IN THE BELLY OF THE GREAT FISH

 

JONAH 2:1-10

 

“But the Lord provided a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was inside the fish three days and three nights.”

Jonah 1:17

 

We have known the story of Jonah since childhood.  In spite of being a passage filled with profound teachings, we often approach it only superficially.  Jonah is a prophet who at first refuses to preach the possibility of salvation to those who were oppressing his people.  According to him, surely those godless people were not going to be grateful for nor listen to the message of salvation that God was offering them.  God nevertheless instructs this prophet in various ways.  First, by giving him the possibility to meditate upon the greatness of God and the meaning of his life while he was inside the belly of the great fish, and later, by being a witness to the repentance of the Ninevites, thereby destroying any of his expectations. On many occasions

we are prisoners of Jonah’s arrogance and we try to escape from God’s will by going our own way, thinking  that our criteria are more valid than those of God himself.  And yet, our circumstances lead us to “the belly of the great fish,” situations of desolation and anguish, but which allow us to acknowledge our place and the place of God in our lives.  Unfortunately, our learning processes are often like this: under the pressure of crises.

 

God willing, we should always be obedient to him in order to be attentive to his voice and not to wait to become desperate in order to follow his will or to appeal to his mercy.

 

 

Prayer: Grant that the belly of the big fish be a place for us to reencounter you, to acknowledge your greatness, oh God. Amen.

En el vientre del pez

JONÁS  2:1-10

“Pero Jehová tenía preparado un gran pez que tragase a Jonás; y estuvo Jonás en el vientre del pez tres días y tres noches”

Jonás 1:17

 

La historia de Jonás nos llega desde la niñez. A pesar de ser un pasaje lleno de profundas enseñanzas muchas veces sólo nos acercamos a él superficialmente. Jonás es un profeta que se niega en primera instancia a predicar la posibilidad de la salvación a aquellos que oprimían a su pueblo. Según él, seguramente, aquellos impíos no iban a agradecer, ni atender el mensaje de salvación que Dios les ofrecía. Sin embargo Dios alecciona a este profeta de diferentes maneras. Primero, dándole la posibilidad de meditar acerca de la grandeza de Dios y del sentido de su vida en el vientre de un pez, y luego, siendo testigo del arrepentimiento de los ninivitas, rompiendo así cualquier expectativa suya.

En muchas ocasiones somos presa de la arrogancia de Jonás y pretendemos escapar de la voluntad de Dios tomando nuestro propio camino, pensando que nuestros criterios son más valederos que los del propio Dios. Sin embargo, las circunstancias nos llevan al “vientre del pez”, situaciones de desolación y angustia, pero que nos permiten reconocer nuestro lugar y el lugar de Dios en nuestras vidas. Desafortunadamente así son muchos de nuestros procesos de aprendizaje, bajo la presión de las crisis.

Quiera Dios que seamos siempre obedientes a él para atender a su voz y no esperar la desesperación para seguir su voluntad o apelar a su misericordia.

 

Oración: Que el vientre del pez sea para nosotros lugar de reencuentro contigo, de reconocimiento de tu grandeza, oh Dios. Amén

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

 

“…but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her. ”

Luke 10:42

When I come home tired after work in the afternoon, my four-year-old daughter asks me to sit by her side to play together.  Thousands of excuses come to mind:  I have to make dinner; it’s bath time; I’m exhausted… I nevertheless make myself an espresso for some inspiration and from that moment, a marvelous world begins to emerge, filled with fairies, witches, princesses, castles, and kitchens abundantly provisioned with food to prepare.   And the best time of the day has begun.

 

We occasionally exhaust ourselves doing our chores, without realizing that everything has its time and that the best part of it is when we are experiencing God’s love in the company of our loved ones.  It is in that moment that God infuses us with new nourishments and hopes, through a smile, through games… the marvelous world to which he invites us to be like little children over and over again.

