MIRACLE IN RAMA

1 Samuel 1:24-28

“The Lord kills and brings to life;

He brings down to Sheol and raises up.”

1 Samuel 2:6

Hannah’s faith and generosity are the prototype of Mary’s, who gives her son to the service of the Father, even without entirely understanding the meaning of her gesture.

In her prayer Hannah had asked the LORD to remember her, to not forget her, to give her a son (1:11). On finally achieving her desire of maternity, the sacred author considers that God “has remembered” Hannah. And then comes the moment to complete what Hannah has promised: to consecrate him to the LORD. It might seem illogical to give him up after having obtained and so wanted a son.

After having weaned him, Hannah parts with Samuel; and Samuel must never know any home other than the house of the LORD in Shiloh.  

On putting herself totally in the hands of God, and by trusting him, Hannah’s piety and generosity dazzles with internal light, even though life had treated her severely. God takes time in his own measure, but never fails.

Samuel’s arrival was delayed, like all great things in life, but God fulfilled Hannah’s petition.

Prayer:  Lord, like Hannah I wait to find favor before your eyes.

La fe y el desprendimiento de Ana son el prototipo de los de María que entrega a su hijo al servicio del Padre, aun sin comprender demasiado el significado de su gesto.

En su oración, Ana había pedido a Yahvé que se acordase de ella, que no la olvidase, que le concediera un hijo (1,11). Al realizarse finalmente su deseo de maternidad, el autor sagrado considera que Dios “se ha acordado” de Ana. Entonces viene el momento de cumplir lo que Ana había prometido: consagrarlo a Yahvé. Puede parecer ilógico que, tras desear tanto un hijo, cuando lo ha obtenido se desprenda de él.

Ana se desprende de Samuel al destetarlo. Samuel no debió de conocer ningún otro hogar que la casa de Yahvé en Siló.

Deslumbra con luz propia la piedad y la generosidad de Ana que se pone totalmente en manos de Dios y que confía en él aunque la vida le trate con severidad. Dios se toma sus tiempos, pero no falla.

La llegada de Samuel se hizo esperar, como las cosas grandes de la vida, pero Dios cumplió con la petición de Ana.

Oración: Señor, espero, como Ana, que encuentre favor delante de tus ojos.

FROM THE ORDINARY TO THE EXTRAORDINARY

Luke 1:39-45

“I was in the spirit on the Lord’s day,

and I heard behind me a loud voice”

Revelation 1:10

There are just a few days left before Christmas. The tale of Mary’s visit to her relative Elisabeth strikes us as an ordinary and customary thing, because, what is there extraordinary about two women greeting one another, who aren’t among those we pretentiously call “prominent figures?” Nevertheless, in some way we would say that it has to do with the first encounter between Jesus and John the Baptist. Except that they were in the wombs of two pregnant women at the time.

God is acting from within the bodies of these two women, inviting us to observe how divine power transforms them. Elizabeth understands that God is doing great things in Mary. The inconsequential youth from Nazareth is, in reality, the most important woman in world history. Her presence elicits joy and gaiety. Mary is great because she has believed, because she has totally surrendered herself to God when He called her. Mary knew in whom she trusted, and that He would fulfill everything He promised her.

God is also acting within each of us, transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary. Trust Him.

Prayer:  Lord, I ask that you send Him whom you must, to transform my life and to realize extraordinary things in me.

Lucas 1:39-45

Faltan pocos días para celebrar la Navidad. El relato de la visita de María a su parienta Elisabet pasaría como un hecho ordinario o costumbrista, pues ¿qué de extraordinario tiene que dos mujeres, que no son de esas que pretenciosamente llamamos “personalidades”, se saluden? Sin embargo, de alguna manera diríamos que se trata del primer encuentro entre Jesús y Juan el Bautista, solo que a través de los vientres de dos mujeres embarazadas.

Dios está actuando desde dentro de los cuerpos de estas mujeres, y todo nos invita a observar cómo la fuerza divina las transforma. Elisabet comprende que Dios está haciendo cosas grandes en María. La joven insignificante de Nazaret es, en realidad, la mujer más importante de la Historia. Su presencia hace saltar de alegría y de entusiasmo. María es grande porque ha creído, porque se ha entregado totalmente a Dios que la ha llamado. María ha sabido en quién confiar, y todo lo que Dios le ha prometido se cumplirá.

