HONOR THOSE WHO DESERVE TO BE HONORED

PSALM 150

“David told the leaders of the Levites to appoint their brothers as singers to sing joyful songs, accompanied by musical instruments: lyres, harps and cymbals.”

1 Chronicles 15:16

Have you ever thought about the marvelous effect of music on our state of mind?  Music infects us with joy, or brings to mind marvelous memories from the past; music allows us above all else to praise God and to sing of his wonders. Liturgists and musicians have undoubtedly played a very important role in the history of the salvation of the Israelites.

The work done today by those in the ministry of music in our churches also deserves praise.  We invite you to consider the precious time that these people, many of them anonymous, dedicate to the Lord, be it in a worship service or for a special event.  At times these people are responsible for salvaging old hymns, which, without their ministry, would remain forgotten. It is through these new rhythms and melodies that we discover indigenous forms of worshipping God.  Let us thank God for the lives of these people, because they share their gifts and strengthen our faith, bringing new inspiration with new and old hymns.  Let us also uphold their ministries through our prayers, our gratitude, our respect and our participation during the times of praise and worship that they provide.

Prayer: God of music and of rhythms, permit us to recognize the sacrificial work done by those who devote themselves to the ministry of music in our Churches.  Just as you have called these people to serve you, help us to discover our gifts and to share them within our faith communities. Amen.

¿Se han puesto a pensar en el maravilloso efecto de la música en nuestro estado de ánimo?  La música nos contagia de alegría, o nos trae al presente recuerdos maravillosos del pasado, la música nos permite por sobre todas las cosas alabar a Dios y cantar sus maravillas. Sin dudas los liturgistas y músicos jugaron un papel muy importante en la historia de salvación del pueblo de Israel.

También hoy es meritorio el trabajo que hacen algunas personas en el ministerio de la música en nuestras Iglesias. Les invitamos a reflexionar en el tiempo precioso que estas personas, muchas veces anónimas, dedican al Señor ya sea en un culto de adoración o una actividad especial. En ocasiones estas personas son las responsables del rescate de antiguos himnos, que de no ser por su ministerio, quedarían olvidados.  Asimismo nos descubren a través de nuevos ritmos y melodías formas muy autóctonas de alabar a Dios. Agradezcamos a Dios por la vida de estas personas, porque comparten sus dones y fortalecen nuestra fe, trayendo nuevas inspiraciones  con nuevos o antiguos himnos. Sostengamos también sus ministerios con nuestras oraciones, nuestra gratitud, nuestro respeto  y nuestra participación en los espacios de alabanza y adoración que propician.

Oración: Dios de la música y de los ritmos, permítenos reconocer el trabajo sacrificado que hacen las personas que se entregan al ministerio de la música en nuestras Iglesias. Así como has llamado a estas personas a servirte, ayúdanos a descubrir nuestros dones y compartirlos en nuestras comunidades de fe. Amén

MEANINGFULNESS IN LIFE

“There was a man all alone; he had neither son nor brother.  There was no end to his toil, yet his eyes were not content with his wealth. ‘For whom am I toiling’ he asked?”

Ecclesiastes 4:8a

It is true that life demands great effort and hard work.  In these times during which the value of work is in crisis, due as much to the difficult situation of the high cost of living and insufficient salaries as to one’s professional vocation, it may seem somewhat strange for us to focus today’s devotional on the obsession with or addiction to hard work: ‘workaholism’. However, as the popular saying goes, “all extremes are bad,” and even work can turn into an aberration if it lacks moderation.

The case set forth in today’s biblical text is not an isolated case.  You may know people whose obsession with certain forms of work has led them to imbalance or even unhappiness. Our dedication to our work should not displace other dimensions of life of equally great importance.  The Church, the family, healthy forms of recreation…should also be a priority for us. Let us remember that moments of pleasure or rest are not a waste of time, but rather an opportunity to recover our energy, to enjoy the sanctity of rest, sharing our joys and burdens with others, in community, as God invites us to do.  Otherwise our work will turn out to be “vanity” as this wise book of the Bible warns us.