 

Let us devote time to our sons and daughters, making a balance sheet alongside them, learning with their wisdom and let us experience life with a bit more hope and freedom from worry.  This can be the best time, the better choice, and it will not be taken away from us.

 

 

Prayer: Jesus, teacher of the way, we sometimes still act like Martha, troubled and in despair.  Help us to be like Mary, to sit at your feet and receive your good news of freedom.  We want to see you in the face of our daughters and sons.  Grant that we never stop being like little children.  Amen.

 

 

El mejor tiempo

 

Eclesiastés 3: 1-8

 

“Pero sólo una cosa es necesaria y María

ha escogido la buena parte, la cual no le será quitada”

Lucas 10:42

En la tarde cuando llego cansada del trabajo, mi niña de 4 años, me pide que me siente a su lado para jugar juntas. Miles de excusas vienen a mi mente: tengo que preparar la comida, es hora del baño, estoy exhausta… Sin embargo me preparo un cafecito para levantarme el ánimo y allí comienza a emerger un mundo maravilloso de hadas, brujas, princesas, castillos, cocinas con comida abundante para preparar. En fin, comienza el mejor tiempo del día.

En ocasiones nos afanamos con los deberes, sin percatarnos que todo tiene su tiempo y que la mejor parte es aquella en la vivimos el amor de Dios en compañía de nuestros seres queridos. Es en ese momento en que Dios nos infunde nuevos alientos y esperanzas, a través de la sonrisa, los juegos… el mundo maravilloso en el que él nos invita a ser como niños y niñas una y otra vez.

Dediquemos tiempo a nuestros hijos e hijas, hagamos un balance del día junto a ellos, aprendamos con su sabiduría y tomemos la vida con un poco más de esperanza y libres de ansiedad. Este puede ser el mejor tiempo, la mejor parte, que no nos será quitada.

 

Oración: Jesús, maestro del camino, a veces seguimos siendo como Martha, turbadas y desesperadas. Ayúdanos a ser como María, para sentarnos a tus pies y recibir tu buena noticia de liberación. Queremos verte en el rostro de nuestras hijas e hijos. Permite que nunca dejemos de ser como niños. Amén

a place for all men and WOmen

Joel 2:26-32

“I will pour out my Spirit on all your people.  Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.”

Joel 2:28

It is very beautiful to come across a text such as this one in the Bible.  Joel, a prophet who lived during a difficult period of history in Israel, when they were attacked by a plague of locusts that had destroyed their crops, transmits these words of certainty and hope on behalf of God that the people need to continue to move forward.  And when God reveals himself and shows them the delights of his kingdom, he makes it clear that in Him there is a place for all men and women. Men and women, old and young alike would be able to enjoy God’s blessings.

 

This prophet’s proclamation remains a goal for us today.  In a world where we also experience many “plagues” causing worry and anxiety, we must fill ourselves with the faith needed to walk with confidence toward the beautiful promise of abundance of God’s kingdom.  As it was for Joel, this will of course not be an easy task.  Let us nevertheless trust that God reveals himself not only to us personally but also impartially and in relation to those who are around us. In other words, God reveals himself to us in a communal context, a community of justice, peace and fraternity, just as the prophetic words of Joel tell us. Let all of us, men and women alike, go forward together to accomplish whichever may be our given task to plant and grow God’s kingdom among us.

 

 

Prayer: God of goodness, we are nothing if you are not among us.  Grant that we may acknowledge you communally and give us the strength needed to impartially share all of the gifts that you have given us.  Amen.

 

 

Lugar para todos y todas

Joel 2:26-32

“Derramaré mi espíritu sobre la humanidad entera, y los hijos y las hijas de ustedes profetizarán, los ancianos

tendrán sueños, y los jóvenes recibirán visiones”

Joel 2:28

Es muy hermoso encontrarnos en la Biblia con un texto como este. Joel, un profeta que vivió en un difícil período de la historia de Israel, cuando eran azotados por una plaga de langostas que había destrozado sus cosechas, trasmite de parte de Dios las palabras de certeza y esperanza que el pueblo necesitaba para continuar hacia adelante. Y cuando Dios se le revela y muestra cuáles son las delicias de su reino, hace evidente que en él hay lugar para todos y todas. Hombres y mujeres, ancianos y jóvenes sin distinción estarían aptos para disfrutar de las bendiciones de Dios.

