A CHURCH SLOWLY DYING

Revelation 3:14-22

I know your works.  You are neither cold nor hot.  So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I’m about to spit you out of my mouth.

Revelation 3:15-16

            Alfred Steiglitz founded a center for young amateur artists in New York. On one occasion he said to one of his visitors: “What we do here is for the soul of the artist, if it does not help the artist to overcome the outer obstacles, then this institution has no reason to exist.”

            The church in Laodicea found itself in a similar situation.  A deep apathy and indifference totally consumed them.  It seemed the problems of this church were related to those things they paid attention to on a daily basis.

Actually, the same thing occurs with some people and some churches.  Outwardly they seem to be fine and their religious service has good indicators-- they seem to be good Christians; they help regularly in the church, they give offerings, they are friendly with everyone.  Nevertheless, inside they are totally empty, discouraged, and indifferent. God does not accept a church that is slowly dying, without hope for the future or in danger of disappearing.  As sons and daughters of God we should be dressed on the inside with the joy, strength and victory of Christ.

 

Prayer: Lord, thank you because You nourish our lives spiritually.  Free us from apathy or indifference.  May we never drown in the monotony or in empty formulas but let our communion with you be nourished and on fire for the glory of God.  Amen.

UNA IGLESIA QUE MUERE LENTAMENTE

Apocalipsis 3:14-22

Conozco tu conducta: no eres ni frío ni caliente. ¡Ojalá fueras frío o caliente!  Ahora bien, puesto que eres tibio, y no frío ni caliente, voy a vomitarte de mi boca.

Apoc. 3:15-16

            Alfredo Stiglitz fundó en Nueva York un centro para jóvenes artistas aficionados. En cierta ocasión este decía a uno de sus visitantes: “Si lo que hacemos aquí por el alma del artista, no le ayuda a vencer los obstáculos del exterior, no tiene esta institución razón de existir”.

            La iglesia de Laodicea se encontraba en una situación similar. Una profunda apatía e indiferencia les consumía totalmente. Al parecer los problemas de esta iglesia estaban relacionados con aquellas cosas en las que cotidianamente ponían su atención.

Actualmente ocurre lo mismo con algunas personas e iglesias. Exteriormente parecen estar bien y en cuanto a su servicio religioso tienen buenos indicadores; parecen ser buenos cristianos; asisten sistemáticamente a la iglesia, ofrendan, son amables con todos; sin embargo, por dentro están totalmente vacíos, desanimados e indiferentes. Dios no acepta a una iglesia que muere lentamente, sin esperanza de futuro o con peligro a desaparecer. Como hijos e hijas de Dios debemos ser revestidos interiormente de Cristo con gozo, fuerza y victoria.

 

Oración: Señor, gracias porque Tú nutres espiritualmente nuestras vidas. Líbranos de la apatía o la indiferencia. Que nunca nos hundamos en la monotonía o en formulas vacías, sino que nuestra comunión contigo sea nutrida y ardiente para la gloria de Dios. Amén.