Prayer: God of goodness, help us to learn to value moderation in things so that they never cause us to deprive ourselves of the perspective of commitment and responsibility that you ask of us. Amen.

Sentido para la vida

Eclesiastés 4:1-8

“Un hombre está solo, sin sucesor, sin hijo ni hermano. Nunca cesa de trabajar, sus ojos no se sacian de riquezas, ni se pregunta: ¿Para quién trabajo yo y privo mi vida de todo bienestar?”

Eclesiastés 4:8a

Es cierto que la vida exige de esfuerzo y esfuerzo duro. En tiempos en que el valor del trabajo está en crisis, tanto por la difícil situación de la carestía de la vida y los salarios insuficientes, como por vocación profesional, resulta quizás algo extraño que propongamos hoy meditar acerca de la obsesión, el afán por el trabajo. Es que, como bien dice el refrán popular, “todos los extremos son malos”, y hasta trabajar puede convertirse en una aberración si no se tiene la justa medida.

El caso que expone el texto bíblico hoy no es un caso aislado. Quizás usted conozca personas cuya obsesión con ciertas labores las ha llevado al desequilibrio e incluso la infelicidad. Nuestra dedicación al trabajo no debe desplazar otras dimensiones de la vida que también tienen gran importancia. Espacios como la Iglesia, la familia, el sano divertimento… deben también ser una prioridad para nosotros. Recordemos que los momentos de placer o descanso no son una pérdida de tiempo, sino la oportunidad de recobrar fuerzas, disfrutar de la sacralidad del descanso, compartir con otras personas nuestras alegrías y cargas, en comunidad, tal como Dios nos invita a hacer. De otra manera nuestro trabajo pasará a ser “vanidad” como este sabio libro de la Biblia nos advierte.

Oración: Dios bueno, permítenos aprender a valorar la justa medida de las cosas para que nunca lleguen a privarnos de la perspectiva de compromiso y responsabilidad que tú pides de nosotros. Amén.

A DAY FOR GOD

PSALM 84

“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.”

Luke 6:38a

Upon waking up this morning, as I felt the warmth of my bed and my rested body, I gave thanks to God.  In that moment I thought of all the good things that God may have reserved for me, an undeserved gift as his daughter, at times obedient and thankful, but rebellious and selfish most of the time.

That day I received news of a project in my church in which I could be of help to some of the needy. I had a wonderful day ahead of me.  God was in my heart and I was ready to give of myself. That day I had received a good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over. I am thankful to my God for giving me tasks to do for his glory and honor.

We should not wait for God’s blessings in order to share our service with others, but the gratitude that is felt and the desire that one feels to serve and love when it is crowned with the infinite grace of God, are undeniable.

When we go to the Lord’s temple to praise his name and to perform his work, many are the blessings that are added to our life. 

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for all the blessings and the strengths that you give us so that we can share them with others. Amen.

UN DÍA PARA DIOS

Cuando me desperté en la mañana, al sentir la tibieza de mi cama y mi cuerpo descansado, di gracias a Dios. En ese momento pensé en cuantas cosas buenas podría tener Dios reservadas para mí, un regalo inmerecido como hija suya, en ocasiones dócil y agradecida, pero la mayoría de las veces rebelde y egoísta.

Ese día recibí la noticia de un proyecto en mi Iglesia en el que podía ayudar a algunas personas necesitadas. Una jornada maravillosa se presentaba ante mí. Dios estaba en mi corazón y yo estaba lista para dar. Ese día yo había recibido medida buena, apretada, sacudida y repleta. Gracias le doy a mi Dios por darme tareas para su gloria y honra.

No debemos esperar por las bendiciones de Dios para compartir nuestro servicio con los demás, pero es innegable la gratitud que se siente y las ganas que una tiene de servir y amar cuando es coronada con la gracia infinita de Dios.