También Dios está actuando en cada uno de nosotros, transformando lo ordinario en extraordinario. Confía en Él.

Oración: Señor, te suplico que envíes al que has de enviar, para que transforme mi vida y haga en mí cosas extraordinarias.

 they did not believe in him.

All women know that we chat about everything at the hairdresser’s. I was a witness to a conversation that particularly caught my attention. The chatter on that occasion was about the violence in the world today, and the hairdresser said, “When I think about all the crimes, rapes, murders and wars, I say to myself:  There is no God, because if there were, none of this would happen.”

Among the group there was a woman who remained mute during all the comments the hairdresser made. But, it seems, it was too much for her, and she replied, “Ok, if we all thought that, then we’d say that hairdressers and hair salons don’t exist in the world.”

To which the hairdresser responded, “Hmm. I don’t think so. So who am I then?” 

 “Look, if hairdressers existed, there wouldn’t be women in the world without hairdos.”

The hairdresser, already a bit hot under the collar, said to her, “Of course we hairdressers exist.  It’s just something that some people prefer to ignore us.” 

“The same thing happens when some turn their backs to God and don’t want to believe in Him,” the woman said, causing the other to stop and reflect.

The testimonies we accredit to Jesus are: his works, his miracles, and the witness of John the Baptist who presented Jesus as the Messiah, the Savior, and the words of the Gospel referring to him, which we all should know.

Prayer:  Lord, in your presence help me to find a reason for joy in my soul.

CONVERSACIÓN EN LA PELUQUERIA

Todas las mujeres sabemos que en las peluquerías se conversa sobre todo. Fui testigo de una conversación que llamó particularmente mi atención. Se hablaba en aquella oportunidad sobre la violencia en el mundo actual y una peluquera dijo: —“Cuando pienso en todos los crímenes, violaciones, atentados, guerras, me digo: no hay Dios, porque si lo hubiera, no ocurriría todo esto”.

En el grupo había una mujer la cual se había mantenido callada ante todos los comentarios que había hecho aquella peluquera. Pero, al parecer, no pudo aguantarse y le respondió: —“Bueno, si pensáramos así diríamos que en el mundo no existen peluqueras ni peluquerías”.

A lo cual la peluquera respondió: —“Ah no, ¿y qué soy yo entonces?” —“Mire, si las peluqueras existiesen, no habría en el mundo mujeres sin arreglarse su pelo,” dijo la mujer.

La peluquera, ya un poco molesta, le dijo: —“Claro que las peluqueras existimos, lo que algunas prefieren ignorarnos”. —“Lo mismo ocurre con algunos que le dan la espalda a Dios y no quieren creer en Él”, dijo la mujer, y así la calló.

A Jesús, los testimonios que lo acreditan son: sus obras, sus milagros; el testimonio de Juan Bautista, que lo presenta como Mesías, como Salvador; y las palabras de la Escritura, que se refieren a El, y que todos debieran conocer.

Oración: Señor, ayúdame a encontrar en tu presencia un motivo de gozo para mi alma.

THE IDEAL CAPTAIN

Mark 4:35-41

“¡Rouse yourself! Why do you sleep, O Lord,

Awake, do not cast us off forever.”

Accustomed to fishing in the Sea of Galilee, Jesus’ disciples were true professionals who were aware of all the hazards of that place surrounded by mountains. For those men, crossing to the other side was no problem. Jesus could count on their experience and rest easy after the trials of the day.

The Lord took his place in the rear of the boat as a passenger, and not as its captain, until the moment when the furious gathering seas obliged them to wake their Master.

Doesn’t the same thing happen to us as well when we rely on our experience to resolve the situations before us? By his grace the Lord allows things to happen in ways we had not foreseen, and we have no other recourse than to ask for his assistance. When it comes to raising our children, for example, when they’re still small one believes oneself to be a good teacher, but when they reach adolescence there are conflicts, and then we find ourselves obligated to ask the Lord for his help.

Let us invite Jesus to be the captain of our boat, not just a simple passenger.

Prayer:  Oh Lord, let me always think of you as captain, in command of my life.

