PILGRIMAGES TOWARD DIALOGUE

MATTHEW 8:28-34

When he arrived at the other side at the region of the Gadarnenes…

Some time ago we received a Muslim youth in our church. He was excited about sharing his faith experience using a photographic presentation on his pilgrimage to Mecca (the sacred place of Islam). For us it inspired the desire to listen to him and satisfy our doubts concerning this religion. The event took place in an ambience of respectful dialogue. For me it was a marvelous experience of cultural learning. The presentation impressed me because it gave me the possibility of affirming my Christian identity. Furthermore, this exchange made me reflect upon the courage we should have to create empathy and dialogue with those we believe to be different.

On many occasions we need to make an effort to go to the other shore. We throw ourselves into knowing different experiences, we hear about other realities, yet we raise many walls that limit our communication and we remain safely in port, in what we know.

Jesus himself dared to travel through Samaria and to dialogue with a lone woman at a well (John 4: 1-42); he acceded to the request of a Syro-Phoenician woman (Mark 7: 24-30); he recognized that God’s grace was manifested far beyond Israel’s borders (Luke 4: 25-27); and he invited us to be his witnesses, even to the ends of the earth (Acts 1: 6-11). So let’s imitate Jesus and make for the other shore to strengthen and affirm our identity. Let’s make these pilgrimages toward dialogue possible.

Prayer:  Oh our God, give us courage and strength that we may be disposed to crossing to other shores, to know other realities. Grant that we always recognize you as our God of history in our meetings of dialogue. May we be welcoming and hospitable this Advent and always. Amen.

PEREGRINACIONES HACIA EL DIÁLOGO

Cuando llegó a la otra orilla, a la tierra de los gadarenos…

Hace algún tiempo recibimos en nuestra Iglesia a un joven musulmán. A él le animaba compartir su experiencia de fe, a través de una exposición fotográfica sobre su peregrinación a la Meca (lugar sagrado para el Islam). A nosotros nos animó el deseo de escucharle y satisfacer nuestras dudas con respecto a esta religión. El encuentro tuvo lugar en una perspectiva de diálogo respetuoso. Para mí fue una experiencia maravillosa de aprendizaje cultural. El encuentro me marcó, porque me dio la posibilidad de afirmar mi identidad como cristiana. Este intercambio además me hizo reflexionar sobre la valentía que debemos tener para crear empatía y dialogar con los que creemos diferentes. En no pocas ocasiones nos cuesta ir a la otra orilla, es decir, lanzarnos a conocer experiencias diferentes, escuchar acerca de otras realidades. Levantamos muchos muros que limitan nuestra comunicación y nos mantienen en puerto seguro, en lo conocido.  El mismo Jesús se atrevió a pasar por Samaria y a dialogar con una mujer solitaria alrededor de un pozo (Juan 4:1-42), accedió a la demanda de una mujer sirofenicia (Marcos 7:24-30), reconoció que la gracia de Dios se manifestaba más allá de las fronteras de Israel (Lucas 4:25-27) y nos invitó a ser su testigos hasta lo último de la tierra (Hechos 1: 6-11). Imitemos pues a Jesús y lancémonos a la otra orilla,  para crecer y afirmar nuestra identidad. Hagamos posible estas peregrinaciones hacia el diálogo.

Oración: Danos valentía y fuerza, oh Dios nuestro, para disponernos a cruzar otras orillas, a conocer otras realidades. Permite que en nuestros encuentros de diálogo podamos siempre reconocerte como nuestro Dios de la historia. Permite que seamos acogedores y hospitalarios en este adviento y siempre. Amén