Cuando vamos al templo del Señor a alabar su nombre y a trabajar en su obra, muchas son las bendiciones que se añaden a nuestra vida.

Oración: Gracias Señor, por todas las bendiciones y fortalezas que tú nos das para que podamos compartirlas con otros. Amén

FOR GOD’S GLORY ALONE

1 PETER 4: 8-11

“Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.”

  1 Peter 4:10

Surely you have heard that some brothers and sisters will give any excuse in order not to participate in the mission of the Church:  “I am too new to the faith; I still don’t know what my gift is; I am afraid to pray in public; I’m shy…” and many other pretexts that we are used to hearing. There are also people who willingly offer themselves up to serve and who are questioned, by leaders or members with many years in the community, with expressions such as: “You need to give it time; You need to learn first; Each to his own.”  These comments end up provoking insecurity and fear to participate due to the possibility of being criticized.  What is certain is the Lord has crowned each one of us with gifts that cannot be contained, which need to be shared.  The church community should give everyone the opportunity to express themselves and to participate in the construction of the kingdom: some by preaching, others in the ministry of music, others in diaconal tasks, and others through visitation to the sick and elderly, others in fundraising, etc. We certainly need to be clear about the fact that no one ministry is above another.  We should set aside all pride and acknowledge that whatever task we take upon ourselves in the Church we do only for the glory and honor of God, as it is He who enables us and sends us to accomplish it.

Prayer: Father, help us to find a way to serve using the gifts that you have granted us.  Help us to be useful people.  Amen.

SOLO PARA LA GLORIA DE DIOS

1 PEDRO 4: 8-11

“Ponga cada uno al servicio de los demás el don

que haya recibido, y sea un buen administrador

de la gracia de Dios en sus diferentes manifestaciones”

  1 Pedro 4:10

Seguramente has escuchado que algunos hermanos o hermanas brindan cualquier excusa para no participar en la misión de la Iglesia: “Soy demasiado nuevo en la fe, todavía ni sé cuál es mi don, tengo miedo a orar en público, soy tímida… y muchos otros pretextos que solemos escuchar. También se da la situación de personas que brindan su mayor disposición a servir y son cuestionadas, por líderes o por miembros con muchos años en la comunidad, con expresiones como estas: “hay que darle tiempo, tiene que aprender primero, cada uno a lo suyo”. Estos comentarios llegan a provocar inseguridad y miedo a participar por la posibilidad de recibir una crítica. Lo cierto es que a cada uno el Señor coronó con dones que no pueden quedarse encerrados, tenemos que compartirlos. La comunidad debe brindar posibilidad a todos de expresarse y participar en la construcción del reino: unos predicando, otros en el ministerio de la música, otros en tareas de diaconía, otros en la visitación y acompañamiento a los enfermos, otros en la recaudación de fondos, etc. Lo que sí debemos tener bien claro es que ningún ministerio está por encima de otro. Debemos despojarnos de todo orgullo y reconocer que cualquier tarea que desempeñamos en la Iglesia la hacemos sólo para la gloria y honra de Dios, pues es él quien nos capacita y nos envía a desarrollarla.

Oración: Padre, ayúdanos a encontrar la manera de servir con los dones que nos has otorgado. Ayúdanos a ser personas útiles. Amén

Do not deprive the alien or the fatherless of justice, or take the cloak of the widow as a pledge.

Although the ancient laws of Israel protected the most vulnerable sectors of that early society, such as widows and foreigners, nothing stopped exclusion from marking the relationships between human beings, to the point of open marginalization. This is not a reality that was left behind in history.  Today, many human groups are excluded from their rights.  A vivid example is the situation of the dalits in India. The ancient caste system, officially rescinded from today’s laws but still in effect, calls this group the “untouchables” on account of the indignity that has been placed upon them by a certain “divine order”. But the examples of taking what is divine as justification for injustice are not limited to the history of Israel or to current day India.  Oftentimes we find ourselves in privileged positions with respect to others, and the Church becomes an instrument of exclusion with its established rules that are far from translating God’s love toward humanity.  Today is a new day in which we can renew our vision regarding how much we open ourselves to God through our capacity to open ourselves to those around us:  without exclusion, discrimination, complaint, or ridicule.

