfermedades serán curadas porque el nuevo Reino no conocerá ya el mal: hasta la misma fatiga desaparecerá.

Pero tenemos que reconocer que todavía andamos por el desierto, que todavía hay personas con sueños rotos, que no tienen libertad, que padecen una enfermedad terminal, que han visto romperse su familia sin poder hacer nada por impedirlo… Esa realidad puede cambiar, ¿no  crees que el desierto puede florecer tan pronto como nos miremos unos a otros con amor?

Adviento es un tiempo que nos invita a creer que hay un camino de vuelta al Paraíso, un camino alegre donde “no habrá leones, ni pasará por él ninguna fiera, para que los redimidos del Señor puedan transitarlo”.

Esto no es un sueño. Es el anuncio de una realidad transformadora. "Dios viene en persona". Y Dios es bendición y es gracia, lo deja todo lleno de hermosura y de vida. Dios es alegría. Si Dios viene, si Dios ha venido, ¿hay algo que temer?

Oración: Señor, fortalece mis manos débiles y sostenme cuando mis rodillas flaquean.

IN TIMES OF GLOBALIZATION...

Luke 3:1-6

“The LORD has done great things for us,

And we are filled with joy”

Psalm 126:3

God’s word and the concrete reality in which the believer lives are inseparable; there is neither authentic preaching nor genuine salvation without taking into account the world in which we live. It is therefore not coincidental that Luke would frame the preaching of the Baptist within the real world of his era.

The gospel of this second Sunday of Advent calls us, in the words of John the Baptist, to “prepare the way of the Lord,” who is near.  The question for us today is:  what do I need to do in order to welcome Jesus into my heart when he comes?  What aspects of my personal life need to be straightened out, filled in or leveled?  What am I doing towards that end?

Preparing oneself is synonymous with conversion; without change, one cannot be a witness to the coming of Jesus Christ.  Let us walk toward the encounter with the Lord, without distancing ourselves or escaping from the world in which we live today, but always ready to reorient our lives so that we can see the salvation that God has prepared for us.

  

Prayer:  Lord, give me the strength I need in order to straighten my path, to build bridges, to excavate hills and open tunnels, in order to see the salvation that you promise us in Christ Jesus.

y eso nos llenará de alegría”

La palabra de Dios y la realidad concreta en la que vive el creyente son inseparables, no hay una auténtica predicación ni genuina salvación sin tomar en cuenta el mundo en el cual vivimos. No es casual entonces que Lucas enmarque la predicación del Bautista en el mundo real de su época.

El evangelio de este segundo domingo de Adviento nos llama, en palabras de Juan el Bautista, a preparar “el camino del Señor”, que ya está cerca. La pregunta hoy sería: ¿qué debo hacer para acoger en mi corazón a Jesús cuando venga? ¿Qué aspectos en mi vida personal requieren ser enderezados, rellenados y nivelados? ¿Qué estoy haciendo para lograrlo?

Prepararse es sinónimo de convertirse, quien no cambia no puede ser testigo de la venida de Jesucristo. Caminemos hacia el encuentro con el Señor, sin alejarnos o escapar del mundo en que vivimos hoy, pero siempre dispuestos a reorientar la vida para que podamos ver la salvación que Dios nos tiene preparada.

Oración: Señor, dame la fuerza que necesito para enderezar mi camino, tender puentes, excavar colinas y abrir túneles, para ver la salvación que tú nos prometes en Cristo Jesús.

PREPARING OURSELVES FOR CHRISTMAS

Isaiah 40:3-5

“Prepare the way for the people…Remove the stones…See, your Savior comes!”

Isaiah 62:10-11

When we prepare ourselves to celebrate the birth of Jesus, we cannot forget the biblical texts evoking this event announcing that a Savior will be given to us.  We then remember the prophet Isaiah, who relentlessly announced to his people that the day was drawing near and, therefore, they needed to prepare the way for the Lord.

“Prepare a way for the Lord in the desert,” the same words of John the Baptist in the Gospel of Matthew: “Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight his pathways!” The call has gone out, but…how should it be prepared?  

God calls us to “make a straight path in the wilderness to our God”.   God calls us to a new moment, to sow hope in desert regions, to build bridges of forgiveness that will help our relationships.  He calls us to extend our hands and to open a place within our hearts in order to multiply instead of dividing ourselves. This is the only way to make the world a better place; the miracle of abundant life and the creation of God’s kingdom.

