BETWEEN THE SWORD AND THE WALL

Jeremiah 20:7-11

 

On every side, the Lord’s messenger protects those who honor God; and he delivers them.

In one of his short stories, Edgar Allan Poe, an American storyteller, describes a room with walls closing in. In the center of the room is a well. It opens its jaws for the victim to fall hopelessly to the bottom when he no longer has an inch of floor to stand on. But some friends arrive in time to save him, and get the walls moving in the opposite direction. The chief of the rescuers runs in and grabs the victim's arm, just in time to prevent his death.

Our reality is like that room of the writer's fantasy; because it oppresses us and narrows our lives, with intentions to force us to fall into the pit of despair. The prophet Jeremiah experienced such situations. He faced persecution, was subjected to intrigue and slander, was imprisoned, and declared to deserve death.

The sons and daughters of God go through situations that may seem like an insult or a mockery because we hope that nothing bad will happen to us.  However, the reality is quite different. That is when we must learn to jump our wall of obstacles and difficulties to serve God always.

 

Prayer: Lord do not allow our problems or sufferings to bend our Christian character. Teach us to obey your call and serve with commitment and enthusiasm. Amen.

ENTRE LA ESPADA Y LA PARED.

Jeremías 20:7-11

El ángel del Señor está cerca de los que le temen, y los libera de sus peligros.

Sal. 34:7

           En uno de sus cuentos, Edgar Allan Poe, cuentista norteamericano, describe un cuarto cuyas paredes se van estrechando cada vez más. En el centro hay un pozo que abre sus fauces esperando que la pobre víctima, cuando ya no le quede ni una pulgada de piso del cual agarrarse, caiga sin remedio hasta el fondo. Pero unos amigos llegan a tiempo para salvarlo, y logran que las paredes se muevan en dirección opuesta. El jefe de los salvadores entra corriendo, y toma del brazo a la víctima, apenas a tiempo para evitar su muerte.

Nuestra realidad es semejante a aquel cuarto de la fantasía del escritor; porque nos oprime y estrecha la vida, con intenciones de obligarnos a caer en el pozo de la desesperación. El profeta Jeremías vivió situaciones límites. Enfrentó la persecución, fue objeto de intrigas y calumnias, estuvo preso y fue declarado como merecedor de la muerte.

           Los hijos e hijas de Dios atravesamos situaciones similares que pueden parecernos un insulto o una burla, porque esperamos que nada malo nos va a suceder; sin embargo, la realidad es bien diferente. Es ahí donde debemos aprender a saltar nuestra pared de obstáculos y dificultades para poder servir a Dios en todo tiempo.

 

Oración: Señor no permitas que nuestros problemas o sufrimientos dobleguen nuestro carácter cristiano. Enséñanos a obedecer tu llamado y a servir con compromiso y entusiasmo. Amén.
