Pentecost Sunday

FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

Acts 2:1-13

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.

            Pentecost is one of the three great feasts that the Jews celebrate; it is as important as the birth and Resurrection of the Lord. It is also called the Festival of Weeks. It marks fifty days since the Passover and Resurrection. The feast has two important senses: historical and agricultural. Historically it commemorated the promulgation of the Law on Mount Sinai, and its agricultural significance is because at Passover, God is offered the first fruits of the barley harvest.

            The Day of Pentecost is one of the greatest days in the Christian calendar, because on that day the Holy Spirit came to the Church in a special way.

            According to the gospel tradition, the feast of Pentecost updates three major events: the sending of the Holy Spirit among the disciples, the birth of the Church, and the beginning of mission work in the world.

            On Pentecost, all were filled with the Holy Spirit. Today, we are filled with the Holy Spirit to the extent in which we are willing to let the Spirit of God work in our lives. The filling of the Spirit in Christians’ lives can also take place in new and special ways. The ways in which the Spirit is revealed in God’s children are infinite. The Holy Spirit always offers new abilities for our working, healing and serving.

 

Prayer: Lord, we give you unending thanks for your Spirit’s renewal and transformation of our lives. Amen.

Domingo de Pentecostés

LLENOS DEL ESPIRITU SANTO.

Hechos 2:1-13

Al llegar el día de Pentecostés, estaban todos reunidos en un mismo lugar.

Hch. 2:1

            Pentecostés es una de las tres fiestas principales que los judíos celebraban; y es tan importante como el Nacimiento y la Resurrección del Señor. También se le llamaba fiesta de las semanas. Se celebraba cincuenta días después de la Pascua de Resurrección. Esta fiesta tenía dos significados: histórico y agrícola. Históricamente conmemoraba la promulgación de la ley en el monte Sinaí y su significado agricultural es porque en la Pascua se ofrecía a Dios los primeros frutos de la cosecha de la cebada.

            El día de Pentecostés es uno de los días más grandes de la Iglesia cristiana, porque ese día el Espí¡ritu Santo vino a la Iglesia de una manera especial.

            Según la tradición evangélica la fiesta del Pentecostés actualiza tres sucesos de capital importancia: el envío del Espíritu Santo sobre los discípulos, el nacimiento de la Iglesia y el comienzo de la acción misionera en el mundo. En Pentecostés todos fueron llenos del Espííritu Santo. Hoy los hijos e hijas de Dios son llenos del Espíritu en la medida en que dejamos que el Espíritu de Dios obre en nuestras vidas.

            La llenura del Espíritu en la vida de los cristianos puede darse también de formas nuevas y especiales. Infinitas son las maneras en que el Espíritu se revela en los hijos e hijas de Dios. El Espíritu Santo ofrece siempre capacidades nuevas para obrar, sanar y servir.

 

Oración: Señor, infinitas gracias te damos porque tu Espíritu renueva y transforma nuestras vidas. Amén.
