GO FORWARD

EXODUS 14

“But God said to Moses,

Why do you cry out to me?

Tell the Israelites to go forward!”

Exodus 14:15

The people of Israel found themselves at a great crossroads: before them was the Red Sea, and at their backs was Pharaoh’s fearful army seeking to retrieve them at any cost. The people were worried and afraid.  

This feeling paralyzed them, but neither the Pharaoh nor the Red Sea was the principal problem of this nascent nation; their principal problem was their lack of Faith, in not believing in the God who delivered them from Egypt, who promised them a better life. 

When we read this text in today’s world we say: “What little faith these people had”; we attack and judge them, and we forget the fact that on many occasions the Bible serves as a mirror that reflects our own lives and our relationship with God. Today there are many Israelites in our communities who agonize about going forward and believing in the God who delivers us each day from our Egypt.

Prayer:  God of love, we ask you for the strength to continue moving forward. Help us to believe in you, though we may walk through the valley of the shadow of death. Amidst our crises we want to be faithful and take shelter in you. Amen.

El pueblo de Israel se encontraba en una gran encrucijada: tenía enfrente el mar Rojo y a sus espaldas el temible ejército del Faraón dispuestos a regresarlos sin importar las  consecuencias. El pueblo está preocupado y tiene miedo.

Este sentimiento los paraliza, pero ni el Faraón, ni el mar Rojo son los principales problemas de esta nación en formación, su principal problema es la falta de Fe, es no creer en el Dios que los sacó de Egipto, que les prometió una vida mejor.

En el mundo de hoy, cuando leemos este texto decimos: “que poca fe tenía ese pueblo”, arremetemos contra ellos juzgándolos y se nos olvida que la Biblia en muchas ocasiones funciona como un espejo, donde vemos reflejadas nuestra vida y nuestra relación con Dios.

Hoy existen  muchos Israelitas en nuestras comunidades, que les cuesta seguir adelante y confiar el Dios que nos saca cada día de nuestro Egipto.

Oración: Dios de amor, te pedimos que nos des las fuerzas para seguir adelante. Ayúdanos a confiar en ti, aunque andemos en valle de sombra de muerte. Queremos ser fieles y refugiarnos en ti, en medio de nuestras crisis. Amén.

THE KIND OF CHURCH I WANT

ACTS 2:40-47

“And they decided to live as a great family.

And each day the Apostles shared God’s and Jesus’ teachings with them,

and also celebrated communion and prayed together”.  

Acts 2:42

I’d like it if we asked ourselves a question: What kind of church do we want? Perhaps this may seem a little absurd, since after reading this text the great majority of us would respond: I want a community like this one in the Bible story. The passage we are sharing makes an allusion to the first movements after Jesus’ time, or the domestic church as it was also known at that stage. By all appearances everything was happiness, the first Christians were one big family who shared everything.

I invite you to be suspicious and to go beyond what the text says. How is it that everything was perfect when we have the Apostle Paul sending letters to those communities to correct and give counsel about diverse problems: of division, injustice, idolatry? Ultimately, brothers and sisters in Christ, the author of Acts was only concerned with the good that was occurring within those communities. This teaches and invites us to focus on the positive that surrounds us, and to leave off spending our lives harping about the evil.

Prayer:  Father, thank you because we live in community, and because we can enjoy the good it represents. Amen

LA IGLESIA QUE YO QUIERO

HECHOS  2:40-47

“Y decidieron vivir como una gran familia .Y cada día los

apóstoles compartían con ellos las enseñanzas de Dios y de

Jesús, y también celebraban la cena del Señor y oraban juntos.”

Hechos 2:42

Me gustaría que nos hiciéramos una pregunta ¿Cómo es la iglesia que yo quiero? Puede que parezca un poco absurda pues luego de leer este texto la gran mayoría responderíamos: quiero una comunidad como esta de la historia bíblica. El pasaje que estamos compartiendo hace alusión a los primeros movimientos posteriores a Jesús, o la iglesia doméstica como también se le conoce a esta etapa.  Al parecer por lo relatado todo era felicidad , los primeros cristianos eran una gran familia, lo compartían todo.