God is with us in this endeavor, as it is from him that true love flows, which is the true divine order.

Prayer: God of goodness, I wish for you to take over my life in such a way that no space remains within it for exclusion, but rather for the construction of open, frank and harmonious relationships. Amen.

El verdadero orden

A pesar de que las antiguas leyes de Israel protegían a los sectores más vulnerables de aquella incipiente sociedad como las viudas y los extranjeros, nada impidió que la exclusión marcara las relaciones entre los seres humanos hasta el punto de la marginación abierta. Esta no es una realidad que haya quedado atrás en la historia. Hoy día, muchos grupos humanos quedan al margen de sus derechos. Un vivo ejemplo es la situación de los dalits en la India. El antiquísimo sistema de castas, derogado oficialmente por las actuales leyes pero vigente de hecho, nombra a este grupo como “intocables” por razón de la indignidad que ha puesto en ellos un cierto “orden divino”. Pero los ejemplos de tomar lo divino como justificación para la injusticia no se reducen ni a la historia de Israel ni a la actual India. Muchas veces nosotros mismos nos ubicamos en posiciones de privilegio con respecto a los demás, y la Iglesia se convierte en instrumento de exclusión que establece reglas que distan de traducir el amor de Dios a la humanidad. Hoy es un nuevo día en el que podemos renovar nuestra visión acerca de cuánto nos abrimos a Dios a través de nuestra capacidad para abrirnos a quienes nos rodean: sin excluir, ni discriminar, sin murmurar, ni escarnecer.

Dios está con nosotros en tal empeño, pues es de él de donde brota el verdadero amor, que es el verdadero orden divino.

Oración: Dios bueno, quiero permitir que tomes mi vida de tal manera que no quede en ella espacio para excluir sino para construir relaciones abiertas, francas y armoniosas. Amén.

GESTURES OF SOLIDARITY

PROVERBS 16:5-20

“Better a little with righteousness

Than much gain with injustice.”

Proverbs 16:8

Recently during a devotional time a sister in our congregation, one of the most helpful, told us the following story:

A few days ago I left the house early because I had an appointment at the dental clinic.  As I was crossing the threshold, I ran into a man who always comes to visit me in the morning.  He is a very humble man with whom I share a cup of coffee every morning, but since I was in a hurry on that occasion, I didn’t want to go back inside to the kitchen and I tried to dismiss him with the excuse that I didn’t have any of the valuable liquid. After taking a few steps, I heard someone calling me and when I turned around, there stood my neighbor saying to me: look, they gave me two pesos, come back so I can buy you a coffee. I was so moved! Between tears I discovered God’s message:  his poverty was turned into riches through his sharing and my haste was cancelled out by this lesson of solidarity.

This is what happens on occasion: we learn God’s proffered message of love and solidarity through a person from whom we least expect it. Let us be attentive to God’s signs in the voice and gestures of humble people.  Let us have the sensitivity to receive these signs in the midst of our haste and concerns.

Prayer: Lord of time, grant that we may discover your signs in the face of those who are humble. Amen.

GESTOS DE SOLIDARIDAD

PROVERBIOS 16:5-20

“Es mejor lo poco del justo que los muchos frutos del injusto”

Proverbios 16:8

Recientemente en un espacio devocional una hermana de la congregación, de las más serviciales que conozco, contó la siguiente historia:

Hace unos días salí temprano de la casa porque tenía un turno en la clínica dental. Al cruzar el umbral de la puerta tropecé con un señor que siempre me visita en las mañanas. Él es un hombre muy humilde con el que comparto cada mañana una taza de café, pero como estaba apurada en esta ocasión no quise regresar a la cocina y traté de despedirlo con la disculpa de que no tenía el preciado líquido. Al caminar unos pasos, sentí que me llamaban y cuando me voltee allí estaba mi vecino que me dijo: mira, me regalaron dos pesos, ven para comprarte un café. Me emocioné mucho y entre lágrimas descubrí el mensaje de Dios: su pobreza se transformó en la riqueza del compartir y mi prisa fue anulada por esta lección de solidaridad.

