THE RIGHT THING

1 Samuel 16:1-13

“. . . the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”

1 Samuel 16:7 (NRSV)

            When David was anointed King, it seemed that Israel was moving at last in the right direction. Israel’s first King, Saul, had been a disaster. But David was different! All of Israel soon heard of how David had killed the giant Goliath, and in short order he claimed many other victories. David was not the first or most obvious choice for leadership. No one thought of the young David as King. But there was something about David that few recognized: he saw things from God’s perspective. And God used the ordinary experiences of life to shape David into the sort of King that God desired.

            Looking at the heavens at night, David saw God’s creative hand. When his flocks were attacked by a lion or a bear, he knew it was God’s strength that helped him to struggle against them. And when a gigantic Philistine warrior mocked the God of Israel, David knew that he must fight for God’s honor. There was something ingenuous and unbridled about David’s heart: he knelt before God without concern for the consequences.

            That’s the viewpoint that we need! Often what we desire is not what we need. What we most need is to be people shaped by God’s own heart.

 

Prayer: God, you love us so much! Help us in our striving to be people after your own heart. Amen.

LO CORRECTO

1ra Samuel 16:1-13

La mirada de Dios no es como la mirada del hombre, pues el hombre mira las apariencias, pero Yahveh mira el corazón.

1 Sam 16:7

            Cuando David fue ungido rey, parecía que Israel finalmente se encaminaba en la dirección correcta. El primer rey de Israel, Saul, había sido un desastre. ¡Pero David era diferente! Todos en Israel pronto oyeron como David había matado al gigante Goliat y en poco tiempo tuvo muchas otras victorias. David no fue la primera opción obvia para el liderazgo. Nadie consideró al joven David para ser rey. Pero había algo en David que pocos reconocieron: veía las cosas desde la perspectiva de Dios. Y Dios usó las experiencias ordinarias en la vida de David para moldearlo en la clase de rey que Dios quería.

            Mirando al cielo de la noche, David veía la creación de Dios. Cuando sus rebaños fueron atacados por un león o un oso, sabía que era la fuerza de Dios la que lo ayudó a luchar contra ellos. Y cuando un gigantesco guerrero filisteo se burlaba del Dios de Israel, David sabía que tenía que luchar para la honra de Dios. Había algo ingenuo y desenfrenado en el corazón de David, se postró delante de Dios, sin importarle las consecuencias.

            ¡Esa es la perspectiva que necesitamos! A menudo lo que queremos no es lo que realmente necesitamos. Lo que más necesitamos es ser personas conforme al corazón de Dios.

 

Oración: Dios, ¡tú nos amas tanto! Ayúdanos en la búsqueda de ser personas conforme a tu propio corazón. Amén.