Prayer: Lord, I wish to prepare myself for your coming by obeying the exhortation by Isaiah and John the Baptist, and to help to prepare a path for you that will manifest your glory.

PREPARÁNDONOS PARA LA NAVIDAD

Digan: ¡Aquí viene tu Salvador!”

Cuando nos preparamos para celebrar el nacimiento de Jesús, no podemos olvidar los textos bíblicos que evocan este suceso anunciando que un Salvador nos será dado. Entonces recordamos al profeta Isaías, quien no se cansó de anunciar a su pueblo que el día estaba cerca y, por tanto, debían preparar un camino al Señor.

“Preparen al Señor un camino en el desierto”, las mismas palabras de Juan el Bautista en el evangelio de Mateo: “¡Preparen un camino al Señor, ábranle un camino recto!”. El llamado está hecho, pero… ¿cómo prepararlo?

Dios nos llama a “enderezar en el páramo una calzada a nuestro Dios”. Dios nos llama a un momento nuevo, a sembrar esperanza en terrenos desérticos, a construir puentes de perdón que faciliten nuestras relaciones, nos llama a extender nuestras manos y abrir un sitio en nuestros corazones para multiplicarnos en lugar de dividirnos. Solo así es posible un mundo mejor, el milagro de la vida plena y la irrupción del reino de Dios.

Oración: Señor, quiero prepararme para tu venida acogiendo la exhortación de Isaías y Juan el Bautista, y ayudar a prepararte un camino para que se manifieste tu gloria.

THE LESSON BEHIND THE HOURGLASS

Ephesians 5:15-16

“And do this, understanding the present time. The hour has come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.”

Romans 13:11

The silent and continual fall of sand inside an hourglass leads to an obsessive thought: those seconds that have passed will never return.  Who is able to turn back the hands of time?  In the same way, those chronometers that measure hundredths and even thousandths of a second make us dizzy. When we see that rapid course of numbers on a screen, we are made abruptly conscious of the passage of time.

Man has been called to serve his Creator now, in the present. God seeks men and women who are encouraged by the assurance that time is a precious gift. We should not waste it, because it is given to us in order to glorify Him who gives it to us.  We will never be able to recuperate lost time.  Every minute that fades away can never come again.  That is the lesson behind the hourglass.

Today’s reading reminds us that it is wise to take good advantage of time.  The opportunities that God gives us to serve Him will never return.

Time passes.  Let us take advantage of it! Let us wisely use the limited time that God gives us in order to love and serve him.

Prayer: Beloved Father, help me to take good advantage of the time that you give me for honoring and glorifying your Name.

LA LECCIÓN DEL RELOJ DE ARENA

Efesios 5:15-16

“Hagan todo esto, conscientes del tiempo en que vivimos y de que ya es hora de que despertemos del sueño. Porque nuestra salvación está más cerca de nosotros ahora que cuando creímos”

Romanos 13:11

La caída silenciosa y continua de la arena dentro del reloj da lugar a un pensamiento obsesivo: esos segundos que pasan no volverán jamás. ¿Quién puede volver a subir la arena? De igual modo, esos cronómetros que miden el centésimo e incluso el milésimo de un segundo nos dan vértigo. Cuando vemos en una pantalla ese veloz desfile de números, bruscamente tomamos conciencia del paso del tiempo.

El hombre es llamado a servir a su Creador ahora, en el presente. Dios busca hombres y mujeres animados por las certezas de que el tiempo es un precioso regalo. No debemos malgastarlo, pues nos es dado para glorificar a Aquel que nos lo da. Nunca podremos recuperar el tiempo perdido. Cada minuto que se esfuma nunca podrá volver. Esa es la lección del reloj de arena.

La lectura de hoy nos recuerda que es sabio aprovechar bien el tiempo. Las oportunidades que Dios nos da para servirle jamás volverán.

El tiempo pasa ¡aprovechémoslo! Utilicemos bien el tiempo limitado que Dios nos da para amarle y servirle.

Oración: Padre amado, que aprovechar bien el tiempo que tú me regalas y usarlo para honra y gloria de tu Nombre.

STRONG IN WEAKNESS

Exodus 4:1-17

“My power is made perfect in weakness.”