EL CAPITÁN IDÓNEO

Acostumbrados a pescar en el lago de Genesaret, los discípulos de Jesús eran verdaderos profesionales que conocían todas las trampas de ese lugar rodeado de montañas. Pasar al otro lado no suponía un problema para esos hombres. Jesús podía contar con los conocimientos de ellos y descansar tranquilo después del cansancio del día.

El Señor se instaló al fondo del barco como un pasajero y no como su capitán, hasta el momento en que los elementos enfurecidos los obligaron a despertar a su Maestro.

¿No nos sucede a nosotros también que contamos con nuestra experiencia para enfrentarnos a las situaciones que se nos presentan? En su gracia, el Señor permite que las cosas no sucedan como habíamos previsto, entonces no nos queda otra salida que pedirle socorro. En cuanto a la educación de los hijos, por ejemplo, cuando todavía son pequeños, uno se cree buen educador; pero en la adolescencia a menudo hay conflictos y entonces nos vemos obligados a pedirle ayuda al Señor.

Tomemos a Jesús en nuestra barca como nuestro capitán y no como un simple pasajero.

Oración: Oh Señor, permíteme tenerte siempre como capitán, al mando de mi vida.

THE LIGHT OF HUMANITY

John 1:1-5

“Your Word is a lamp at my feet,

A light that illuminates my way!”

Psalm 119:105

The lighthouse of Alexandria, the greatest in antiquity, with its 135 meters of height, and classified as one of the Seven Wonders of the World, guided the mariners of this dangerous Egyptian coast for sixteen centuries, and without reference points. To perceive and follow its signals meant to return safely and soundly to port. Many lighthouses in the world played this role on the most diverse shores.

In a figurative sense the lighthouse represents what can guide and illuminate, pointing out the shoals that are never missing in our daily life.  How do we discern them?

“When darkness descends to envelop me, the word of God, like a torch, shows me the way and lights my steps. One of the most practical benefits of the Sacred Scriptures is to guide us in daily proceedings. Blessed is the man who personally embraces the word of God and utilizes it in practice as a lamp at his feet.” These words from a nineteenth century preacher still ring true today.

Perhaps you have the feeling of reeling amidst difficulties. Life’s storms come one after another without any light that guides you. The word of God, the Bible, is a map, a compass, and a lighthouse all in one. In reading it you will discover a living God who saves and comes to those who sincerely seek him to illuminate their life.

Prayer:  Thank you my good God for that guide which is your Word.

LA LUZ DE LA HUMANIDAD

El faro de Alejandría, el mayor de la antigüedad, con sus 135 metros de altura, clasificado entre las siete maravillas del mundo, guió durante dieciséis siglos a los marineros en esa costa egipcia peligrosa y sin puntos de referencia. Percibir sus señales y tenerlas en cuenta significaba regresar sano y salvo al puerto. Muchos faros en el mundo desempeñaron ese papel en las más diversas orillas.

En sentido figurado, el faro designa lo que puede guiar e iluminar, señalar los escollos, los que nunca faltan en nuestra vida diaria. ¿Cómo discernirlos?

“Cuando la oscuridad desciende para rodearme, la palabra de Dios, como una antorcha, me muestra el camino e ilumina mis pasos. Uno de los beneficios más prácticos de las Sagradas Escrituras es guiarnos en las actuaciones cotidianas. Bienaventurado el hombre que se apropia personalmente de la palabra de Dios y la utiliza en la práctica como una lámpara a sus pies”. Estas palabras de un predicador del siglo XIX siguen siendo actuales.

Quizás tú tengas la sensación de tambalear en medio de las dificultades. Las tormentas de la vida vienen unas tras otras sin que haya una luz que lo guíe. La palabra de Dios, la Biblia, es un mapa, una brújula y un faro a la vez. Al leerla descubrirás a un Dios viviente que salva y que viene al encuentro de quienes le buscan con sinceridad para iluminar su vida.

Oración: Gracias mi buen Dios, por esa guía que es tu Palabra.

ONE CANNOT BELIEVE EVERYTHING

Proverbs 14:12-17

“There is a way that seems right to a man,

but its end is the way of death”

Proverbs 16:25

We have all heard of carnivorous plants that, by means of their odor or color, attract insects, snaring them in their corolla and eating them.

This makes us think of all the seductions to which modern man is susceptible, from the radio, television, the press…which promise us success, riches, freedom, and victory, provided that we act according to our desires. Everything seems so beautiful and attractive!

