THE NEED FOR A VISION

ACTS 18:1-21

“One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision: ‘Do not be afraid; keep on speaking, do not be silent.’”

Acts 18:9

Someone once said that a human being is a vision encased in flesh and bones. Having visions is an indispensable condition in order for a person to live.  On many occasions we use this term ‘vision’ in different ways or to say different things.

The Apostle Paul had a vision in Corinth.  And although the word vision is used here in the sense of an apparition or revelation, we insist on using it in another way.  Paul’s vision enabled him to open himself to the panorama of need that the Corinthians had for the Lord. If we read the Bible we are going to find that at every moment, God places this hope before human beings.

God calls us today.  There are many arms extending toward heaven and requiring help. There will be those who will not believe and who will reject Christ’s message, but there will always be those for whom it is worthwhile to keep on speaking without being silent about the truths of the Gospel.

Prayer: We pray, God, for a Church that proclaims the message of the Gospel under all circumstances. Amen.

LA NECESIDAD DE UNA VISIÓN

HECHOS 18:1-21

No temas, sino habla, y no calles”

Hechos 18:9

LET US OPEN OUR HEARTS
ACTS 19:1-6

“When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.”

Acts 19:6

There is a famous painting titled “The Light of the World” that shows Christ in a garden at midnight knocking on a gate with one hand, while holding a lamp in the other.  The first time that the painting was exhibited, an art critic said to the painter:  “Maestro, your painting is unfinished.  The gate doesn’t have a lock.”  The painter replied: “That is the gate to the human heart, which can only be opened from within.”

When the Apostle Paul returned to Ephesus, he encountered a group of very poorly instructed disciples at the church and when he asked them if they had received the Holy Spirit after their conversion, visibly astounded they replied: “We haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit”. He immediately guided them to a better understanding.  He baptized them in the name of the Lord and the Spirit of God came upon them.

Today, as then, we encounter people who call themselves Christians, but who have not felt the life-giving warmth of Christ in their lives. So they remain in darkness, because the gates to their hearts remain closed, waiting perhaps to hear the firm knock of the Teacher, who, once inside, will be able to guide them through the luminous pathways that lead to God.

Prayer: Allow us, Lord, to open our hearts in order to be guided by your Holy Spirit. Amen.

ABRAMOS NUESTROS CORAZONES

HECHOS 19:1-6

“Y habiéndole impuesto Pablo las manos,

vino sobre ellos el Espíritu Santo”

Hechos 19:6

WHAT COMES LATER

ROMANS 1:16-17

The righteous will live by faith.”

Romans 1:17

As human beings, we are free to choose our pathway, but we are not free to determine the results of our actions.  A few years ago I met a young woman who tried to commit suicide.  The doctors miraculously saved her life.  A few years later she came to know Christ.  She was aware of her sin: trying to take a life that did not belong to her. I have never doubted her repentance, but no one has been able to erase the marks that her own erroneous decision left upon her body.

In the parable of the prodigal son, the greatest hardship for the son who went to live far away was not hunger or the lack of necessities that he endured, but rather that in his exile he felt distant from himself, distant from others, distant from his father.  The consequential “what comes later” is something that cannot be avoided. One has to face that sad reality, the product of one’s own sin.

Let us think about our present condition.  The decision to depart from God’s pathways has been in our hands. It is also we who experience within our own skins the direct consequence of that separation.  The Father remains at home; the invitation is at hand.

Prayer: Lord, we ask you today for a daily encounter with you. Amen.

LO QUE VIENE DESPUÉS

ROMANOS 1:16-17

Mas el justo por fe vivirá”

Romanos 1:17

CHRIST, THE COMPANION

MATTHEW 28:16-20

“And surely I am with you always…”

Matthew 28:20

We often experience that great feeling of solitude that leads us to desire friendship with others. At the same time we act afraid of others and are not willing to pay the price of having companionship.  We try in vain to comfort ourselves by means of our own self-pity. We are alone and together.  Knowing that others are also alone, that we share a common solitude, we can unite ourselves to one another. It is possible to love; that miracle that leads us to enter into the solitude of another.

