WHAT DOES GOD EXPECT IN THE NEW YEAR?

EPHESIANS 4:17-32

“Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise…”

Ephesians 5:15

I love the Mafalda stories because they combine good humor, wit, reflection and social criticism. In one of the comic strips Quino, the author of this unique character, shoots us a wise message that makes us stop and think at the start of a new year.  Within it the adults are making plans and predictions for the New Year. Then a friend says to Mafalda: “People are hoping that this year will be better than last year.”

With great wittiness and quite correctly Mafalda replies to her friend: “I’ll bet that, for its part, the New Year is hoping that what will be better are the people.”

The truth is that, alongside the dreams and expectations that we have at the start of something new, we need to reaffirm our commitment to that eternal desire to renew ourselves, to become better people, to allow ourselves to be transformed by God and to get back on the path that Jesus has taught us. Don’t forget that God, as this New Year begins, wants us to become better people.

Prayer:  Thank you, God, for beginnings, for allowing us to arrive at a new year. Help us to do your will and to walk grasping your hand with the constant spirit of renewal and commitment. Amen.

¿QUÉ ESPERA DIOS EN ESTE AÑO?

“Por tanto, ¡cuidado con su manera de vivir!

No vivan ya como necios, sino como sabios”

Efesios 5:15

Las historietas de Mafalda me encantan, porque combinan buen humor, ingenio, reflexión y crítica social.

En una de esas tiras cómicas Quino, autor de este singular personaje, nos lanza un sabio mensaje que nos hace reflexionar al comenzar un nuevo año. En él aparecen personas adultas haciendo planes y augurando nuevas cosas para el año que comienza. Entonces un amigo le dice a Mafalda:

-La gente espera que este año que empieza sea mejor que el anterior.

Mafalda responde a su amigo con gran ocurrencia y mucho de razón:

- Apostaría que, por su parte, este año espera que lo que sea mejor sea la gente.

En verdad, junto con los sueños y expectativas que tejemos alrededor de un nuevo comienzo, necesitamos afirmar compromisos en ese deseo eterno de renovarnos, ser mejores personas, dejarnos transformar por Dios y retomar el camino que Jesús nos ensenó. No olvide que Dios, al comenzar este nuevo año, espera que seamos mejores personas.

Oración:  Gracias Dios de los comienzos, por permitirnos arribar a un nuevo año. Ayúdanos a hacer tu voluntad y a caminar asidos de tu mano con un ánimo constante de renovación y compromiso. Amén
