Twenty Fresh loaves and Grain
2 Kings 4: 42-44
Blessed
is he that looks upon others with goodness
and shares his bread with the poor. Proverbs 22: 9
The story of the proliferation
of the loaves accomplished by the prophet Elijah underscores the will of God to
feed the group accompanying the prophet despite the scant provision of bread in
their stores. Elijah isn’t a magician, he’s a “man of God” who always acts in
obedience to the Lord. He’s a faithful believer and a prophet. That’s why he insists,
“Give it to them, because the Lord says, ‘they will eat, and there will be
bread to spare.’” when his servant shows doubt saying, “How am I going to feed
a hundred me with just this one loaf ?” And so it went, “He served it to them,
they ate, and yet more remained, according to the word of the Lord.
The prophet’s miracle
brings Yahweh’s power, which makes the land fertile and gives life to his
people, into high relief. Through the prophet’s faith God’s power and fidelity
are also manifested in a tentative situation in which human resources are few
and man’s capacities prove insufficient.
If today you share your
bread with the hungry you will be collaborating with God so that he may
continue to work miracles in the world.
Prayer: Bread of life, you
who sustain us, giving us bread from heaven, awaken in us the desire to share
our material bread with others, so that no one wants. Amen.

Proverbios 22:9
El relato de la
multiplicación de los panes realizada por el profeta Eliseo subraya la voluntad
de Dios de dar de comer a aquel grupo que está con el profeta, a pesar de la
poca provisión de panes con que cuentan. Eliseo no es un mago, es un “hombre de
Dios”, que actúa siempre en obediencia al Señor. Es un creyente fiel y un
profeta. Por eso, ante la duda de su criado (“¿cómo voy a dar de comer con esto
a cien hombres?”), insiste: “Dáselo, porque el Señor dice: ‘comerán y
sobrará’”. Y así sucede: “Él se lo sirvió, comieron y sobró, según la palabra
del Señor”.
El milagro del profeta pone
de manifiesto el poder de Yahvé, el único que hace fértil la tierra y da la
vida a su pueblo. A través de la fe del profeta se hace presente también el
poder y la fidelidad de Dios en una situación límite, en donde los medios
humanos son escasos y las capacidades del hombre resultan insuficientes.
Si
compartes hoy tu pan con el hambriento, estarás colaborando con Dios para que
él siga obrando maravillas en el mundo.
Oración: Pan de Vida, tu que nos
sostienes dándonos el pan del cielo, despierta en nosotros el deseo de
compartir con los demás el pan material, para que nadie sienta hambre. Amén.
