DISSIPATING SHADOWS OF UNBELIEF

John 20:19-31

Because you have seen me you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed. (NIV)

John: 20:29

            Bishop Augustine of Hippo, who was a great theologian of the early church, expressed, “Who then are you, the God we adore? You are the most hidden in our life, and yet the most present among us, the most beautiful, and at the same time the strongest, the most constant. But we still can’t understand you.”

            On the night of the resurrection day the disciples were hiding inside a house. On the most joyous, great and victorious day in the history of the world the followers of Jesus were in fear, hidden because of the persecution of the Jewish leaders. They were not only afraid, but they were full of doubts as well. A vivid example of this is the disciple Thomas, who is recognized as the unbeliever. He needed to see to believe; he was the only disciple who was not there when Jesus visited them after he was raised.

            This behavior does not escape our own reality. Our disbelief allows us to question all kinds of situations, people, things and moments, that affect our lives and those of our neighbor. As humans we too are full of fears, uncertainties, worries, anxieties and afflictions. God allows us to experience difficult situations to grow in faith and bear witness to the God whom we worship and serve.

 

Prayer: Lord Jesus, we are thankful because even with our fears and doubts, you always believe in us. Thank you because, although we may have sunny or cloudy days, your permanent presence is in our lives. Amen.

DISIPANDO SOMBRAS DE INCREDULIDAD

Juan 20:19-31

«Porque me has visto has creído. Dichosos los que no han visto y han creído.»

Jn. 20:29

            El Obispo Agustín de Hipona, quien fuera un gran teólogo de la Iglesia Primitiva expresó: ¿Quién pues eres tú, el Dios a quien adoramos? Tú eres el más oculto de nuestra vida y sin embargo el más presente entre nosotros, el más hermoso y al mismo tiempo el más fuerte; el más constante, pero aún no podemos comprenderte.

            La noche del día de Resurrección los discípulos estaban escondidos en el interior de una casa. El día más gozoso, grandioso y victorioso de la historia del mundo los seguidores de Jesús estaban temerosos, escondidos por la persecución de los lííderes judíos. Ellos no solo tenían miedo, sino que estaban llenos de dudas. Un vivo ejemplo de ello es el discípulo Tomas, quién es reconocido como el incrédulo. El necesitó ver para creer; fue el único discípulo que no estaba cuando Jesús les visitó después de haber resucitado.

            Este comportamiento no escapa a nuestra propia realidad. Nuestra incredulidad nos permite cuestionar todo tipo de situaciones, personas, cosas, momentos, que afectan nuestra vida y la del prójimo. Humanamente también nosotros estamos llenos de temores, incertidumbres, preocupaciones, afanes y aflicciones. Dios permite que vivamos situaciones difíciles para crecer en la fe y dar testimonio del Dios a quien adoramos y servimos.

 

Oración: Señor Jesús, estamos agradecidos porque aún con nuestros temores y dudas, Tú siempre crees en nosotros. Gracias, porque, aunque tengamos días soleados o con nubes, tu permanente presencia está en nuestras vidas. Amén.