Este ideal proclamado por el profeta es aún meta para nosotros hoy. En un contexto en el que también muchas “plagas” levantan zozobra y angustia, nos debemos llenar de la fe necesaria para caminar con confianza  hacia la hermosa promesa de la plenitud del reino de Dios. Claro que como para Joel, esta no será una fácil tarea. Sin embargo confiemos en que Dios se nos muestra no sólo personalmente sino en relación con quienes nos rodean, y esto sin hacer distinción. Es decir, Dios se nos revela en comunidad, una comunidad de justicia, paz y fraternidad, tal y como relata el texto profético de Joel.

Vayamos juntos y juntas a cumplir cada cual nuestra tarea para aportar al crecimiento del reino de Dios entre nosotros.

 

Oración: Dios bueno, nada somos si tú no estás con nosotros. Permítenos reconocerte en comunidad y danos fuerzas para compartir sin distinciones todos los dones de los que tú nos has provisto. Amén.

MATTHEW 25: 31-46

“The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’”

Matthew 25:40

 

wherever you see someone walking alone, perhaps blind, perhaps lost and without a walking cane, draw near to him and walk by his side, give him your light and sing through his mouth.

 

Wherever you see a young man laughing and kissing a young woman beneath the moon, the sun, or in a rainstorm; draw silently near and leave a slice of your own heart beside their lips.

 

Wherever you see a child crying alone or a mother swaying beneath the weight of her children, embrace them with the strength of your arms; give them bread and guard their light.

 

Wherever you see that a whip or a sword is raised, that a prison bolts its doors, that firearms threaten death; draw near to them with an open breast, and lance a tremendous ‘no’ to save the world.

 

Wherever you see that a wall is carefully raised in order to remove the fear from a man’s coldness; draw near and add some bricks heated through the rubbing of your hands.

Prayer: God of love, we want to love the way that you love us.  Give us sensitivity and strength so that we can welcome, serve and heal the pains of our neighbor.  Grant that our eyes may always see beyond appearances and that we may be able to extend our hands in service to others!  Amen.

Donde veas que un joven ríe y besa a una muchacha bajo la luna, el sol o el aguacero; acércate en silencio y deja un trozo del propio corazón junto a sus labios.

Donde veas que un niño llora a solas, o una madre vacila bajo el peso de los hijos, acude con la fuerza de tus brazos; parte su pan y cuida de su lumbre.

Donde veas que el látigo o la espada se levantan, que la prisión redobla sus cerrojos que los fusiles amenazan muerte; acércate y a pecho descubierto, lanza un tremendo no que salve al mundo.

HE GUIDES US ALWAYS

 

PSALM 48:14

“…he will be our guide even to the end.”

Psalm 48:14

 

We need a guide. Sometimes we would give everything we have to be told exactly what we should do and where we should go. We want to do what is right, but we don’t know which of the two roads we should follow.  If only we had a guide!

 

The Lord our God helps us to guide ourselves.  He knows the way and will guide us forward until we peacefully reach the end of our journey. There is no greater infallible counsel than His.  Let us place ourselves absolutely under His command and we will never lose our way.  May He be our God, and we will find that He will be our guide. If we follow his law, we will not lose our way on the right path of life, as long as we first rely on Him for every step we take. 

 

 

Our comfort is that since He is our God for eternity, He will never stop being our guide. He will lead us until we die and then we will be with Him eternally and we will never again depart from Him.  This promise of divine guidance implies security throughout life.

 

 

Prayer:  Lord, we seek your guidance today before we venture out.  Amen.

