KEEPING YOUR WORD
MatTHEW 6:33-37
“Above all, my brothers, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by
anything else. Let your ‘Yes’ be yes,
and your ‘No,’ no, or you will be condemned.”
James 5:12
A short time ago I needed various services in
order to repair our family home. I cannot begin to explain all the running
around and sudden changes I had to make in order to find workers who were
adequate and could then do the needed work in the proper time and manner. One
of the main problems turned out to be the fact that they did not keep their
word, either in the contractual stage or in the fulfillment of the period of
time in which to complete their work.
This is only one example of how difficult it is today to find people who
will keep their word.
As
Christian men and women, we should be people who keep our word. This forms part of our witness. Keeping our word and not trying to get away
with vain or disrespectful swearing should be part of our ethic as new
creatures in Christ.
Jesus
himself, by making his yes, yes and his no, no, suffered the consequences
through scorn and death. Not that
suffering in itself renders salvation; but if, as in Jesus’ case, such
suffering is the coherent result of a way of life, then it engenders life and
life in abundance. May we be recognized
through our truthfulness.
Prayer: God of goodness, help us to be firm in our word, and grant that only
your spirit guide us. Amen.
Ser de palabra
Mateo 6:33-37
“No juréis, ni por el cielo, ni por la tierra, ni por
ningún otro juramento; que vuestro sí sea sí, y vuestro no sea no”
Santiago 5:12
Hace muy poco necesité de varios servicios para
reparar la vivienda de mi familia. No podría explicar todas las peripecias que
tuve que hacer para lograr encontrar los trabajadores adecuados y luego, que
realizaran el trabajo necesario en tiempo y forma. Uno de los principales
problemas resultó el hecho de que no cumplieran con su palabra, ya fuera en
etapa de la contratación, ya fuera en el cumplimiento de los plazos de entrega
de las obras. Esto es solo un ejemplo de lo difícil que resulta hoy día que las
personas cumplan con su palabra.
Como cristianos y cristianas, debemos ser personas de palabra. Esto forma
parte de nuestro testimonio. Cumplir con nuestra palabra y no tratar de
convencer con vanos e irrespetuosos juramentos debe ser parte de nuestra ética
como nuevas criaturas en Cristo.
El propio Jesús, por ser su sí, sí, y su no, no, sufrió las consecuencias
con escarnio y muerte. No es que el sufrimiento en sí contenga salvación; pero
si, como en el caso de Jesús, tal sufrimiento es resultado coherente de un modo
de vida, entonces engendra vida y vida en abundancia. Que seamos personas con
las que se puede contar, que nuestra palabra sea valedera, que seamos
reconocidos por nuestra veracidad.
Oración: Dios bueno, ayúdanos a
ser firmes en nuestra palabra, y que sólo tu espíritu nos guíe. Amén.
