DEFEATED

Genesis 32:24-30

Then he said, “Let me go, for the day is breaking.” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go, unless you bless me.”.

Gn. 32:26

           Jacob was defeated, but not overcome. He wanted something in return, a blessing. It was a typical Jacob response: always trying to get something from someone. However, in Jacob’s demand we hear something new to him. He was not used to negotiating from a losing position. Jacob knew there was no hope of getting out of this. After a lifetime of thinking that he had to trust his wits, he was finally forced to acknowledge his limits.  He found himself in the awkward position of having no other options. The only thing he could do was ask for help.

           Have you ever been in that position – crushed by circumstances and with no choice but to cry out to God for help? Recovery groups are full of people who refused to ask for help until their situations made them desperate. Jacob had reached that point.  He knew that he could pray to God, but he still tried to do things his way. This situation was different for Jacob. It was done by a different person who needed a different  name;  Israel,  which means “fighting against God”. Sometimes God must break us before He can raise us up safely. Has God ever done this for you?

 

Prayer: Lord, we know that you are in control of our lives. Help us to fight, but not against you. Amen.

DERROTADO

Genesis 32:24-30

El hombre le dijo: Suéltame, porque ya está amaneciendo. -Si no me bendices no te soltaré –contestó Jacob.

Gn. 32:26

           Jacob fue derrotado, pero no vencido. Quería algo a cambio, una bendición. Respuesta típica de Jacob: siempre tratando de conseguir algo de alguien. Sin embargo, en la demanda de Jacob escuchamos algo nuevo para él. No estaba acostumbrado a negociar desde una posición de derrota. Jacob sabía que no había esperanza de salirse de este problema. Después de toda una vida de pensar que tenía que confiar en su ingenio, finalmente fue obligado a reconocer sus límites. Se encontró en la incómoda posición de no tener más opciones. Lo único que podía hacer era pedir ayuda.

           ¿Alguna vez has estado en esa posición? ¿Aplastado por circunstancias y sin opción, solo en clamar a Dios por ayuda? Los grupos de recuperación están llenos de personas que se negaron a pedir ayuda hasta que sus situaciones le desesperaron. Jacob había llegado a ese punto. Lo sabía antes de que pudiera orar a Dios, pero todavía intentó hacer las cosas a su manera. Esta situación fue diferente para Jacob. Y esto lo hizo una persona diferente que necesitaba un nombre diferente: Israel, el “Dios luchador”. A veces Dios nos tiene que romper antes de que nos pueda levantar seguros. ¿Alguna vez ha hecho Dios esto por ti?

 

Oración: Señor, sabemos que estás en control de nuestras vidas. Ayúdanos a luchar, pero no en tu contra. Amén.
