THE CHURCH AND ITS MISSION IN THE WORLD

John 17: 11-19

I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one.

John 17:15 (NRSV)

            Jesus didn’t ask God to take his disciples out of the world. He did not ask that they have the possibility of evasion, but that they might achieve victory. The type of “Christianity” that takes refuge in convents or monasteries would not have seemed Christian to Jesus. The type of Christianity that identifies itself with no more than prayer and meditation and the life withdrawn from the world would have seemed a version of faith tragically truncated from the one he came to give us. He insisted that it is in the midst of the twists and turns of life that the Christian life must be lived. Certainly, prayer and meditation are necessary, as is retiring behind closed doors to be alone with God; however, those things are not the goal of life, but rather means to reach the goal, which is nothing less than demonstrating the Christian life in the heart of the troubles and trials of life in this world.

            Christianity does not propose to withdraw anyone from life but to equip us to live it better. It doesn’t offer us freedom from problems, but rather the ability to resolve them. It doesn’t offer us a simple peace, but a victorious throng. However and truly the Christian is not of this world, it is true that we are in the world where we must live our Christianity.

 

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for your care and protection. We ask you that we may faithfully carry out our mission in the world. Amen.

LA IGLESIA Y SU MISIÓN EN EL MUNDO.

Juan 17: 11-19

No ruego que los quites del mundo, sino que los guardes del mal.

Jn. 17:15

            Jesús no le pidió a Dios que sacara a Sus discípulos del mundo. El no pidió para ellos una posibilidad de evasión, sino que alcanzaran la victoria. La clase de «cristianismo» que se refugia en conventos o monasterios no le habría parecido cristianismo a Jesús. La clase de cristianismo que no se identifica nada más que con la oración y la meditación y la vida retirada del mundo le habría parecido una versión trágicamente truncada de la fe que vino a traernos. Él insistía en que era en medio de las vueltas y revueltas de la vida donde se tenía que vivir el cristianismo. Por supuesto que se necesita orar y meditar y retirarse a puerta cerrada para estar a solas con Dios; pero estas cosas no son el fin de la vida, sino medios para alcanzar el fin, que no es otro que demostrar la vida cristiana en los trabajos y las pruebas de la vida del mundo.

            El cristianismo no se propone retirar a nadie de la vida, sino equiparle para vivirla mejor. No nos ofrece librarnos de problemas, sino capacitarnos para resolverlos. No nos ofrece una paz fácil, sino una milicia victoriosa. Con todo y ser indudable que el cristiano no es del mundo, es verdad que es en el mundo donde tiene que vivir su cristianismo.

 

Oración: Señor, gracias por tu cuidado y protección. Te pedimos que podamos cumplir fielmente nuestra misión en el mundo. Amén.