Así sucede en ocasiones, de quién menos esperamos aprendemos el mensaje de amor y solidaridad que Dios nos ofrece. Estemos atentos a las señales de Dios en la voz y en los gestos de los humildes. Tengamos la sensibilidad para recibir estas señales en medio de nuestras prisas y ocupaciones.

Oración: Permite Señor del tiempo, que podamos descubrir tus señales en el rostro de los humildes. Amén

CONFRONT YOUR PROBLEMS!

2 TimotHY 1: 3-18

“For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.”

2 Timothy 1:7

Some time ago I read the following story in a book of meditations:  A great teacher had the mission to select a new guardian for the administration of a Zen monastery, as the former one had died.  The great teacher gathered his disciples and said to them:  “I am going to present you with a problem. The first person to solve the problem will be the new guardian of the temple.”  He placed a bench in the center of the room and on top of it he placed an enormous and beautiful porcelain vase with a single beautiful red rose and declared: “This is the problem.”  The disciples perplexedly contemplated the sophisticated and rare designs of the porcelain, the freshness and elegance of the flower…What did they represent?  What was the enigma?  After a few minutes, a student stood up, looked at them all, walked toward the vase and threw it on the floor.  “You are the new guardian,” explained the teacher. “I was very clear; I told you that you were faced with a problem. It does not matter how fascinating they may be; problems must be resolved.  It may be a matter of a rare porcelain vase, of a love that no longer has meaning, of a pathway that we must abandon but that we insist on pursuing because it brings us advantages.  There is only one way to deal with problems: by attacking them full on.”

We ask God today to use the teaching from this illustration to give us the discernment and power to resolve our problems and to not delay in making decisions or allowing ourselves to be misled by appearances.

Prayer: Our God, we wish to entrust our pathway to you, so that you can help us to confront difficult situations with integrity and with your Spirit of power.  Amen.

2 Timoteo 1: 3-18

“porque no nos ha dado Dios espíritu de cobardía,

sino de poder, de amor y de dominio propio”

Leí hace algún tiempo la siguiente historia en un libro de meditaciones: Un gran maestro tenía la misión de seleccionar un nuevo guardián para la administración de un monasterio zen, pues el anterior había fallecido. El gran maestro reunió a sus discípulos y les dijo: “Voy a presentarles un problema —dijo—. Aquel que lo resuelva primero será el nuevo guardián del templo”. Puso en el centro de la sala un banco y sobre éste un enorme y hermoso florero de porcelana con una hermosa rosa roja y señaló: “Este es el problema”. Los discípulos contemplaban perplejos los diseños sofisticados y raros de la porcelana, la frescura y elegancia de la flor... ¿Qué representaba aquello? ¿Cuál era el enigma? Después de algunos minutos, un alumno se levantó, los miró a todos, caminó hacia el florero y lo tiró al suelo. “Usted es el nuevo guardián —explicó el maestro—: Yo fui muy claro, les dije que estaban delante de un problema. No importa qué tan fascinantes sean, los problemas tienen que ser resueltos. Puede tratarse de un raro vaso de porcelana, un amor que ya no tiene sentido, un camino que debemos abandonar pero que insistimos en recorrer porque nos trae comodidades. Sólo existe una forma de lidiar con los problemas: atacarlos de frente”.

Identificados con la enseñanza de esta ilustración pidamos hoy a Dios que nos dé discernimiento y fortaleza para resolver nuestros problemas y que no dilatemos la toma de decisiones dejándonos llevar por apariencias.

Oración: Dios nuestro, queremos encomendar nuestro camino a ti, para que nos ayudes a enfrentarnos a las situaciones difíciles con entereza y con tu Espíritu de poder. Amén
