COME AND SHARE GOD’S TABLE

Malachi 3:7-9

Will anyone rob God? Yet you are robbing me! But you say, “How are we robbing you?” In your tithes and offerings

Malachi 3:8 (NRSV)

            In the Old Testament, giving tithes and offerings to God was not simply money. Gifts offered as a tithe were used for food offerings in the Temple. The people were to eat part of an offering and share it with the Levites and the poor. The tithes and offerings had to do with sharing with God and with others, a form of building relationships and sharing the material blessings from God. 

            In saying to the people to stop robbing the tithes and offerings, God is pleading with them to come and share his table again. Sitting down to eat together won’t make everything right, but it is a good start. It is a simple gesture that shows that God continues to be their Father and they his children. It begins to restore the relationship between the people and the priests and Levites. The people provide the meal, and the priests and Levites teach and represent the presence of God. Sharing with the poor also begins to reestablish justice between those who have enough and those who don’t.

            What could you offer today to build, restore or continue a relationship with God and those around you?

 

Prayer: Heavenly Father, show me today how to build my relationship with you. I want to learn how to give you all of my heart. Amen.

VEN Y COMPARTE LA MESA DE DIOS

Malaquías 3:7-9

Y yo pregunto: ¿Acaso un hombre puede defraudar a Dios? ¡En los diezmos y en las ofrendas me han defraudado!

Mal. 3:8

            En el Antiguo Testamento, dar a Dios los diezmos y las ofrendas no era simplemente dinero. Los regalos traídos como un diezmo se usaban para ofrecer ofrendas de comida en el templo. La gente debía comer parte de una ofrenda y compartirla con los levitas y los pobres. Los diezmos y las ofrendas tenían que ver con compartir con Dios y con los demás, una forma de construir relaciones y compartir las bendiciones materiales de Dios.

            Al decirle a la gente que deje de robarle los diezmos y ofrendas, Dios les está pidiendo que vengan y compartan su mesa de nuevo. Sentarse a comer juntos no configurara todo correctamente, pero es un buen comienzo. Es un gesto simple que indica que Dios sigue siendo su Padre y ellos son sus hijos. Comienza a restaurar la relación entre la gente y los sacerdotes y los levitas. La gente provee la comida, y los sacerdotes y los levitas enseñan y representan la presencia de Dios. Compartir con los pobres tambiéén comienza a restablecer la justicia entre aquellos que tienen suficiente y los que no.

            ¿Qué podría ofrecer hoy para construir, restaurar o continuar una relación con Dios y los demás?

Oración: Padre celestial, muéstrame hoy como construir mi relación contigo. Quiero aprender a darte todo de corazón. Amén.