2 Corinthians 12:9

Moses would be classified today as a person with disabilities. In the book of Exodus, the following words proceed from Moses’s mouth: “O Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant.  I am slow of speech and tongue.”  (4:10). Nevertheless, God calls him and turns him into the most outstanding leader of his people.  It seems paradoxical, but this is how the Lord works.

God uses our impediments and disabilities for his own glory.  His manner of leading through them may not be to take them away from us, but rather to give us the strength to use our limitations for good purposes. If our weaknesses cause us to seek God and to lean on Him for support, then in reality they help us instead of being obstacles for our lives. In fact, they end up becoming the best thing that could have happened to us, because our growth in worth, power and happiness depends on our relationship with the Lord and on the degree to which we rely on Him.

Paul pleaded with the Lord three times to remove his impediment, but the Lord answered him: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9). Paul then delighted in his limitations, because he realized that they did not limit him.  As he himself said: “For when I am weak, then I am strong.” (2 Co 12:10), and, in spite of his blindness, he became the greatest missionary in history.

Prayer: Thank you, God of goodness, because in spite of my limitations I can always glorify your name.

FUERTES EN LA DEBILIDAD

Éxodo 4:1-17

“Mi poder se perfecciona en la debilidad”

2 Corintios 12:9

Moisés clasificaría hoy como una persona con discapacidad. En el libro de Éxodo se pone en boca de Moisés estas palabras: “Yo no tengo facilidad de palabra, y esto no es solo de ayer ni de ahora que estás hablando con este siervo tuyo, sino de tiempo atrás. Siempre que hablo, se me traba la lengua” (4:10). No obstante, Dios lo llama y le convierte en el líder más relevante de su pueblo, parece una paradoja, pero así actúa el Señor.

Dios usa nuestros impedimentos y discapacidades para su propia gloria. Su manera de lidiar con ellas puede no ser quitárnosla, sino darnos la fortaleza y usar nuestras limitaciones para bien. Si nuestras debilidades nos hacen buscar a Dios y apoyarnos en Él, en realidad nos ayudan en vez de ser obstáculos para nuestras vidas. De hecho, llegan a ser lo mejor que nos pudo haber sucedido, porque nuestro crecimiento en valor, poder y felicidad, depende de nuestra relación con el Señor y de lo mucho que nos apoyemos en Él.

Tres veces suplicó el apóstol Pablo al Señor que le quitara su impedimento, pero el Señor le contestó: “Con mi gracia tienes más que suficiente, porque mi poder se perfecciona en la debilidad” (2 Co 12:9). Pablo entonces se glorió en sus limitaciones, porque se dio cuenta que las mismas no lo limitaban. Como él mismo dijo: “mi debilidad es mi fuerza” (2 Co 12:10), y a pesar de su ceguera llegó a convertirse en el más grande misionero de la historia.

Oración: Gracias buen Dios, porque a pesar de mis limitaciones puedo siempre glorificar tu nombre.

A TIME OF HOPE

Isaiah 25:6-10a

“I look for your deliverance, O LORD.”

We are in Advent, which is a prelude to the coming of Jesus to our earth.  It is a time of hope.

Within the so-called “small revelation of Isaiah,” we encounter this message about the ultimate good tidings for all peoples, who will be gathered together at a divine feast. Above all else, the prophet is a man with a great capacity for sensing history in the past as well as in the present, but with a definite face towards the future.

Whatever the present situation is for each one of us in any society, there is always hope for a follower of Jesus; a much better future than our present reality always awaits us.  In the Old Testament, that better future is frequently described by the prophets as “a feast of rich food, a feast of the finest of wines”.  The prophet Isaiah adds that this feast will not produce a “hangover,” or cause any ill feeling afterwards, in those who eat and drink abundantly, because it will be celebrated in a stage of history in which “the Lord will wipe away the tears from all faces and He will annihilate death forever”. The Lord is so great that the day will come when, with a great dilation of hearts, some men will say: “This is our God!  This is the Lord we have awaited! We will rejoice and be glad in his salvation!”  Jesus of Nazareth has come to fulfill this sublime and hope-laden task.

Let us be glad and rejoice in the salvation that he brings us because the hand of the Lord will rest upon this earth.

  

Prayer: Lord, guide me on the path that leads toward Bethlehem.

