A FLOCK, A SHEPHERD

EZEKIEL 34:21-26

I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David,

and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their shepherd. (NRSV)

Ezekiel 34:23

The image of a shepherd often ushers in God’s revelation throughout scripture. For example, in this passage which we have read, the prophet Ezekiel takes the shepherds to task for their bad practices and lack of responsibility in the care of their sheep. However, our Teacher Jesus also gives us these beautiful words: “I am the good shepherd, and the good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

The shepherd can symbolize both loving care and the greatest neglect; it all depends on the context in which the text sets it.

It is like this with us. In our private lives or in our social and ecclesiastic responsibilities, we can respond differently to our roles as “shepherds.” Today, God wants us to be like the loving Jesus who was never stingy with deeds of good will to do good to everyone equally. God does not want us to be like those shepherds mentioned by Ezekiel who were so negligent that God himself had to take the reins of the community in order to foster in it the true and full manifestation of his realm.

Prayer: God, let us be good shepherds. Help us to respond to your call and to all the needs of your kingdom. Let us be aware of the great responsibility that you have placed under our care. Amen.

EZEQUIEL 34:21-26

Voy a hacer que vuelva mi siervo David, y lo pondré como único pastor, y él las cuidará. Él será su pastor.

Ezequiel 34:23

 La imagen del pastor acompaña a la revelación de Dios de muchas maneras en todas las sagradas escrituras. Por ejemplo, este texto que hemos leído del profeta Ezequiel toma a los pastores a de malas prácticas y falta de responsabilidad en el cuidado de sus ovejas. Sin embargo, también nuestro Maestro Jesús, nos regala estas bellas palabras: “Yo soy el buen pastor, y el buen pastor su vida da por las ovejas”.

Es decir, el pastor puede simbolizar tanto el cuidado amoroso como la mayor de las negligencias, todo depende del contexto en el que se ubique el texto citado.

También con nosotros, en nuestras vidas privadas o en nuestras responsabilidades sociales o eclesiales, podemos responder de manera diferente a nuestros roles como “pastores”. Dios quiere que seamos hoy como el amoroso Jesús, que no escatimó en acciones de buena voluntad para hacer el bien a todas las personas por igual. Dios no quiere que seamos como esos pastores mencionados por Ezequiel que son tan negligentes que es el propio Dios quien toma las riendas del pueblo para propiciar en él la verdadera y plena manifestación de su reino.

Oración: Dios, permite que seamos buenos pastores y pastoras, para responder a tu llamado y a las tantas necesidades de tu reino. Permite que seamos conscientes de la gran responsabilidad que has puesto bajo nuestro cuidado. Amén.
