A PEACE THAT BREAKS DOWN BARRIERS

JOHn 20:19-23

On the evening of that first of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”

Jesus had already appeared to Mary Magdalene. His resurrection was still an unknown, but the fact that something extraordinary had taken place was undeniable.  Peter and John had been witnesses to the empty tomb…however there was still some room for doubt: Could Mary Magdalene have lied?  Could the body have been stolen?  But the revelation of God through Jesus covered more and more space all the time and now…now it was bursting into an enclosed space! Enclosed by fear, despair, disbelief… Jesus appears there, not to reproach them for their disloyalty and cowardice, not to give them historical lessons about prophetic resistance.  Jesus appeared in order to give his peace.  I have always thought that what made it favorable for Jesus to arrive in that place, and in that manner, is that the disciples were there together.  They had not forgotten to be in community; they remained together beyond their miseries and their fears.

Today we also need the peace of God that goes beyond our limitations and failures; beyond our stammering and desperation. May it be also the spirit of community, cultivated in the church, within the family and in other spaces, that challenges and motivates us to break the barriers that isolate and separate us from one another.

Prayer: God of peace, grant that we may take this peace to all those around us. Amen.

Una paz que rompe barreras

Juan 20:19-23

La noche de ese mismo día, el primero de la semana,

los discípulos estaban reunidos a puerta cerrada en un lugar, por miedo a los judíos. En eso llegó Jesús, se puso en medio

Y les dijo: “la paz sea con ustedes”

Jesús ya se había aparecido a María Magdalena. La resurrección era aún una incógnita, pero que algo extraordinario había pasado, era innegable. Pedro y Juan habían sido testigos de la tumba vacía… pero aún existía espacio para las dudas: ¿mentirá María Magdalena? ¿Habrán robado el cuerpo? Pero la revelación de Dios a través de Jesús abarcaba cada vez más espacio y ahora…¡ahora irrumpe en un espacio cerrado! Cerrado por el miedo, la desesperanza, el descreimiento… Allí aparece Jesús, no para reprocharles por su infidelidad y cobardía, no para dar lecciones históricas de resistencia profética. Jesús apareció para impartir su paz. Siempre he pensado que algo que propició la llegada de Jesús en aquel lugar, y de tal manera, es que los discípulos estaban allí juntos. No se habían olvidado de ser comunidad, continuaban juntos más allá de sus miserias y miedos.

Hoy necesitamos también la paz de Dios más allá de nuestros límites y caídas; más allá de nuestros cancaneos y desesperaciones. Que sea también el espíritu de comunidad, cultivado en la iglesia, en la familia y otros espacios, el que nos desafíe y nos aliente a romper las barreras que nos aíslan y separan.

Oración: Dios de paz, que podamos llevar esta paz a todos los que nos rodean. Amén.
