 Authority vs. Power 

  Matthew 21: 23-32

                                                    You will know them by their fruits.                       Matthew 7: 16

     A few days ago a friend told me something that made me think. He said, “Don’t believe in what the politicians say (and here I’d add, some of the religious types as well), rather notice what they do.” And this is precisely what Jesus Christ’s words point to.

     A popular saying says, “Do what I say, not what I do.” But Jesus inverts this logic; for him the person that does what is correct isn’t the one who says what is correct, rather the one who ends by obeying (doing) God’s envoy. He (Jesus) criticizes the religious hypocrites and affirms that, “The tax collectors and prostitutes are going first in the way to the kingdom of God.”  He dynamites the society’s scale of values with this sentence, as much in his time as in ours.

     It’s time to clean the spectacles through which we see life and God, to throw off old prejudices, and to hold authority responsible for their acts and results, and not with the positions they can simply flaunt.

     Authority is something supported by acts, life, not postulations or positions.

Prayer:  Lord, increase our faith to believe in your Son who you sent so that we have abundant life. Amen.

Mateo 21:23-32

“A ustedes los conocerán por sus frutos”        Mateo 7:16

Un amigo me dijo hace unos días una frase que me ha hecho pensar, me dijo: “no creas en lo que dicen los políticos (yo le añadiría también algunos religiosos), sino fíjate en lo que hacen”, y a eso es precisamente a lo que apuntan estas palabras de Jesucristo.

Dice un refrán popular: “haz lo que yo digo, y no lo que yo hago”. Pero Jesús invierte esta lógica, para él la persona que hace lo correcto no es la que dice lo correcto, sino la que termina por obedecer (hacer) al enviado de Dios. Critica a los religiosos hipócritas y afirma que: “los publicanos y las prostitutas van delante en el camino al reino de los cielos”. Con esta frase dinamita la escala de valores de la sociedad de su época… y también de la nuestra.

Es tiempo de limpiar los lentes a través de los cuales vemos la vida y a Dios, de mudar viejos prejuicios, y de hacer corresponder la autoridad con los hechos y los resultados, y no con las posiciones que se puedan ostentar. 

La autoridad es algo que respaldan los hechos, la vida, no los dichos ni los cargos.

Oración: Señor, auméntanos la fe para creer en tu Hijo, a quien enviaste para que tuviéramos una vida abundante. Amén
