RESOLUTE FOLLOWERS

Luke 9: 57-62

“No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

            Church leaders know that it is much easier to start a new “ministry” than to sustain one for a long period of time. At the beginning there is a lot of enthusiasm, but it requires determination to maintain and complete a project.

            On his journey to Jerusalem, Jesus ran into a man who spontaneously said, “Lord, I want to follow you wherever you go.” But the man didn’t know where Jesus was going or what he would be involved in. Speaking of himself as the “Son of Man” Jesus said that following him would bring many difficulties. Then Jesus said to another man, “Follow me.” But the man began with excuses saying that he first had to bury his father (and other members of the family) at the very least until his mother died. If the father had already died, the man would have been in mourning and not in the great crowd of the curious around Jesus that day. Then, in response to another man, Jesus indicated that he could not turn back in service to Him.

            Jesus taught that in order to follow him one needs a complete commitment. He is our example. Knowing what awaited him, he left and kept faith until the end. To serve him, much more is needed than good intentions.

 

Prayer: Beloved Lord, we are thankful that you have called us to follow you. Help us to learn what that means and to be faithful to the end, no matter what. In your name, Amen.

Lucas 9: 57-62

            Los líderes de las iglesias saben que es más fácil comenzar un nuevo “ministerio” que sostener uno durante un largo periodo de tiempo. Al comenzar hay mucho entusiasmo, pero se necesita determinación para mantener y terminar un proyecto.

            En su camino a Jerusalén Jesús se encontró con un hombre quien dijo espontáneamente: “Señor, deseo seguirte a dondequiera que vayas.” Pero el hombre no sabía a dónde Jesús se dirigía ni en que estaríía involucrado. Hablando de sí mismo como “el Hijo del Hombre”, Jesús dijo que seguirlo traería muchas dificultades. Entonces Jesús dijo a otro hombre: “Sígueme.” Pero el hombre empezó con excusas, diciendo que primero tenía que enterrar a su padre. Eso significa cuidar de su padre enfermo (y de otros miembros de la familia) por lo menos hasta que el padre muriera. Si el padre ya había muerto, el hombre hubiera estado de luto y no unido a la gran multitud de curiosos en torno a Jesús ese día. Luego, en su respuesta a otro hombre, Jesús indicó que no se puede volver atrás en el servicio a Él.

            Jesús enseñó que para seguirlo se requiere un compromiso total. Él es nuestro ejemplo. Sabiendo lo que le esperaba, salió y se mantuvo fiel hasta el final. Para servirlo, hace falta mucho más que buenas intenciones.

 

Oración: Querido Señor, estamos agradecidos de que nos llamas a seguirte. Ayúdanos a entender lo que eso significa y ser fiel hasta el final, no importa qué. En tu nombre, amén.
