DO YOU NEED TO CLEAN UP?

Malachi 3:2; Mark 1:1-8

But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears?

            Cleaning is a good thing, refining is also a good thing. In both cases the result is good, but the process can be uncomfortable and even painful. Malachi understands that his message needs to prepare people for a spiritual refinement. Although people surrender to God, they do so only with their mouths, but their actions don’t show that they really love him.

            John the Baptist found himself facing a similar challenge just before Jesus arrived. His message was welcomed by people who desperately wanted to be cleansed. For them, the process was worth the cost. But for those who didn’t feel the need for repentance it was difficult to submit to John’s message. The baptism he offered symbolized a spiritual cleansing, and not everyone thought they needed it. John the Baptist promised that Jesus would come with a baptism of the Holy Spirit. That combined the images of Malachi with the work of the Holy Spirit. A life committed to Jesus Christ is a life submitted to the work of purification and refinement by God’s Spirit. Again, the process is frightening and demands loss. But what one finds is worth much more than what is lost: new life, freedom, strength, joy, peace, love . . . .

 

Prayer: Dear Jesus, cleanse us with your Spirit. Refine us. Remove our sin and pride, and fill us with beauty and integrity. May we thus submit to you. Amen.

¿NECESITAS LIMPIARTE?

Malaquías 3:2; Marcos 1:1-8

¿Quién podrá entonces permanecer en pie? Pues llegará como un fuego, para purificarnos.

            Limpiar es una buena cosa, refinar también es algo bueno. En ambos casos, el resultado es bueno, pero el proceso puede ser incómodo e incluso doloroso. Malaquías reconoce que su mensaje necesita preparar a las personas para un refinamiento espiritual. Si bien las personas se rinden a Dios, lo hacen de boca solamente, pues sus acciones no demuestran que realmente lo amen.

            Juan el Bautista se enfrentó a un desafío similar justo antes de que Jesús viniera. Su mensaje fue bienvenido por personas que deseaban desesperadamente ser limpiadas. Para ellos, el proceso valió la pena. Pero para aquellos que no sentían la necesidad de arrepentimiento, era difí¡cil someterse al mensaje de Juan. El bautismo que él ofrecía simbolizaba una limpieza espiritual, y no todos pensaban que la necesitaban. Juan el Bautista prometió que Jesús vendría con un bautismo del Espíritu Santo. Esto combina las imágenes del mensaje de Malaquías con el trabajo del Espíritu Santo. Una vida comprometida a Jesucristo es una vida sometida a la obra de purificación y refinación del Espíritu de Dios. De nuevo, el proceso es aterrador; requiere pérdida. Pero lo que se encuentra vale mucho más que lo que se pierde: nueva vida, libertad, valor, gozo, paz, amor……

 

Oración: Querido Jesús, límpianos con tu Espíritu, Refínanos. Quita nuestro pecado y vergüenza y llénanos de belleza e integridad. Que podamos así someternos a ti. Amén.
