IN THE ONGOING STRUGGLE WITH SIN

Romans 7:14-21

A person’s selfish desires are set against the Spirit, and the Spirit is set against one’s selfish desires. They are opposed to each other, so you shouldn’t do whatever you want to do.

Galatians 5:17 (CEB)

            There is a famous statue in the Chicago Museum that represents a sports fight. To the extent that you draw close to the statue, you see the contrasting faces of the opponents, their furious looks, the painful grimaces; signs of a struggle to the death.  On the pedestal is written a quote from Victor Hugo: “Within myself I feel two men who struggle.” In the artwork, one kneeling man is trying to get up; the other is gathering all of his force to keep him down.  One wants to rise, to incorporate himself toward life.  The other wants to force him to stay kneeling on the floor.

            We all have our own internal struggle; that we fight with ourselves. It is the struggle between flesh and spirit.  The apostle Paul confesses to recognize that he tries to follow the best path, but he continues on the worse path.  All believers in Jesus Christ should feel the need to pray and to confess their sins. 

            The Christian life is like a sports fight and requires consecration and sacrifice on our part.  To advance and believe in Christ one must be victorious not over the humans outside of us, but over the adversary we carry within.

 

Prayer: Lord, do not allow your sons and daughters to rejoice in sin.  Oh God, allow us to be a Church worthy of you for your glory and honor.  Amen.

EN LUCHA PERMANENTE CONTRA EL PECADO.

Romanos 7:14-21

Porque el deseo de la carne es contra el Espíritu y el del Espíritu es contra la carne; y estas se oponen entre sí para que no hagáis lo que quisiereis.

            Hay una famosa estatua en el museo de Chicago que representa una lucha deportiva. En la medida que usted se acerca a la misma ve los rostros contraídos de los contrincantes, sus furibundas miradas, las muecas dolorosas; señales de una lucha a muerte. En el pedestal está escrita una frase de Víctor Hugo: “Yo siento dentro de mí, dos hombres que luchan” En la obra un hombre de rodillas hace esfuerzo por levantarse; el otro haciendo acopio de todas sus fuerzas trata de impedírselo. Uno desea erguirse, incorporarse ante la vida. El otro se esfuerza por mantenerlo en el suelo de rodillas.

            Todos tenemos nuestra propia lucha interior; esa que liberamos con nosotros mismos. La lucha entre la naturaleza carnal y la espiritual. El apóstol Pablo confiesa reconocer cual es el mejor camino y lo aprueba, pero sigue el camino peor. Todo creyente en Jesucristo debe sentir la necesitad de orar y confesar sus pecados.

            La vida cristiana es como una lucha deportiva y requiere consagración y sacrificio de nuestra parte. Para avanzar y crecer en Cristo hay que vencer no al hombre de afuera, sino al adversario que llevamos dentro.

 

Oración: Señor, no permitas nunca que tus hijos e hijas se regocijen en el pecado. Oh Dios, permítenos ser una iglesia digna de Ti para la gloria y la honra tuya. Amén.
