HOW CAN I BECOME A GOOD SHEPHERD?

JOHN 10:11-18

I am the good shepherd.  The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

John. 10:11(CEB)

            The shepherd in Palestine was totally responsible for the sheep.  The authentic shepherd never hesitated to risk his life and to give his life to save his sheep.  The impromptu shepherd looked at his work not as a vocation, but as a way to earn money and to gain as much as possible.  He did not feel any appreciation for the heavy responsibility of his task.  He was no more than a salaried employee.  Zechariah notes that a characteristic of the false shepherd is not being willing  to gather in the dispersed sheep. (Zech. 11:16-17)

            What Jesus wanted to say was that the one who works only for what he can get out of it thinks about nothing but the money; but the one who works out of love thinks about those whom he or she is trying to serve.  Jesus, the Good Shepherd, who loved all of his sheep so much, would one day give his life to save them.  In the parable, the pen is the church of Christ; and the threat is a double danger.  The first danger is that the sheep are always under the enemy’s fire from the outside; the second danger is from within, because often the sheep suffer the tragedy of being pointed in a wrong direction.  Pastors who see their vocation as a career and not as a path of service can be a disaster.  The primary essential need that the Church has at all times is pastoral guidance that follows the example of Jesus Christ.

 

Prayer: Jesus, you are our example of a Shepherd to follow.  Guide and teach each pastor in your principles every day of their lives.  May they always be full of humility and service.  Take away hypocrisy, arrogance, pride, indolence in the face of sin and the misuse of power.  Amen.

¿COMO LLEGAR A SER UN BUEN PASTOR?

Juan10:11-18

Yo soy el buen pastor. El buen pastor da su vida por las ovejas.

Jn. 10:11

            El pastor era en Palestina totalmente responsable de las ovejas. El pastor auténtico no vacilaba nunca en arriesgar y dar su vida para salvar a sus ovejas. El pastor improvisado hacía el trabajo, no por vocación, sino como una manera de ganar dinero, y para sacar lo más posible. No sentía ningún aprecio por la responsabilidad de su tarea. No era más que un asalariado. Zacarías señala como característica del falso pastor que no intenta reunir las ovejas dispersas (Zac. 11:16-17).

            Lo que Jesús quería decir era que el que trabaja sólo por lo que pueda sacar, no piensa más que en el dinero; pero el que trabaja por amor, piensa en aquellos a los que está tratando de servir. Jesús, el Buen Pastor, que amaba tanto a sus ovejas, daría un día su vida para salvarlas. En la parábola, el rebaño es la Iglesia de Cristo; y la amenaza un doble peligro. El primero es que está siempre bajo fuego enemigo desde fuera; el segundo es desde dentro, porque a menudo sufre la tragedia de una mala dirección, del desastre de pastores que ven su vocación como una carrera y no como un camino de servicio. La primera necesidad esencial que tiene la Iglesia en todos los tiempos es una dirección pastoral que siga el ejemplo de Jesucristo.

 

Oración: Jesús tú eres nuestro ejemplo de Pastor a seguir. Guía y enseña a cada Pastor o Pastora cada día de sus vidas en tus principios. Que siempre estén presente la humildad y el servicio. Quita la hipocresía, arrogancia, orgullo, la indolencia frente al pecado y el mal uso del poder. Amén.
