Sunday of Advent
REJOICE!
Zephaniah 3:14-18a
“The LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their
hope in his unfailing love.”
Psalm 147:11
The prophet Zephaniah tells the faithful people of Israel that there is no need to fear, because their savior is a powerful God. The invitation to rejoice is the underlying tone of his words. The reason to rejoice is the coming of God who, having cancelled all condemnation, now lives among the people as Savior: “The Lord, your God, is among you!”
This third Sunday of Advent invites us to
spiritual joyfulness. Announcing that God is coming to live among us, the
prophet declares that this is the reason to rejoice; this is a time of jubilee,
when the difficulties and fears that surround us reach their finality with the
arrival of Jesus Christ. There is no longer the need to fear when God manifests
his love. It is precisely these verses
of Zephaniah that inspire the scene of the Annunciation in Luke: “Rejoice…The Lord is with you…Do not be
afraid…”
God’s indulgent presence should be an incentive
for overcoming discouragement and for continuing with our plans as God’s
people: “On that day they will say to Jerusalem, ‘Do not fear, O Zion; do not
let your hands hang limp. The LORD your God is
with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will
quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.’” (Zephaniah
3:16-17)
Today is the day to be glad and rejoice, because
the Lord is nearer than ever.
Prayer: Today I
offer up the homage of my joy to the divine Host.

Sofonías 3:14-18a
“El Señor se complace en los que le honran,
y en los que confían en su misericordia”
Salmo 147:11
El
profeta Sofonías le dice al pueblo fiel de Israel que no ha de temer, pues su
salvador es un Dios poderoso. La invitación a la alegría da el tono fundamental de sus
palabras. El motivo del gozo es la venida de Dios que, cancelada toda condena,
habita ahora en medio de la ciudad como Salvador: “¡El Señor, tu Dios, está
en medio de ti!”.
Este tercer domingo de Adviento nos invita a la alegría del espíritu. Es tiempo de júbilo, los males y temores que nos
rodean encuentran su fin con la llegada de Jesucristo, el profeta anuncia que
Dios viene para habitar entre nosotros, y ese es el motivo fundamental de
nuestra alegría. No hay por qué temer cuando Dios manifiesta su amor.
Precisamente en este texto de Sofonías se inspirará la escena de la anunciación
en Lucas: “Alégrate... El Señor está contigo... No temas...”.
La
presencia indulgente de Dios debe ser un aliciente para vencer el desaliento y
para continuar con los proyectos como pueblo: “Aquel día se dirá a Jerusalén:
Sión, no tengas miedo, no te dejes vencer del desaliento. El Señor tu Dios está
en medio de ti; él es invencible, él te salvará. Contigo él goza y es feliz, y
de nuevo te hará sentir cómo te ama; y contigo compartirá la alegría de los
días de fiesta.”
Hoy
es tiempo para alegrarse y regocijarse, porque el Señor está más cerca que
nunca.
