GREATER THAN JONAH

Luke 11:29-32

The people of Nineveh . . . repented at the proclamation of Jonah, and see, something greater than Jonah is here!

            People love to see amazing things. The miraculous signs of Jesus, such as healing the sick and casting out demons, astonished everyone. Crowds gather when impressive things occur. But Jesus did not use miracles to entertain people.

            In Jesus’ era, miraculous signs were understood as proof of a true prophet. And Jesus used them to show the people that the Kingdom of Heaven was present among them, in himself. The purpose of the miracles was to help people believe in him. That is what they really needed: to believe in him as Savior. But if they weren’t willing to believe, more miracles wouldn’t have helped. In effect, Jesus told them that they could wait until they received the “sign of Jonah.” That refers to Jonah having been “buried” for three days in the belly of a whale. So also, Jesus would be buried in the “belly” of the earth after dying on a cross. (Matt. 12:39-40) Then he would rise and leave his tomb as the risen Savior.

            Jesus was frustrated by the expectations of the crowd and their lack of faith. How have we responded to Jesus? Do we believe in him and serve him faithfully?

           

Prayer: Beloved Jesus, give us the power to live in a pleasant way while we learn about You. Amen.

MAYOR QUE JONÁS

Lucas 11:29-32

Porque los de Nínive se volvieron a Cristo cuando oyeron el mensaje de Jonás, y lo que hay aquí es mayor que Jonás.

            A la gente le encanta ver cosas increíbles. Los signos milagrosos de Jesús, tales como sanar a los enfermos y expulsar demonios, asombraron a todos. Las multitudes llegan cuando suceden cosas impresionantes. Pero Jesús no usó los milagros para el entretenimiento de la gente.

            En tiempos de Jesús, los signos milagrosos fueron entendidos como una prueba de que alguien era un verdadero profeta. Y Jesús los usa para mostrar a la gente que el reino de los cielos estaba presente entre ellos, en éél mismo. El propósito de los milagros era ayudar a la gente a creer en Él. Eso es lo que realmente necesitaban: creer en Él cómo Salvador. Pero si no estaban dispuestos a creer, milagros adicionales no ayudarían. En efecto, Jesús dijo que podían esperar hasta que se les diera “la señal de Jonás.” Esto se refiere a que Jonás fue “enterrado” durante tres días en el vientre de un pez. Así también, Jesús sería enterrado en las entrañas de la tierra, después de morir en una cruz (Mateo 12: 39-40) Entonces se levantaría y saldría de su tumba, como el Salvador resucitado.

            Jesús se sintió frustrado con las expectativas de la gente y la falta de fe. ¿Cómo hemos respondido nosotros a Jesús? ¿Creemos en él y le servimos fielmente?

 

Oración: Querido Jesús, danos el poder para vivir de una manera agradable mientras aprendemos de Ti. Amén.
