LOVING TRULY

John 13:34-35

Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another.

1 John 4:11 (NRSV)

            There are two ways it is possible to join things; one by freezing, and the other by fusion, by heat. What we Christians need is to be united by fraternal love.

            Jesus’ commandement to love one another is motivated by the infinite love of Jesus expressed in the cross. Loving one another is a continuous action which requires on our part a total commitment to love and service.

            The cross provides two things in relation to the mandate to love: it reveals the quality of love that is required, and it provides the motivation to obey the mandate. The world little understands dogmas or theologies, but it understands sympathy and love. A kind act can be more powerful and have a broader scope that the most eloquent of sermons.

            The unmistakable mark that distinguishes the followers of Christ is neither military power nor the accumulation of material goods, nor postures of authority, nor eloquent words, nor numerical growth, nor even miracles; it is only the consistent practice of love for others. Tertullian remarked that even the pagans in referring to the followers of Christ said, “See how they love each other.”

 

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for your infinite love for humanity. Pardon our inability to love others. Teach us to love in the manner which you did, without hypocrisy or second thoughts. Amen.

AMAR VERDADERAMENTE.

JUAN 13:34-35

Queridos, si Dios nos amó de esta manera, también nosotros debemos amarnos unos a otros.

1 Jn. 4:11

            Hay dos maneras en que es posible unir las cosas: una es por medio de la congelación; la otra por medio de la fusión, por el calor. Lo que precisamos los cristianos es estar unidos por el amor fraternal.

            El mandamiento de Jesús de amarse los unos a los otros es motivado por el infinito amor de Jesús expresado en la cruz. Amarse unos a otros es una acción continuada que requiere de nuestra parte una entrega total de amor y servicio.

            La cruz provee dos cosas en relación con el mandato de amar: revela la calidad de amor que se exige y provee la motivación para obedecer el mandato.

            El mundo poco entiende de dogmas o de teologías, pero entiende de simpatía y amor. Una acción bondadosa puede ser más potente y tener mayor alcance que el más elocuente de los sermones.

            La marca inconfundible que distingue a los seguidores de Cristo no es el poder militar, ni la acumulación de bienes materiales, ni posturas de autoridad, ni elocuentes palabras, ni el crecimiento numérico, ni aun los milagros; sino la práctica consecuente del amor unos por otros. Tertuliano comentaba que aún los paganos al referirse a los seguidores de Jesús decíían: “Mirad como se aman”.

 

Oración: Señor Jesús, gracias por tu infinito amor por la humanidad. Perdona nuestra incapacidad para amar a los demás. Enséñanos a amar de la manera que Tu lo hiciste; sin hipocresías ni segundas intenciones. Amén.