It is often in times of extreme solitude that we learn the deepest truth:  that we are never alone.  Even when we feel the most terrible loneliness, there is someone who will never abandon us. He who is the light, which even the darkness of our privacy cannot extinguish; the life, which even our fears cannot destroy. He who is with us in our solitude is also he who is with the other person. In our isolated solitude we share a common companion.  Christ, our travel companion, never leaves us alone.

Prayer: Lord, help us to understand that no one is an island; that another’s pain is my pain. Amen.

CRISTO, EL COMPAÑERO

MATEO 28:16-20

“He aquí yo estoy con ustedes siempre…”

Mateo 28:20

Su Voz delay and VOLUNTEER opportunity

Dear Friends-

Elisa Menocal has encountered some technical difficulties with her laptop that will cause an interruption in service beginning today. In response to an appeal shared with the Cuba Partners Network Monday of this week, Jim Burke is providing a replacement laptop for Elisa. Jim and Elisa are working together with hopes of returning to production in the next week to ten days.

Much thanks to Jim for responding to this appeal. And much thanks to Elisa for her devotion to this calling.

There remains one very important volunteer opportunity for anyone who would like to volunteer their time and gifts to work with Elisa in translating and posting daily Su Voz devotions to the Cuba Partners Su Voz blog at http://cubapartnersnetworksuvoz.blogspot.com/

The process is relatively simple. I procure the quarterly Su Voz production from IPRC in soft form. Elisa translates and posts the translation and the original Spanish version to the blog whose link is above.

Elisa began this ministry several years ago when she spent a year in residence at SET. She has continued this ministry since her return to the US and currently resides in Boston. While a number of people gain access to daily Su Voz devotions by going to the blog, I estimate that several hundred in the US receive the devotion every day via email. This chain reaction comes primarily from Cuba partnership local leaders who daily access the Cuba Partners Su Voz blog, copy the devotion, and forward to their particular email distribution group.

In Austin, we have chosen to let folks access Su Voz when they wish by going to the blog. Should you wish to receive daily emails of Su Voz devotions, please contact Barbara D'Andrea at athnbub@aol.com . I understand that she regularly forwards via email Su Voz to those who prefer to receive email every day. (Most people, like me, do not like to receive daily email. But then I sometimes forget about Su Voz, until is time for quarterly updates!)

Your choice as to when and how you might wish to access Su Voz. I am amazed at how often the devotions seem as if they were written specifically for me. And, they help keep me in touch with the Cuban church.

And should any of you choose to help Elisa Menocal with translation and posting, please contact Elisa at  elisa.menocal@gmail.com or by phone at 610-256-6552. As a volunteer, I am sure she would welcome a partner.

Blessings,

Jack

Wedneday, August 27 RESPONSIBLE HOPE LUKE 4:18-21

Wedneday,  August 27
RESPONSIBLE HOPE
LUKE 4:18-21
The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
 because he has anointed me
To preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom
For the prisoners, and recovery of sight for the blind,
 to release the oppressed …”
Luke 4: 18

Oh God, we live in confusing times.
We wonder how all the hungry can be fed, how the air
Can be kept pure, how peace can be achieved.
We want to be faithful to you,
We want to be instruments of your peace.
But what we do is so small, so little
In the face of such crushing problems.
Like a raindrop in the sea,
Our best fantasies of what we could do barely cause the
Surface to ripple for a fraction of a second,
in the face of the giant waves
That threaten to engulf us.
We feel defenseless and at times without hope.

Prayer: Free us, God, from hopelessness.  Grant us the passion to take the necessary risks and the confidence that comes from knowing that what matters is to be faithfully responsible to your call.  Then, even if we cannot save the world, we can conserve our integrity. Amen.

ESPERANZA RESPONSABLE
LUCAS 4:18-21

Tuesday, August 26 WHEN GOD SAYS NO LUKE 22:39-44

Tuesday,  August 26
WHEN GOD SAYS NO
LUKE 22:39-44
“Yet not my will, but yours be done.”
Luke 22:42

A girl told her friend that at the same time that she asked her parents for a box of candies, she prayed to God so that she would get what she wanted. In the end the girl received her response and it was a “no”. Her friend said to her: “See that, God didn’t answer your prayer.”  “Yes, he did,” replied the girl.  “He told me no.”