 

 

ÉL NOS GUÍA POR SIEMPRE

 

SALMO 48:14

“él nos guiará aun más allá de la muerte”

Salmo 48: 14

 

Necesitamos un guía. Algunas veces daríamos todo lo que tenemos para que nos dijera exactamente lo que debemos hacer y a dónde dirigirnos. Queremos hacer lo correcto, pero no sabemos cuál de los dos caminos tenemos que seguir. ¡Si tuviésemos un guía!

El Señor nuestro Dios nos ayuda a servirnos de guía. Él conoce el camino  y nos guiará en adelante hasta que lleguemos en paz al fin de nuestro viaje. Seguramente no deseamos consejo más infalible. Pongámonos absolutamente bajo se mando y nunca perderemos el camino. Que sea Él nuestro Dios y encontraremos que Él será nuestro guía. Si seguimos su ley, no perderemos el camino derecho de la vida, dado que primeramente aprendamos a apoyarnos en Él para cada paso que damos.

Nuestro consuelo es que como este es Dios nuestro eternamente, nunca dejará de ser nuestro guía. Hasta la muerte nos conducirá y después moraremos con Él eternamente y nunca más saldremos fuera para siempre. Esta promesa de dirección  divina implica seguridad durante la vida.

 

Oración: Señor, hoy buscamos tu dirección antes de aventurarnos a salir afuera. Amén.

ANSWER ME WHEN I CRY OUT TO YOU

 

PSALM 102

 

“Turn your ear to me; when I call, answer me quickly.”

Psalm 102:2.

Truthfully, many of my prayers sound like that.  I know how to pray correctly in front of other people: without making any demands of God, without giving deadlines or ultimatums; without hoops to jump through to prove God’s power. But when I am alone with God, I am sometimes more impatient.  Come on, God, answer me right now!

 

A while back I was a student in Villa Clara and there I met a guy, then I returned to Havana and when I went back to the central region after summer vacation, I sadly found out that my “first love” had a girlfriend.  On my way back home I kept hearing sad songs about those broken dreams.  In one of them, a husband finds himself with an old girlfriend and after a brief conversation, she leaves and he goes off with his wife, thanking God that those prayers had not been answered: the ones where he had been certain that his old calling was his destiny. The song’s refrain spoke to me then and still does today:  “At times the greatest gifts from God are our unanswered prayers.”  I would prefer for God to answer quickly, but at times, He has other plans.  And I have to wait.

 

Prayer: Lord, teach us to wait patiently in you, and to always be thankful for your answers, no matter what they are.  Amen.

 

 

 

Día del Ministerio Laico

RESPONDE CUANDO TE LLAMO

 

SALMO 102

 

“Inclina a mí tu oído;

respóndeme pronto cuando te llame.”

Salmo 102:2.

Sinceramente, así son muchas de mis oraciones. Sé cómo orar de la manera correcta delante de otras personas. Sin demandas a Dios, sin poner plazos ni dar un ultimátum; sin aros que atravesar para demostrar el poder de Dios. Pero estando a solas con Dios, a veces soy un poco más impaciente. ¡Vamos, Dios, contesta ahora mismo!

Hace tiempo fui a estudiar a Villa Clara y allí conocí a un muchacho, luego regresé a La Habana y cuando volví de vacaciones otra vez a la región central descubrí con melancolía que mi "primer amor" tenía novia. De regreso a casa una y otra vez escuché canciones tristísimas de esas de sueños rotos.  En una de ellas, un esposo se encuentra con una novia anterior y después de una breve conversación, ella se aleja y él se va con su esposa, agradeciendo a Dios que no contestara aquellas oraciones, en las que él estaba seguro de que aquella vieja llama sería su destino. El estribillo de la canción me habló entonces y todavía lo hace hoy: “A veces los mayores dones de Dios son las oraciones no contestadas”. Prefiero que Dios se dé prisa pero, a veces, Él tiene otros planes. Y tengo que esperar.

Oración: Señor, enséñanos a esperar pacientemente en ti, y agradecer siempre tus respuestas, sean cuales sean. Amén.