TIEMPO DE ESPERANZA

Isaías 25:6-10a

“¡Tu salvación espero, oh Señor!”

Estamos en Adviento, que preludia la venida de Jesús a nuestra tierra. Es tiempo de esperanza.

Inserto en el llamado “pequeño apocalipsis de Isaías”, nos encontramos con este anuncio sobre la suerte final de todos los pueblos, que serán convocados a un festín divino. El profeta es antes que nada un hombre con una gran capacidad de olfatear la historia tanto en su pasado como en su presente, pero eso sí, de cara al futuro.

Sea la que sea la situación actual de la sociedad, de cada uno de nosotros, siempre hay esperanza para un seguidor de Jesús, siempre nos queda un futuro mucho mejor que nuestra realidad actual. En el Antiguo Testamento, ese futuro mejor, con frecuencia, los profetas lo describen como “un festín de manjares suculentos, un festín de vinos refinados”. El profeta Isaías añade que ese festín no producirá “resaca”, malestar posterior, en los que coman y beban en abundancia, porque se celebrará en un estadio de la historia en el que “el Señor Dios enjugará las lágrimas de todos los rostros y aniquilará la muerte para siempre”.

Tan grande es el Señor, que llegará el día donde con una dilatación enorme del corazón, algunos hombres dirán: “¡Este es nuestro Dios! ¡Éste es el Señor a quien hemos esperado! ¡Nos regocijaremos y nos alegraremos en su salvación!” Esta sublime y esperanzadora tarea la viene a realizar Jesús de Nazaret.

Alegrémonos y gocemos con la salvación que nos trae porque la mano del Señor reposará en este mundo.

Oración: Señor, guíame en el camino que conduce hacia Belén.

“...I was sick and you looked after me… I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.”

“At the age of 35, my life is coming to an end, destroyed by AIDS, that horrible plague. I don’t blame anyone but myself.  For a long time, my desires were like a challenge to God, and I lived according to my every impulse. I wanted to live free of every moral dictate and to satisfy my thirst for pleasure, whatever the cost; in other words, without worrying about the offense toward Christ’s love for me, nor for the decadence of my body and soul, nor for the wounds I caused others…In God’s infinite grace I found the strength to truly acknowledge the harm I had done, and to beg his forgiveness.  In Jesus I also found the strength to live full of hope, waiting for the approaching moment at which my Creator would wipe away all tears from my eyes.

“But it is painful to see where thousands of young people such as yourselves are headed. You are deceived and little by little you are losing every chance of knowing the happiness and joys of a true love.  True love is built on faithfulness and cannot lead toward death.  It is people who kill love by reducing it to a selfish, sick and suicidal pleasure.  You have your life before you, and if you want to build it upon a solid foundation, say yes to God, who is life and who does not lie.

Prayer: Father, I pray for those who are suffering from AIDS.  Free them from marginalization and from rejection.

“...Estuve enfermo, y me visitaron… De cierto les digo que todo lo que hicieron por uno de mis hermanos más pequeños, por mí lo hicieron”

“A los 35 años, se está terminado mi vida destrozada por el SIDA, esa horrible plaga. No culpo a nadie más que a mí mismo. Durante mucho tiempo, mi voluntad fue como un desafío a Dios, una vida según mis impulsos momentáneos.  Quise vivir liberado de toda ley moral y satisfacer mi sed de placer, costase lo que costase; es decir, sin preocuparme por la ofensa hecha al amor de Cristo por mí, ni por la decadencia de mi alma y de mi cuerpo, o por las heridas que le causaba  a los demás… En la gracia infinita de Dios hallé la fuerza para reconocer verdaderamente el mal que había hecho, a fin de pedirle perdón. En Jesús también encontré la fuerza para vivir lleno de esperanza, aguardando el momento cercano en el que mi Creador enjugará toda lágrima de mis ojos.

“Pero me duele ver adonde van miles de jóvenes como ustedes. Son engañados y poco a poco pierden toda posibilidad de conocer las alegrías y el gozo de un verdadero amor. El verdadero amor se construye en la fidelidad y no puede conducir a la muerte. Son los hombres quienes matan el amor reduciéndolo un place egoísta, efímero y suicida. Tú que tienes la vida por delante, que quieres construir sobre una base sólida, dile sí a Dios, quien es la vida y no miente.