Les invito a mirar el texto un poco más allá, con sospecha, ¿cómo es que todo era perfecto, cuando tenemos al apóstol Pablo enviándoles cartas a estas comunidades para corregir y aconsejar sobre diversos problemas, de división, de injusticia, de idolatría? En fin hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,  al escritor de los Hechos sólo le importa lo bueno que está pasando dentro de estas comunidades. Esto nos enseña y convida  a fijarnos en lo positivo que pasa a nuestro alrededor y dejar de pasarnos la vida relatando lo malo.

Oración: Padre, gracias porque vivimos en comunidad y porque podemos disfrutar lo bueno que esto representa. Amén.

FAITH AND WORKS

LUKE 10:38-42

“But Jesus answered her, ‘Martha, Martha, why do you worry about such things?

There is something more important.

Mary has chosen it and no one will take it from her’”.

Luke 10:41-42

Human beings have long debated which is the more important: faith or works. And if we are honest, we continue without a consensual reply to this great question. In today’s text we see a Jesus who is exhausted and wishes to withdraw to rest at the house of two of his best friends, Martha and Mary. I invite you to visualize the scene, and we will compare it with that of our present times. Jesus arrives at the house exhausted, with the desire to bathe and to savor a rich luncheon, and there is Martha to take charge of everything. Therefore, we can call her Works. But when it comes to a visitor to our homes, someone always has to be present, attending to the visitor and conversing; but the most important thing is listening to them. Behold Mary, who we can call Faith.  

Brothers and sisters, each of them has their function, and if Martha hadn’t come to Jesus to complain about her sister, perhaps he wouldn’t have scolded her. Jesus knew that the two were important; one served him and the other listened.

Let’s consider that the text has given us the answer to this long standing question. Faith and Works have to go hand in hand like two good sisters.

Prayer:  Father, let us find balance between faith and works, and may we never go to extremes; both are important. Amen.

FE Y OBRAS

LUCAS 10:38-42

“Pero Jesús le contestó: Marta, Marta, ¿Por qué te preocupas

por tantas cosas? Hay algo más importante.

María lo ha elegido, y nadie se lo va a quitar.”

Lucas 10:41-42

Por mucho tiempo lo seres humanos hemos estado debatiendo ¿qué es más importante la fe o las obras?, y siendo sinceros seguimos sin una respuesta consensuada a esta gran pregunta. En el  texto vemos a un Jesús que está agotado y quiere retirarse a descansar a la casa de dos de sus mejores amigas: Marta y María.  Les invito que visualicemos la escena y la comparemos con la de nuestro tiempo: Jesús llega a la casa extenuado, con ganas de darse un baño, de saborear un rico almuerzo y ahí está Marta  para encargarse de todo, por eso podemos llamarla Obras , pero cuando llega una visita a nuestras casas siempre tiene que quedarse alguien con ella atendiéndola dándole conversación, pero lo más importante escuchándola, he ahí María que la podemos llamar Fe.

Hermanos, las dos cumplieron su función y si Marta no le llega a reclamar a Jesús por su hermana quizás este no la habría regañado.  Jesús sabe que las dos fueron importantes,  una lo sirvió y la otra lo escuchó.

Pensemos  que el texto nos dio la respuesta a esta antigua pregunta,  la Fe y las Obras tienen que ir de la mano como dos buenas hermanas.

Oración: Padre, permítenos balancear entre la fe y las obras, que nunca vayamos a los extremos, las dos son importantes. Amén.

IT’S TIME TO ENJOY BEING

THE SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF GOD

1 PETER 1: 3b-4

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light…”

Ephesians 5:8

In a small town there was a man who lived alone in a very poor house. At times his neighbors helped him with a plate of food. At times he received a bit of used clothes or a pair of shoes with fewer holes.

