FIGHTING

Genesis 32:30-32

So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, “It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.  (NIV)

            Why did God fight with Jacob? Couldn’t he simply have spoken to him? 

            One cannot fight with someone one doesn’t know. Unless one is very familiar with them, wrestling can create an awkward situation. It requires contact with the other person. Maybe that gives us an idea of why God wrestled with Jacob. Wrestling usually doesn’t make you feel good, after all, you are fighting and not hugging.

            When God fights with us, we are likely to see it more as a struggle then a comforting hug. In a way, we all have to fight with God. He doesn’t change us at a distance. As with Jacob, God comes close enough to break us, and then make us whole. As fighters we are forced to take comfort and strength in calling God “Father,” the God who remains close at all times or situations, and who expects our complete surrender for spiritual growth.

 

Prayer: Father God, help us to see that, despite fighting with you is painful, you have our good in mind. Amen.

LUCHANDO

Genesis 32:30-32

Y Jacob llamó a aquel lugar Peniel, porque dijo: He visto a Dios cara a cara, y sin embargo todavía estoy vivo.

            ¿Por qué luchó Dios con Jacob? ¿No pudo simplemente haber hablado con él?

            No se puede luchar con cualquiera que no conoces. A menos que estés muy familiarizado con alguien, la lucha libre puede crear una situación incómoda.  Requiere contacto con la otra persona. Tal vez eso nos da una idea de por qué Dios luchó con Jacob. La lucha libre por lo general no te hace sentir bien. Después de todo, estás luchando, no abrazando. Cuando Dios lucha con nosotros, estamos propensos a verlo más como una lucha que como un abrazo reconfortante. En cierto modo, todos tenemos que luchar con Dios. No nos cambia a la distancia. Al igual que con Jacob, Dios se acerca lo suficiente para quebrarnos, y luego hacernos enteros.

            Como luchadores nos vemos obligados a tomar consuelo y fortaleza en llamar a Dios “Padre”. El Dios que permanece cerca en todo tiempo o situación y que espera de nosotros, rendición total para un crecimiento espiritual.

 

Oración: Padre Dios, ayúdanos a ver que a pesar de que luchar contigo es doloroso, tienes nuestro bien en mente. Amén.
