THE JAPANESE BAMBOO

MARK 4:26-29

Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how.

One need not be a farmer to know that a good crop requires good seeds, good fertilizer and constant watering.  Sometimes the farmers become impatient with the seeds that they planted and yell even if only to themselves: “Grow!”

Something very curious occurs with the Japanese bamboo: the seed is planted, you fertilize it and you water it constantly.  In the first few months, nothing happens.  Actually, nothing happens to the seed throughout the first seven years, to the extent that anyone would think that those seeds were no good.  During the seventh year, however, within only six weeks the bamboo plant grows over thirty meters.  Is it possible to think that it took only six weeks for it to grow?  No, it’s more likely that it took seven years to properly develop.  Throughout that time, a complex system of roots was developing that allowed it to sustain its growth.

The same thing happens to us when we demand quick replies from God.  The Japanese bamboo makes us reflect upon and understand that in many instances we will confront situations in which we believe that God is not answering our prayers; that He is silent and that nothing is happening.  In those moments we need to remember that we are growing on the inside and that God is filling us with a great inner strength that will allow us to hold ourselves up in our daily lives.

Prayer: Thank you, Jesus, for your constant presence in our lives.  Thank you for allowing us to grow with your support. Amen.

MARCOS 4:26-29

Duerma y vele, de noche y de día, la semilla brota

y crece sin que él sepa cómo

No hay que ser agricultor para saber que una buena cosecha requiere de buena semilla, buen abono y riego constante. A veces los campesinos se impacientan frente a la semilla que sembraron y gritan  aunque sea para sus adentros: “Crece”

Con el bambú japonés sucede una cosa muy curiosa: se siembra la semilla, la abonas y te ocupas de regarla constantemente. Durante los primeros meses  no sucede nada. En realidad no pasa nada con la semilla durante los primeros siete años, a tal punto que cualquiera creería que esas semillas no sirven. Sin embargo, durante el séptimo año, en sólo seis semanas la planta de bambú crece más de treinta metros. ¿Se pudiera pensar que tardó sólo seis semanas para crecer? No, más bien es que se tomó siete años para desarrollarse como es debido. Durante este tiempo, desarrolló un complejo sistema de raíces que le permitirían sostener su crecimiento.

Eso mismo nos pasa cuando demandamos respuestas rápidas de parte de Dios. El bambú japonés nos hace reflexionar y entender que en muchas ocasiones estaremos frente a situaciones en las que creemos que Dios no contesta nuestras oraciones, que está en silencio y que nada está pasando. En esos momentos tenemos que recordar que estamos creciendo dentro de nosotros y que Dios está llenándonos de una gran fuerza interior que nos permitirá sostenernos en nuestra vida diaria.

Oración: Gracias  Jesús, por tu constante compañía en nuestras vidas. Gracias por permitirnos crecer con tu sostén. Amén.
