Mother’s Day

LAWS CONCERNING PRAYER

John 15:11-17

…and so that whatever you ask in my name, the Father will give you.  (NIV)

John15:16c

            If we think superficially, this text sounds as if a Christian could ask for whatever he wants, and receive it; but the New Testament establishes certain laws concerning prayer.

a) Prayer must be done in faith (James 5:15). God does not promise to answer when prayer is nothing more than a formality, a routine repetition of things that are not felt. There is no point in asking God to change us if we do not believe that it is possible to change.           

b) Prayer must be done in the name of Christ. We cannot ask for things that we know Jesus does not approve of, let alone do it on his behalf. Whenever we try to turn prayer into something that enables us to realize our ambitions and satisfy our desires, it must necessarily be ineffective, because it is not prayer.

c) Prayer should always include: “Thy will be done.” When we pray, we must begin by realizing that we never know more than God.

d) Prayer should never be selfish. Jesus said that if two people agreed to ask for something in his name, it would be granted (Matthew 18:19). No one should pray exclusively for his own needs and preferences.

            The temptation that can assail us when we pray is to have absolutely no one in mind but ourselves. We can, and should, bring everything to God in prayer; but, when we have done so, we must accept the answer that God sends us in his perfect wisdom and his perfect love.

 

Prayer: Lord, teach us to pray properly. Amen.

LEYES SOBRE LA ORACIÓN

Juan 15:11-17

Para que todo lo que pidiereis al Padre en mi nombre, él os lo dé.

Jn.15:16c

            Si pensamos superficialmente, este texto suena como si el cristiano pudiera pedir lo que le diera la gana, y recibirlo, pero el Nuevo Testamento establece ciertas leyes sobre la oración.

a) La oración tiene que hacerse con fe (Santiago 5:15). Dios no se compromete a contestar cuando la oración no es más que un formulismo, una repetición rutinaria de cosas que no se sienten. No tiene sentido pedirle a Dios que nos cambie si no creemos que es posible cambiar.

b) La oración tiene que hacerse en el nombre de Cristo. No podemos pedir cosas que sabemos que Jesús no aprueba y menos hacerlo en su nombre. Siempre que tratemos de convertir la oración en algo que nos permita realizar nuestras ambiciones y satisfacer nuestros deseos, tiene que ser ineficaz por fuerza, porque no es oración.

c) La oración debe incluir siempre: «Hágase Tu voluntad.» Cuando oramos debemos empezar por darnos cuenta de que nunca sabemos más que Dios. 

d) La oración nunca debe ser egoísta.  Jesús dijo que si dos personas estuvieran de acuerdo en pedir algo en Su nombre, se les concedería (Mateo 18:19). Nadie debe orar pensando exclusivamente en sus propias necesidades y preferencias. La tentación que nos puede asaltar cuando oramos es no tener en cuenta absolutamente a nadie más que a nosotros mismos.

            Podemos y debemos llevarle todo a Dios en oración; pero, cuando lo hayamos hecho, debemos aceptar la respuesta que Dios nos envíe en Su perfecta sabiduría y perfecto amor.

 

Oración: Señor, enséñanos a orar como conviene.  Amén.