There is a hymn with the following request:   “Teach me the patience of prayer without a response”…at least “without a response” according to my patience.  Isaiah 55 quotes God in this way: “Because my thoughts are not your thoughts, and your pathways are not my pathways.” A person proposes, but God decides. We pray, we act, we love; but we also have to surrender our ideas, desires, attitudes, attachments, and allow God to do his work.

Prayer: Oh God, forgive me for the times that my mind and heart were not large enough to understand everything that you are doing and that everything is in your hands and under control. Help me to accept your will and to believe in you even when the response is not the one I’d hoped to receive. Amen.

CUANDO DIOS DICE NO
LUCAS 22:39-44

Monday, August 25 GOD AND EVIL ROMANS 7:21-25

Monday,  August 25
GOD AND EVIL
ROMANS 7:21-25
“So I find this law at work: when I want to do good, evil is right there with me.”
Romans 7:21

Many of us have learned that if we have true faith in God, it means that nothing really bad can happen to us.  We have experienced in our own lives the biblical affirmation that “in all things God works for the good of those who love him”. However, be it through a personal tragedy, the sufferings or the untimely deaths of our loved ones, or through the knowledge of unspeakable atrocities; we are at times bombarded by a great feeling of guilt for our “lack of faith”.

The Christian faith does not say that evil does not occur.  The belief that God is love, and that love is the fundamental power in the universe, does not mean that hate will not win many of the battles. Believing that God’s loving providence guides the process of the world does not mean that events with destructive consequences will not occur. Believing in the resurrection implies first believing in the crucifixion of the person who proclaimed God’s will, as a true injustice.  But this injustice is not the entire story. Even when such an evil occurs, such that it would have been better if it had not occurred, there exists a power working on our behalf that can bring good even out of evil.

Prayer: Father, do not allow us to work together with evil, but help us to act with your holy power. Amen.

DIOS Y EL MAL
ROMANOS 7:21-25

Sunday, August 24 LET US THINK OF OTHERS JOHN 3:1-15

Sunday,  August 24
LET US THINK OF OTHERS
JOHN 3:1-15
“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.  For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
Luke 6:38
Throughout the twentieth century it was thought that better living conditions would come to those who were happiest and most fraternal. In today’s world we need to admit that material welfare is not enough.

The Bible teaches us that happiness does not consist in chasing after material riches, but rather in living in a good relationship with God and with our neighbors. Those relationships give true meaning to our lives. They are characterized not by what we possess but by what we share and give.

Through being “born again” we enter into a new dimension: that of God’s love.  We have access to it thanks to the most extraordinary gift:  God’s own Son and that Son’s gift of his own life.  That gift has a peculiarity:  it is universal, and yet, it concerns each individual in a very personal manner.  By accepting his wealth and his tenderness, each person can devote himself to God with gratitude.

A true and happy relationship is thereby established with God, who is known not as the One who demands, but as the One who gives and to whom one gives oneself.  In turn, our relationships to others are enriched when they develop along the same principle. Let us seek to discover and satisfy the needs of others without expecting anything in return.

Prayer: Father, give us the wisdom to first do what we need to do first. Amen.

PENSEMOS EN LOS DEMÁS
JUAN  3:1-15

Saturday, August 23 Anniversary of the World Council of Churches GOD IS NEAR PSALM 102

Saturday,  August 23
Anniversary of the World Council of Churches
GOD IS NEAR
PSALM  102
The Lord looked down from his sanctuary on high, from heaven he viewed the earth, to hear the groans of the prisoners and release those condemned to death…”
Psalm 102:19-20
Reading this passage is startling.  There, one sees the human being pouring out his soul before God, in the midst of tremendous suffering and beseeching His response.  It is the human being’s affliction to visualize the evil ways of the people, those that without a doubt personally affect him.  The horizon appears in complete darkness and apparently closed shut, without a glimmer of light promising a new dawn.  Nevertheless, the plea results in a vision of what God has promised and of what He is doing.

The psalmist recalls that among the eternal God’s memorable works lays the future restoration of Zion.  That is when God’s glory will dazzle, and will be seen in the towns, and will be praised in song.  In our days there are also people and places that live in the dark night of the soul and who, like the psalmist, say:   “Answer me quickly, Lord”. And the Lord responds; He always responds.  We are not alone amid our difficulties, our personal or communal struggles. God is not a distant God.  He views the earth, He hears our laments and he frees those who are suffering and who feel hopeless.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, because you always hear us.  Amen.

