A RESOLUTE JESUS

Luke 9: 51-56

When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem.

            Perhaps you have heard the expression, “Resolutions were made to be broken.” Have you made a resolution lately? If so, how did it turn out? Some people decide to lose weight, or to be pleasant, or be more faithful in reading the Bible. But it is difficult to keep resolutions.

            Today’s reading tells us that Jesus “courageously undertook his journey to Jerusalem.” It wasn’t just any resolution, for he was aware of the suffering and death on the cross that awaited  him. He had to die in our place in order to pay for our sins, and he was determined to fulfill his mission, With a firm resolve he carried out the will of his Father, even if it meant rejection and death.

            Jesus also confronted rejection all along his path. Because he was on his way to Jerusalem, there was no welcome for him in a Samaritan town. A rejection based on national identity! The disciples reacted as we might have done, but Jesus reprimanded their desire for vengeance. He came to redeem, not to destroy: “For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost.” (Luke 19:10) Then he continued to Jerusalem to fulfill his purpose.

 

Prayer: Jesus, thank you for being willing to go to Jerusalem to pay the price for our salvation. Help us to follow you wherever that may be, no matter the cost. In the power of the Spirit, Amen.

UN JESÚS RESUELTO.

Lucas 9: 51-56

Cuando ya se acercaba el tiempo en que Jesús había de subir al cielo, emprendió con valor su viaje a Jerusalén.

            Tal vez has escuchado el refrán “Las resoluciones fueron hechas para ser rotas” ¿Hiciste alguna resolución últimamente? Si es así, ¿Cómo te ha ido? Algunas personas deciden perder peso, o ser amables, o más constantes en la lectura de la Biblia. Pero es difícil mantener las resoluciones.

            La lectura de hoy nos dice que Jesús “emprendió con valor su viaje a Jerusalén”. No era una resolución cualquiera, pues era consciente del sufrimiento y la muerte en la cruz que le esperaba. Tenía que morir en nuestro lugar para pagar por nuestros pecados, y estaba decidido a cumplir su misión. Con firmeza resolvió cumplir la voluntad de su Padre, incluso si eso significaba rechazo y muerte.

            Jesús también enfrentó rechazo a lo largo del camino. Debido a que se dirigía a Jerusalén, no le dieron la bienvenida en un pueblo samaritano. ¡Un rechazo basado en identidad nacional! Los discípulos reaccionaron como nosotros podríamos haberlo hecho, pero Jesús reprendió su deseo de venganza. Vino a redimir, no a destruir: “Pues el Hijo del hombre ha venido a buscar y salvar lo que se había perdido” (Lucas 19:10). Entonces continuó hacia Jerusalén para cumplir su propósito.

 

Oración: Jesús, gracias por tu voluntad de ir a Jerusalén a pagar el precio para salvarnos. Ayúdanos a seguirte donde quiera que sea, no importa el precio. En el poder de tu Espíritu. Amén.
