THE LIVING GOD

1 Kings 18:30-39

“The Lord indeed is God; the Lord indeed is God.”

1 Kings 18:39b (NRSV)

            In examining the accomplishment of the final miracle in this passage, we must not overlook the preparation at its onset. This renewal of devotion and sincere dedication had to precede the bold affirmation that brought God’s action. Perhaps we can’t feel the power of God in our lives because our own place of communion is covered with the evil weeds of negligence.

            What a joy to contemplate the prophet’s magnificent confidence. His faith in the All Powerful allowed him to go to extremes in his demonstration. The trench filled with water flowing from the saturated wood and the wet meat are an eloquent demonstration of his belief that nothing is too difficult for God. In contrast to the frenetic dancing and the frenzied shouting of the prophets of Baal, we see the confident prayer of Elijah. The odds against him mean nothing to him. He knows the reality of God. He trusts the constant nature of God’s character to prove his faith.

            The dramatic conclusion is for our benefit. The existence and sovereignty of God do not depend on his response with fire. But, yes, he responds. We can count on God’s faithfulness to respond to our weak expressions of faith. It is this happy combination which leads to a successful conclusion of our weak efforts: the willingness to expose ourselves against the odds for Christ, and an unmoveable faith in God’s power.

 

Prayer: Father, thank you for your faithfulness in every moment of our lives. Amen.

EL DIOS VIVIENTE

1 Reyes 18:30-39

            Al examinar la realización del milagro final de este pasaje, no podemos pasar por alto la preparación en su comienzo. Esta renovación de devoción y sincera dedicación tiene que anteceder a la audaz afirmación que trae luego la acción de Dios. Quizás no podemos sentir el poder de Dios en nuestras vidas porque nuestro propio lugar de comunión está cubierto con las malas hierbas de la negligencia.

            ¡Qué gozo contemplar la magnífica confianza del profeta! Su fe en el Todopoderoso le permite ir al extremo en su demostración. La zarza llena de agua que corría de la madera saturada y la carne también mojada son una respuesta elocuente de su creencia de que nada es demasiado difícil para Dios. En contraste con las danzas frenéticas y los gritos enloquecidos de los profetas de Baal,  vemos la oración confiada de Elías. Las posibilidades en su contra no significan nada para él. Él conoce la realidad de Dios. Él confía en la constancia del carácter de Dios para probar su fe.

            La conclusión dramática es para beneficio nuestro. La existencia y soberanía de Dios no dependían de su contestación con fuego. Pero sí contestó. Podemos contar con la fidelidad de Dios para responder a nuestros débiles esfuerzos de fe. Es esta feliz combinación la que lleva a conclusión exitosa nuestros esfuerzos: la disposición de exponernos con las posibilidades en contra por Cristo, y una fe inconmovible en el poder de Dios.

 

Oración: Gracias Padre, por tu fidelidad a cada momento de nuestras vidas. Amén.
