TO SAVE LIFE OR TO KILL ?

Mark 3: 1-6

Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand . “Stand up in front of everyone..

Mark 3:3 NIV

They continue to stalk Jesus. They watch him in the synagogue because it is the Sabbath, because there is a man there with an atrophied hand; if he heals him they will again have a motive to accuse him of violating the Law. Jesus knows all this and the question he asks them, while the man with the withered arm is in front of them, is categorical:

What is permitted on the Sabbath, to do good or to do evil, to save a life or to destroy it?

They remain silent. They knew that if someone did not help a neighbor, he was guilty of the evil that happened to him.

Jesus’ response was not in words but in action: He healed the man. With this he comes to tell them: you are here to lie in wait for me, to kill me. I am here to give life and health to this man.

He healed the man on a Sabbath and it was then that two sides that would never have been allied decided to join together to destroy Jesus. They were the Pharisees (the “religious fundamentalists” of his day) and the Herodians (a Jewish group that supported Herod, and thus the Roman government). This was a combination of cynicism and political opportunism, a common occurrence in today’s world.

We experience “Herodian” people who are vigilant and ready to hate, or “Pharisees” with many “laws” that hinder good practices to serve others. If we are disciples of Jesus, we must respond with healing and good deeds, even if they lead us to the cross.

Prayer: God of Life, we ask you for courage to be witnesses of your Kingdom and discernment to act according to your will. Amen.

¿SALVAR LA VIDA O MATAR?

Marcos 3: 1-6