Like a carnivorous plant, Satan lures his victims, offering them a thousand and one things, some more attractive than others. He is the liar, the deceiver and the seducer. Through the maneuvers used by all deceptive vendors, Satan’s objective is to bring the entire world to perdition, leading his victims to eat the poisoned fruits which grow behind the beautiful flowers in which he would have us delight.

Let us flee from Satan’s ruses and put our trust in God, who always tells us the truth.  He will illuminate the passage out of the course we are paving.

Prayer:  Father, may I always keep my gaze steadily on You. Don’t let me fall into the temptation of this bewitching world.

Todos hemos oído hablar de las plantas carnívoras, las cuales por su olor o su color atraen a los insectos, los encierran en su corola y se los comen.

Esto nos hace pensar en todas las seducciones a las cuales la gente moderna está sometida. Desde la radio, la televisión, la prensa… se nos promete éxito, riquezas, libertad, victoria, con tal de que actuemos a nuestro antojo, ¡todo parece tan bello y atractivo!

A imagen de una planta carnívora, Satanás atrae a sus víctimas y les ofrece mil y una cosas, unas más atractivas que otras. Él es el mentiroso, el engañador y el seductor. A través de las maniobras de todos los vendedores de ilusiones, el objetivo de Satanás es conducir al mundo entero a la perdición, llevando a sus víctimas a comer los frutos envenenados que crecen tras las bellas flores que nos hace admirar.

Huyamos de las trampas de Satanás y pongamos nuestra confianza en Dios, quien siempre nos dice la verdad. Él iluminará la salida del camino que empedremos.

Oración: Padre, permíteme mantener la mirada siempre puesta en Ti. No me dejes caer en la tentación de este mundo engañador.

“I watch in hope for the Lord, I wait for God my Savior.”

“Look upon Jesus.   These three single words hold the secret to the Christian life.  Look upon the crucified Jesus in order to find, in the life he gave up for us, our forgiveness and our peace.

Look upon Jesus glorified in order to find in Him the only righteousness that justifies us and allows us to approach God.

Look upon Jesus glorified in order to have Him as a heavenly defender who ceaselessly prays for each of His own.

Look upon Jesus in order to follow Him through faith and to find the strength in His love to triumph over our rebellion and over all attacks of evil and of Satan.

Look upon Jesus so that our darkness will dissipate before the light of His love; so that our joys may be blessed and that we may have peace in our sorrows… so that He will teach us to pray and will respond to our prayers.  Jesus leaves us in the world but He separates us from it, because our lives are hidden with Him in God, and our conduct can thus bear witness to Him before men.

Look to Jesus in the Scriptures in order to learn who He is, what He did, what He gives us and what He asks of us; in order to use Him as role-model, His words as teaching and His promises as sustenance.”

MIRAR A JESUS

Hebreos 12:1-2

“Yo pondré la mirada en el Señor,

y esperaré en el Dios de mi salvación”

“Mirar a Jesús. Son solo tres palabras, pero en ellas está el secreto de la vida cristiana. Mirar a Jesús quien fue crucificado, a fin de hallar, en su vida entregada por  nosotros, nuestro perdón y nuestra paz.

Mirar a Jesús glorificado para encontrar  en  Él la única justicia que nos justifica y permite que nos acerquemos a Dios.

Mirar a Jesús glorificado para tenerlo como el defensor celestial que ora  sin cesar por cada uno de los suyos.

Mirar a Jesús para seguirlo por la fe y encontrar en su amor la fuerza para triunfar sobre nuestra rebeldía y sobre todos los ataques del mal y de Satanás.

Mirar a Jesús para que nuestras tinieblas se disipen ante la claridad de su amor, para que nuestras alegrías sean santas y tengamos tranquilidad en nuestras penas… para que nos enseñe a orar y responda nuestras oraciones. Jesús nos deja en el mundo pero nos separa de él, porque nuestra vida está escondida con Él en Dios, y entonces nuestra conducta puede dar testimonio de Él delante de los hombres.

Mirar a Jesús en la Escritura para aprender quién es, qué hizo, lo que da y lo que pide; para tomarlo como modelo, sus palabras como enseñanza y sus promesas como sostén”
