THE PROBLEM WITH RETURNING HOME AGAIN

Matthew 2:19-23

“So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. But…”

I remember that one of the many teachings by Maestro René Castellanos was that “the most important part comes after the word but.” And this could well be applied to this story about the Holy Family’s return to the land of Israel.  Following a brief time during which it seemed that all dangers had passed with Herod’s death, his son had now become a possible continuation of violence and death.  The solution was to go to Galilee. It would be difficult to return to a land as distant and unknown and with as bad a reputation as Galilee. That would nevertheless be the framework in which the Son of God would be raised and educated.

Our returns home are often not what we expected or hoped. In his mercy, however, God accompanies us and enlightens our return pathways and leads us to the right place.  This may occur under criticism or doubt, but it should not hamper our faith in God or our determination to march forward until we have established our home in a safe place. At times our returns are marked by specific failures in our life projects, but even in such cases, we should not be victims of discouragement. If God is with us, who can be against us?

Prayer: God of life, be with us always during our exits and our entrances. Amen.

Lo difícil de los regresos

Mateo 2:19-23

“Entonces José se levantó, tomó al niño y a su madre

y se fue a la tierra de Israel. Pero…”

Recuerdo que una de las tantas enseñanzas del Maestro René Castellanos decía “después del pero es que viene lo más importante”. Y esto bien pudiera aplicarse a esta historia en que la sagrada familia retorna a tierra de Israel. Tras un primer momento en el que parecía que todos los peligros habían terminado con la muerte de Herodes, ahora su hijo se levantaba como posible continuador de la violencia y la muerte. ¿La solución? Ir a Galilea. Sería difícil regresar a una tierra distante y desconocida y de mala reputación como Galilea. Sin embargo aquel sería el escenario en el que crecería y se educaría el Hijo de Dios.

Nuestros retornos muchas veces no son como lo esperábamos o lo soñamos. Sin embargo Dios en su misericordia nos acompaña e ilumina en nuestros caminos de regreso y nos lleva hasta el lugar debido. Esto quizás ocurra bajo las críticas o las dudas, lo que no debe faltar es nuestra confianza en Dios y nuestra resolución de marchar hacia adelante hasta establecer nuestro hogar en lugar seguro. En ocasiones los regresos están marcados por ciertos fracasos en nuestros proyectos de vida, pero ni siquiera en tales casos debemos ser víctimas del desaliento. Si Dios está con nosotros ¿quién contra nosotros?

Oración: Dios de la vida, acompáñanos en nuestras salidas y nuestras entradas siempre. Amén.