Aniversario del Consejo Mundial de Iglesias
DIOS ESTÁ CERCA
SALMO  102

Friday, August 22 THE GATE AND HIS MESSAGE JOHN 10:1-10

Friday,  August 22
THE GATE AND HIS MESSAGE
JOHN  10:1-10
“I am the gate for the sheep.
John 10:7
The Lord himself told the incredulous Pharisees:   “I am the gate.”  By that He meant that He is the entrance-way that allows us to pass through the impenetrable wall of malice that separates us from God.  He is the Priest, the Sacrifice and the Altar.  He, through his redemptive work on the cross, made possible the reconciliation between God and humanity.  Through him alone we are made new creatures.

He is the gate, the gate of salvation entirely open, as He invites us: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened” and promises: “He who comes to me will not be rejected”.

There exists no force that can close it, be it that of a powerful priest or that of a political dictator; no one.  If you break your chains free of evil and place yourself in his hands, you can live confident in the truth expressed by the verses of this hymn:

The hand of God acts in our world
With grace and with power;
The Church should see; the great act
Of the powerful hand of God.

The gate is open. Aren’t you tired of the burden, of the guilt, of the discouragement, of the useless struggle?

Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, grant that your gate of salvation always be open for us. Thank you. Amen.

LA PUERTA Y SU MENSAJE
JUAN  10:1-10
“Yo soy la puerta de las ovejas
Juan 10:7
actuando con gracia y con poder;

Gracias. Amén.

Thursday, August 21 FOR HE SO LOVED JOHN 3:16-21

Thursday,  August 21

FOR HE SO LOVED
JOHN 3:16-21
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son…”
John 3:16

God repudiates sin. He has always condemned it.  With sin there is no understanding, no accord; and yet, He loves the sinner. His love for us surpasses all understanding and it is so vast that it cannot be measured.  We are his creatures, created for eternal life, but stripped of this privilege through sin.

Because of his love for you and for me, and for all of his creatures, he gave up his own Son as a sacrifice in order to change the destiny of death that awaited us into the destiny of eternal life that we had lost.

His love brings forgiveness and pardon for the offenses committed against Him and covers over the ruins that sin has caused within us.

With his power God builds a new life, guided and sustained by his presence in us. God is with you. His love will not forsake you.

Prayer: Merciful father, I give you thanks for Jesus Christ and for your immense love.  Pardon my sins and cleanse me of my wrongdoing so that I may honor you. Amen.

DE TAL MANERA AMÓ
JUAN 3:16-21

Wednesday, August 20 KNEELING TO PRAY AT YOUR BEACH ACTS 21:1-6

Wednesday,  August 20
KNEELING TO PRAY AT YOUR BEACH
ACTS 21:1-6
“But when our time was up, we left and continued on our way.  All the disciples and their wives and children accompanied us out of the city and there at the beach we knelt to pray.”
Acts 21:5
There are moments at which life appears to be a sea filled with present and future unknowns. We stand upon its shores. What are we to do?  Paul and his brothers in the faith of Jesus were willing to toss themselves into the sea sustained by their trust in God, who is always the God of the future, as they knelt before Him.

The great physicist Newton said that he was like one who knelt and gathered the small pebbles and seashells on the beach while in front of him, the sea of the great mysteries of the Universe extended in its immeasurable vastness.  Such is our human existence. We face an immensity of mysteries… the unknown of the creation, of the future, of life and of death.  There are some who want to make us believe that they know everything. They fool themselves and attempt to fool us.  The more we learn about everything around us, the more our ignorance increases, just as the sea expands before us.

Each moment of our lives has extraordinary worth. Every decision made leaves behind an infinite number of decisions that we do not make and that would have made our lives different.  And who can say that he or she has always made the best decision?  The human being faces an unfathomable sea of possibilities.  Taking life seriously, he is always humbly on his knees on account of his possible errors.

Prayer: God, guide us and make us worthy of the pathway that you want us to take. Amen.

DE RODILLAS EN TU PLAYA
HECHOS 21:1-6
con sus mujeres e hijos, hasta fuera de la ciudad;
