WORTHY OF GOD’S FAVOR
LuKE 7:1-10
“This man deserves to have you do this, because he loves our nation and
has built our synagogue.”
Luke 7:4b, 5
Some of the elderly Jews, persons of excellent reputation
in the community, ask Jesus to heal the servant of a centurion. They make this
request with insistence because the centurion had favored the Israelites with
the construction of a synagogue and even identified with them to the point of
loving them. And yet it is neither his
love for their nation, nor the material benefits that he has brought them,
which Jesus admires about this man. It
is his faith that captures the Teacher’s attention and that makes possible the
miracle of healing his servant. In
Jesus’s time it was difficult to find a man with such compassion for one of his
servants, another admirable trait in this enigmatic character.
Thus, from
this passage we learn that, in the first place, God’s favor is not exclusive of
anyone, and moreover, it is even less partial to specific material attributes.
God looks upon our faith as the main currency for working miracles and for
providing for our wellbeing and happiness.
May we be
capable of sensitivity like that of this centurion. May we have faith like his. May we, like
Jesus, open the source of salvation, the gospel, to others, without considering
a person’s origin or personal history.
Prayer: Lord and God, thank you for giving us the example of Jesus in order to
know how to proceed in our lives. Thank you for being a God who favors without
partiality and who comes to all men and women with love. Amen.
Merecer el favor de Dios
Lucas 7:1-10
“Este hombre merece que le concedas lo que pide,
pues ama a nuestra nación y nos ha construido una
sinagoga”
Lucas 7:4b, 5
Algunos de los ancianos judíos, personas de gran
reputación ante el pueblo, piden a Jesús que sane al siervo de un centurión.
Hacen esta petición con insistencia pues el centurión había favorecido a Israel
con la construcción de una sinagoga y además se identificaba con ellos hasta
amarlos. Sin embargo no es el amor por la nación, ni el beneficio material que
les ha traído lo que admira Jesús de este hombre. Es su fe lo que llama la
atención del Maestro y lo que hace posible el milagro de la sanidad de su siervo.
En tiempos de Jesús era difícil encontrar a un señor que favoreciera de tal
manera a uno de sus siervos, algo también de admirar en este enigmático
personaje. Así, de este pasaje aprendemos que, en primer lugar, el favor de
Dios no hace acepción de personas, y menos se parcializa por ciertos aportes
materiales. Dios cuenta con nuestra fe como principal divisa para obrar
milagros y propiciar el bienestar y la felicidad.
Que como este centurión podamos ser sensibles. Que como él tengamos fe. Que
como Jesús abramos a otros la fuente de la salvación, el evangelio, sin
distinción de origen o historia personal.
Oración: Señor y Dios, gracias por
recibir ejemplo de Jesús para saber cómo proceder en nuestra vida. Gracias
porque tú eres un Dios que favorece sin hacer distinción y llegas a todos y
todas con amor. Amén.