There appeared at his door one day a well-dressed man who said to him, “Your father has died and left you his enormous fortune. We’ve been searching for you for months. Come with us and we will give you all that is your due.”

Now, at the lawyer’s office, the man finds out that he has been rich for six months; nevertheless, he had continued living in misery. Of course, because he had had no idea.

All of us who are sons of God have a Father who bestows upon us the richest and most unimaginable blessings; but we often live in misery, as if we hadn’t heard. 

Wake up! If Jesus is really in your life you are the richest person. Start enjoying it!

Prayer:  Teach us, Lord, to live as inheritors of your glory and to enjoy being your sons and daughters. Amen. .

ya lo conocen, han pasado a la luz. Así que vivan

como corresponde a quienes conocen a Dios”

Efesios 5:8

En un pequeño pueblo vivía un hombre solo, en una casa muy pobre. Sus vecinos lo ayudaban de vez en cuando con un plato de comida. En ocasiones recibía un poco de ropa usada, o un par de zapatos con menos agujeros.

Un día llega a su puerta un señor muy elegante y le dice: “Su padre  ha muerto, y le ha dejado toda su enorme fortuna. Hace meses que lo estábamos buscando. Acompáñenos y le daremos todo lo que es suyo”

Ya en la oficina del abogado, el hombre supo que hacía casi seis meses que era rico; sin embargo, seguía viviendo en su miseria. Claro, él no se había enterado.

Todos los que somos hijos de Dios, tenemos un Padre que nos da las más ricas bendiciones que nunca pudimos imaginar; pero muchas veces vivimos pobremente, como si no nos hubiéramos enterado.

¡Entérate hoy! Si realmente Jesús está en tu vida, eres la persona más rica. ¡Comienza a disfrutarla!

Oración: Enséñanos Señor, a vivir como herederos de tu gloria  y a disfrutar por ser tus hijos e hijas. Amén.

LET US BE LAVISH WITH BLESSINGS!

JAMES 3:1-12

“From the same mouth come blessings and curses.

My brothers, it should not be thus”

James 3:10

These words of James have always seemed wise to me. There has never been a shortage in the community of those people who use their tongue to curse or incite great rancor between their sisters and brothers in faith with jokes or erroneous judgments.

Perhaps we have all sinned by an offensive phrase that has leapt from our mouths (of which we later repent), but we cannot deny that there are specialists in using their tongues to provoke discords, intrigues, and misunderstandings. Those who act this way should carefully read James’s words and take to heart the importance that it has to use our entire body – and even our tongue – to praise and bless the Lord with an authentically Christian testimony.

Reflect. Think carefully before speaking; be serene, humble, reject vainglory, hypocrisy, and leave arrogance aside, and use our tongues to lavish words of blessing, dialogue, peace, and true Christian love.

Prayer:  God of love, we want the wisdom that comes from you. Pardon our errors. Help us to give testimony of you and not to curse our brothers and sisters. Restrain our tongues when we want to judge and speak badly of others. In Jesus’ name, the good and wise Master. Amen.

¡PRODIGUEMOS BENDICIÓN!

SANTIAGO 3:1-12

“De una misma boca proceden bendición y maldición.

Hermanos míos, esto no debe ser así”

Santiago 3:10

Siempre me han parecido muy sabias estas palabras de Santiago. No han faltado en las comunidades aquellas personas que usan su lengua para maldecir o provocar grandes incendios con chismes o juicios erróneos de sus hermanas y hermanos en la fe.

Quizás todos hemos pecado por una frase ofensiva que ha salido de nuestra boca (y de la cual luego nos arrepentimos), pero no podemos negar que hay especialistas en usar su lengua para provocar discordias, intrigas y malentendidos. Quienes actúan así, deberían leer con detenimiento las palabras de Santiago e interiorizar la importancia que tiene usar todo nuestro cuerpo, hasta la lengua, para alabar y bendecir al Señor con un testimonio auténticamente cristiano.

