TAKE YOUR PLACE

Luke 14: 7-11

For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.

Luke 14: 11(NRSV)

That Sabbath, when Jesus entered the house of one of the leaders of the Pharisees to eat bread, he noted that the guests chose the places of honor to sit, meaning that they considered themselves worthy of those positions. Using a parable, he warns them of what can happen to them for exalting themselves, and suggests that they choose an inferior place hoping to be invited to a better place.

What he is telling them is not merely a standard of social conduct, but a lesson that has special significance as a parable, for a “wedding feast” was a recognized symbol of the Kingdom of God and heavenly bliss in that society. Its meaning is clear: God will exalt the humble and humble the proud.

Jesus is also warning us today when we act that way and think better of ourselves than others.

And even worse, when we act like “a silly goat” and occupy “separate seats” with the certainty that when the “main man” sees us, he will call us to “come closer;” this attitude is deliberately hypocritical and does not reflect the true meaning of his warnings.

How good it is to be invited by the “host!” And better still if we know what is our place.

 

Prayer: Lord, may your example of humility go with us in our journey toward your Reign. Amen.

OCUPA TU LUGAR

Luke 4: 7-11

Todo el que a sí mismo se enaltece será humillado, y el que se humilla será enaltecido.

Aquel sábado, cuando Jesús entró en casa de uno de los principales de los fariseos para comer pan, observó cómo los invitados escogían los lugares de honor para sentarse, es decir que se consideraban merecedores de esos puestos, y les advierte, utilizando una parábola, de lo que les puede suceder por enaltecerse a sí mismos, proponiéndoles ocupar un lugar inferior y esperar ser invitados a un lugar mejor.

Lo que el Señor les dice no es un mero señalamiento de conducta social, sino una lección que tiene significado especial como parábola, pues una “fiesta de bodas” era un símbolo reconocido del Reino de Dios y de la dicha celestial, en aquella sociedad. Su advertencia es clara: Dios exalta a los humildes y humilla a los orgullosos.

También Jesús nos advierte a nosotros hoy, cuando actuamos así, y nos creemos mejores que otras personas.

Y peor aun cuando nos hacemos el “chivo con tontera” y ocupamos “asientos apartados” con la certeza de que así, cuando nos vea el “principal”, nos llamará para “acercarnos”; esta actitud es deliberadamente hipócrita y no refleja el verdadero sentido de sus advertencias.

¡Qué bueno es ser invitado por el “anfitrión” !, y mejor si sabemos cuál es nuestro lugar.

 

Oración: Señor, que tu ejemplo de humildad nos acompañe en nuestro caminar hacia tu Reino. Amén.
