WITNESSES IN EMMAUS

Luke 24:35-48

You are witnesses of these things.

            The Christian faith, centered on the resurrection, is profoundly realistic. Even after his resurrection, Jesus continued to be human, not a fantasy.

            The traveler from Emmaus, after an authoritative teaching about the Messiah, presented himself to them in a familiar manner, the breaking of bread. Contrary to his words and his optimistic manner, the disciples remained sad, disconsolate, discouraged. Jesus’ appearance didn’t give them security, didn’t relieve their doubts, because they were incapable of recognizing him. The Lord showed them two permanent signs of his presence. The first sign was a fraternal meal as an expression of friendship and an occasion to communicate the message; the second was openness to the Word of God to help their comprehension understand the Scriptures.

            The great lesson that Jesus gave to his disciples, and also to us, is that He is present to us as the center of Scripture. After Him everything will be a consequence of His death and resurrection, of His life and message. Jesus’ invitation to us, his disciples, is simple: when we recognize the Lord, we must make ourselves available to Him immediately and have complete confidence in Jesus.

 

Prayer: Lord, let us be genuine witnesses to you. May we never lose the perspective of finding you and knowing you through the Scriptures. Amen.

TESTIGOS EN EMAÚS

Lucas 24:35-48

Vosotros sois testigos de estas cosas.

Lc. 24; 48

            La fe cristiana, centrada en la resurrección, es profundamente realista. Jesús, aún después de resucitado, sigue siendo un ser humano, no es un fantasma.

            Aquel caminante de Emaús, después de una autorizada enseñanza sobre el Mesías, se les ha presentado de un modo familiar: en el partir el pan. Contrariamente a sus palabras y su manera optimista, los discípulos seguían tristes, desconsolados, desanimados. La aparición de Jesús no les da seguridad, ni les quita las dudas, pues son incapaces de reconocerle. El Señor les muestra dos señales permanentes de su presencia. La primera señal es una comida fraternal como expresión de amistad y ocasión para comunicar el mensaje; la segunda es la apertura para la Palabra de Dios; abrirles el entendimiento para que comprendieran las Escrituras.

            La gran lección que Jesús le dio a sus discípulos y también a nosotros es que Él se nos presenta como el centro de las Escrituras. Tras El todo será consecuencia de su muerte y de su resurrección, de su vida y de su mensaje. La invitación de Jesús a nosotros sus seguidores es sencilla: cuando reconocemos al Señor, debemos ponernos al momento a su disposición y tener total confianza en Jesús.

Oración: Señor, permítenos ser genuinos testigos tuyos. Que nunca perdamos la perspectiva de hallarte y conocerte a través de las Escrituras. Amén