Reflexionemos todos. Pensemos bien antes de hablar, seamos serenos, humildes, dejemos la vanagloria, la hipocresía y la altanería a un lado, y usemos nuestra lengua para prodigar palabras de bendición, diálogo, paz, y verdadero amor cristiano.

Oración: Dios de amor, queremos la sabiduría que viene de ti. Perdona nuestros errores. Ayúdanos a dar testimonio de ti y a no maldecir a nuestros hermanos y hermanas. Refrena nuestra lengua cuando queremos juzgar y hablar mal de los demás. En el nombre de Jesús, Maestro bueno y sabio, amén.

THE BLESSINGS OF HUMAN TOUCH

MARK 1:29-31

“Then he came and took her hand and raised her up,

and the fever left her and she served them.”

Mark 1:31

We live in a world of rapid communications; conversations between friends and couples in a park give way to cellular connections. Visits to friends are exchanged for emails, and so it goes with human relations; each time we turn around they seem colder and more distant because of technology. And it’s not that we want to turn back time; rapid communications reduce distances when we have far flung relatives and friends. But in many texts, the Bible highlights the importance of personal contact, the touch of blessing; and this is one of those passages in which a touch, a taking of the hand, makes a difference and creates life, health, and friendships…

Peter’s mother-in-law is in bed with fever. The Master didn’t doubt it. He approached, took her hand and raised her. The woman is healed immediately.

The invitation is that we reflect on the infinite possibilities we need to embrace, to take the hand of our loved ones and our friends, to visit and bring health to a home in need of it. Without doubt, the new generations have a very big challenge. I imagine how difficult it must be to leave behind the computer screen or cell phone to visit a sick person, embrace and raise a person in crisis, take them by the hand and smile at those we love. But it’s worth it to separate ourselves at times from those “appliances” and enjoy the blessings of human touch…

Prayer:  Thank you, Jesus, for teaching us the power and blessing of touching to heal and restore people through an embrace or handshake. Help us to share this blessing with those who need us.

LA BENDICIÓN DE LOS TOQUES

MARCOS 1:29-31

“Entonces él se acercó, y la tomó de la mano y la levantó; e inmediatamente le dejó la fiebre, y ella les servía”

Marcos  1:31

Vivimos en un mundo de comunicaciones rápidas, las conversaciones de amigos y parejas en un parque ceden espacio a las conexiones con teléfonos móviles, las visitas a los amigos son cambiados por correos electrónicos, y así sucede con las relaciones humanas, cada vez se vuelven más frías y distantes por causa de la tecnología. Y no es que quiera negar el desarrollo, las comunicaciones rápidas acortan distancias cuando tenemos familiares y amigos lejos, pero la Biblia resalta en muchos textos la importancia del contacto personal, el toque de bendición y este es uno de esos pasajes en los que un toque, un tomar de la mano, hace la diferencia y genera vida, sanidad, afectos…

La suegra de Pedro  estaba acostada con fiebre. El Maestro no lo dudó, se acercó, tomó su mano y la levantó. Al momento esta mujer sanó.

La invitación es a que reflexionemos en las infinitas posibilidades que tenemos de abrazar, tomar de la mano a nuestros seres queridos, a nuestros amigos, visitar y llevar sanidad a un hogar que la necesite. Sin dudas, las nuevas generaciones tienen un reto muy grande. Imagino lo difícil que debe ser salir detrás de la pantalla de computadoras o teléfonos móviles para visitar a un enfermo, abrazar y levantar a un amigo en crisis, tomar de la mano y sonreírle a quien amamos. Pero vale la pena separarnos por un rato de estos “aparaticos” y disfrutar la bendición de los toques...

Oración: Gracias Jesús, por enseñarnos el poder y la bendición de tocar para sanar y restaurar a las personas a través de un abrazo o  un apretón de manos. Ayúdanos a compartir esta bendición con quienes nos necesiten. Amén.
